Title: quick and easy leather handle wrap
Post by: bubby on May 02, 2013, 05:17:18 pm
this is an easy way to get a tight fit handle wrap without measuring anything, take some masking tape sticky side out and wrap it where the leather will go(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4218_zps30304aba.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4218_zps30304aba.jpg.html)(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4219_zpsf6603d99.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4219_zpsf6603d99.jpg.html)(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4220_zpsfe5dcca7.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4220_zpsfe5dcca7.jpg.html)

now take a straight edge and cut the tape, be carefull to not get to deep, just cut the tape(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4221_zpsd67bf904.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4221_zpsd67bf904.jpg.html)
now put the sticky side on the side of the leather that isn't going to show(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4222_zpsa08988ed.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4222_zpsa08988ed.jpg.html)
and cut it out(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4223_zpsa144bf1b.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4223_zpsa144bf1b.jpg.html)
I use a hole punch to make the stitching holes but I've used a hole punch and an ice pick use what you have(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4225_zps739c1d32.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4225_zps739c1d32.jpg.html)

now you can stitch it up loosely cause you have to slide it over the bow, I like to use two needles and bring both sides down at the same time(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4226_zpsea28d7c4.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4226_zpsea28d7c4.jpg.html)
(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4227_zps81874d6c.jpg) (http://s6(http://now all you have to do is tighten up the stitching and tie it of,http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4230_zps469066f5.jpg)(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4228_zpsfcebb5b4.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4228_zpsfcebb5b4.jpg.html)(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/101_4229_zpsa0689293.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/101_4229_zpsa0689293.jpg.html)
now all you have to do is tighten the stitches up and tie it off, hope this helps some of you guys out, Bub

Thanks! Great idea. Do you ever use any glue or anything under the leather?  All the grips I've done have seemed too loose.

Post by: bubby on May 03, 2013, 06:10:18 am
Adam if done this way they are pretty tight  and form fitting, when you cut the leather out wrap it around the handle and if there isn't a little gap cut a thin strip of one side, and remember that leather will stretch more one way than the other so find out which way that is and orient the leather so the stretchier way goes up and down and not around

Brilliant Bub! I've always had trouble with grips, and waste a lot of leather before I get a good fitting one. You just solved my problem! Thanks

I used this today on a deep dished recurve handle that I had once thought would be impossible to put a handle on, but this method worked perfectly and I got an incredibly snug, perfect fit! Thanks again for this tip Bub! It's brilliant.

Is sharkskin stretchy when wet?  This technique would really come in very handy when you have a nonstretchy material and need to get it right the first time!

Yes Sir,

I've used this method twice now, on bulbous handled bows.
And even though it looks weird when you lay it out flat, it has worked like a champ.

Thanks Again Bubby!

What do you use for the stitching thread?
Title: Re: quick and easy leather handle wrap
Post by: JW_Halverson on September 10, 2013, 11:30:06 pm
In his photos he is using artificial sinew, probably the 70# stuff.  I use that and Dacron B50 bow string material, depending on what is closest to hand.

guys i used this the other day,, and it does work wrll..but..and its a small one..take into consideration the thickness of your handle material..really thick leather will come up a bit short.

the cord running through the laces filled the gap nicely,, lucked out on the color..looks awesome i think.

Shame to cover that pretty wood handle.    ;)

Extend the "top" & "bottom" a bit and then fold that bit over and glue it to itself . . . gives ya nice finished edge at top and bottom of your leather-wrapped handle.

I’ve sewn my handles (similar outlook as in the beginning of this chain) wet. I cut the leather few mm short and when sewn moist the leather stretches and the edges meet nicely. After drying overnight the fit is really tight round the handle. No glues needed. In most cases I’ve added a layer or two TruOil or bees wax against moisture.

Do you realize just how many attempts I've messed up over the years trying to cut the wrap exactly right?  Right there not a foot away on my work bench hanging on a nail was the answer....a roll of masking tape.  Thanks for sharing your ingenious idea!

Thanks for the tips bubby. I usually leave my handle naked. Partially because I like them that way, but mostly because I never figured out a good way to do them. I've got one now I'd like to give this a try on
