I've seen a KITH, PITH, what about a BITH? Box in the hat? We have knappers from all over the country. Materials some of us have never knapped. My question is would anyone be open to a large flat rate box of rock swap? Treated or not. Just a question. Tower
-
I think most knapperes would be curious about other materials, especially local stone. I wonder how many of us are able to collect materials rather than purchase them? For instance, I can collect Crowley's Ridge (Lafayette Gravel) any day I want (barring flood times) and I don't know of it being for sale anywhere. Might be a great trade for someone. That said, I'd risk a swap for lord knows what just to see what I get. What about heat treating? I think as long as we knew what to do as instructed by the trader, anyone should be able to crank up a Turkey roaster and some folks like raw rock. It would be a gamble, and not applicable to everyone, but some folks with lots of local rock might be interested. I would be for medium box rather than large though.
-
I think that is a great idea, I want to try Flintridge, Hornstone, Coral, Novaculite and some more Odsidian. I guess Burlington is like Keokuk ? The guys receiving from Texas knappers would stand a chance of getting a good variety of stuff.
Tower, how about I bring some of the stuff I have been cooking by and see if you can make me one of those killer Cahokias.
-
With respect... I think y'all are over analyzing it. I'd swap my best for anything, but I live 15min from more material than I could Knap in 5 lifetimes. I'd like the challenge of a hard material.
-
I'm interested. Couple thoughts... I agree with medium flat instead of a large. Will we be sending spalls or nodules? Will there be any restrictions on who can join? Some people simply don't understand what good rock is. Not sure how to solve these issues, and I dont mean to over complicate the concept, but I'd like to discuss it a little first.
-
I'd be in. I can get bull gravel.
-
Sounds interesting, hmm.
-
Sounds great!
Medium or small flat rate box sounds good to me.
If you don't have good rock, I would think that thick glass would be acceptable? I'd be happy with anything cool-looking: colored glass, gravel, heated, unheated, flakes, chunks, you name it! ;D
-
A medium flat rate sounds great .

I agree with this......Guess I got a little excited earlier :-[
-
I'm in. Would be happy to send out a box of the Johns valley rock. Its tough, but Cowboy made some pretty points with it. And Ive made just some points :-[

I would be happy to send a box of the chert and agate I collect here in Lyon County Nevada. Raw or heat treated spalled or not.
It's what I have been learning on. The nodules are small and a 3 inch spall is a big one for me. However some one with more experience at spalling might want to spall it them self.
So if anyone wants to try what I can get I would be happy to try to any other material out there.

I'm in for a Med. flat rate and I can pack you some challenging rock Don, if I get you. My problem is I'm in Spain still but my boss said hell or high water I'm not staying past November 10.
-
medium or large count me in!
-
I think we can accommodate everyone.
-
When does it start?
Knapper
-
I'll work up the details tomorrow.
-
Cool, I'm flying home on the 8th :).

I want to apologize to everyone on PA. The last month I havent been at my best. Unexpected circumstances arose that occupied much of my time PA has the greatest group of people in this world. I was PM'ed about this post. I let it fall through the cracks. I feel like I've let y'all down. Again I apologize. If anyone is still interisted please let me know.
-
Don, I'm still in. I know about the cracks, I'm leaving again, soon.
-
I think we all know how those unexpected circumstances seem to happen at times. I hope things are better. I am also still in.
Majuba Tom
-
Wait...there's going to be a rock exchange? :o
I've slept since the last post.
-
Tower I hae been knapping nothing but hard rock lately. I collected about 1000lbs of Argillite, its like basalt but a little different. Its metamorphosed or indurated shale. The Lenape and the Maori used it a lot. I also have some touh NY rock silicified shale or esopus, some normanskill, a few pieces of Onondaga and I have a lot of local Quartzite. If you or any one are interested let me know...I also have hornstone, novaculite, Flintridge, obsidian, few pieces coral, coastal plains, a few more I cant remember off hand.
ps u can see what I been doing with some of it on PaleoPlanet...I have the banner pic on oldtool thread...a killer quartzite bifurcate..scroll down and see the Dalton, and argillite Susqhuehanna point..also a banner pic...

I would jump in with the local stuff, but I don't think anybody would be too happy with the choice of local rhyolite i have. This stuff will make you cry.
-
My local materials jaspers and agates supply is down, but I have a palate of southern rock mostly Texas stuff. Am not interested in glass though. Would like to be added to this list! Joe

Still in Don

I've been home since the 8th. :) But, going to Israel, soon.
-
what the heck do you do again?
-
Ok , if it's ok with everyone I'll post everyone interisted in participating on Thursday evening. I will personally PM everyone from the older posts tomorrow. Hopefully we can get this thing shipped early next week. Let it be known that what we receive is what our brothers on PA have to break. It may not be the best, or material some of us are accustom to. We do however expect to see a point made from it. At some time in our life. :). Tower
-
I am supposed to be getting a box of tallahata chert today or tomorrow if anyone is interested. I am a terrible knapper to start with and I heard that particular rock is on the harder side to knap.
-

Yes, and see some arrowheads too. :P
-
I could send some of that coral stuff. It's not heat treated, but really pretty. I'm in... :)
-
Tower you just get it going and ill send a box of TX to whoever draws my name :).
-

Coral in Texas?
-
Well Don, I've been back and forth on this one. I reckon I can scrummage up a box of chert. Might even be able to send some heat treated. Count me in.
-
Ok, these are the names I have so far. In for a medium flat rate box. If someone is on this list by mistake please let me know.

Yes! I can't wait. I have a nice box ready to go and Im sure someone will appreciate the mix of local NY rock I have in it..also will include a point made from one of the stone. I look forward to the exchange and will be happy with whatever I get..I wouldn't mind some tallahatta and ryholite to compare to the stone I have though... have a good day and thanks Don! This is a great idea..oh also let me know for whomever gets paired up with me I can throw in a wooden billet/bopper..its a very Abo tool that was used by the ancients as well as some modern Knappers, its amazing the effect wood has on the hard rocks..
Russ
-
Knapper , sorry , I've put you in.
-
This is dum question?? I have some obsidian slabs that were given to me by one of my old Washington buddies. I used them when trying to teach the basics of knapping to kids the Wyoming G & F get together each year. If no one would be offended I could add a hand full of them along with the rest of the box! Let me know or I will just send big ole rocks. Joe
-
Don, I will let you know tomorrow after the mail is delivered if I am still in or not. Tallahatta hasn't shown yet.
-
Ok JEB. Wolf watcher slabs are ok
-
I also have a box already to go with a mix of stone from Lyon county Nevada.

Don, I am out. The rock didn't show today. I sent the funds for the rock over a month ago. Looks like I got clipped. Oh well. Hope I didn't goof things up. Jon
-
I'll be back in town on the 12 so rocks will fly around about that time ;).

A box of rocks are waiting in the seat of my truck. Just need to swing by the PO.
-
woo hoo....thanks Knapper. I'm looking forward to it like a kid at Christmas.
Terry, I'll get yours in the mail by Friday.
-
Made it into town and put the box in the mail. Thanks for putting this exchange together. Joe
-
I dropped the box off at the post office on the way to work so its on the way. :)
-
I've got a pile made, just have to box them up.
-
Box sent. :)
-
Send them to me Eddie...lol I guess I got to wit for Paul to get back? I cant find his address.

I got a box headed North to Wolf watcher today. actually yesterday, it's past midnight already. I forgot to take a pic before I mailed them but bull gravel doesn't take good pics anyway. This gravel might have come from up that way a few thousand years ago. I'm sending it back! Hope you like it Wolf watcher, It's by far my best option for knappable material here in SE Texas that I know of. Some of it is slick as all gitout and some of it is just outright bopper killing knapper cripplers
Thanks Tower for ramrodding this opperation and to everyone who participated. I like it, Terry

This is the 3rd time I have sent it to you.
There must be a problem with something somewhere.
-
Thanks Tower! I don't know what the heck is going on either. Either something with my hard drive or I have a virus. Keeps freezing up and not showing stuff that I send or have purchased from other sites... Too much crap going on, wrecked my truck getting to work tonight in a blizzard, tore exhaust system right off...oh well I will get it out to Cowboy as soon as I make it home!

So, I get this box of rocks from Majuba Tom. Cool, I says... until I opened the box. Wow! Check out how neatly packaged everything is!! ;D Can't wait to get started on making points from this stuff!

I might have gotten carried away with packing. >:D
So thats the stuff I have been learning on It will be interesting to see how it works for you.
-
I will post all results. ;D
-
Very Nice rocks...I thought it was Omaha steaks for a minute..lol One thing I learned is sometimes u can't get too carried away with packaging as sharp edges and flakes will cut through the box... Can't wait to see some points!
Russ
-
That is an interesting variety there! Look forward to seeing them Patrick.
-
Made it to town today and found a box of rocks from Terry (1442) and all I could think about was hunting points!! These rocks are the perfect size for hunting points. A couple of them reminded me of CraftyJack and his bent knee method of reduction! I can tell you this if Terry learned to knapp using these stones then he jumped in the hard way. Thanks for setting up this trade! Sorry I can't send some pictures! Joe
-
I got home and found a box from Sasquach. It's some kind of rock from Texas, not sure what it is and I'll get a picture up if I can get home before dark. I did hit on a few pieces and it had a pleasant little bell sound as a nice, long flake rolled off. Can't wait to play with some.
-
I got a box today from Wolf (Joe) thank you. Looks like agate and pedernales at a quick glance. I will try and post pics later..I also got Cowboys box in the mail.
Thank you!
Russ
-
Yosemite Ben, finally got your box in the mail today. Sorry it took so long. It's an assortment pack.
-
Here's the rock I got from Sasquatch. Looks like Texas Tab to me. Sure does hit good. Thanks, Man.
-
Sure thing mullet! I guess we all owe Tower a big thanks. Without his leadership on this site none of us would have these cool packages in the mail this Christmas season. Let us know if you can identify the big stones( coral stuff)
-
Will do. I haven't pulled it all out yet, still getting home after dark.
-
Don't worry - I have not forgotten - been a little busy at work and home!
-
Thanks Russ! Man I've been trying to get some of that rock from up there for years. Got yours in the mail too Squatch :). Looking at what you sent Eddie I hope I didn't send u some of the same. It's all cooked or works raw though so happy knappin ;).
-
Cowboy I hope what I sent you works out? I gave u a variety of some tough material at least for most... I'm in a group that knapps stuff like that and harder...BTW I will be going to collect some more of the high grade stuff in the spring..more of what Im sure you would prefer like Onondaga, normanskill esopus, and a few others..I will let you know...

sent my box yesterday. It should arrive at its new home by Saturday.
