Title: What's a common item that weighs 150 grains or 9.75 grams?
Post by: seminolewind on November 06, 2013, 12:31:52 pm
I am trying to make a matched set of points that weigh 150 grains which is right at 9.75 grams. Since I don't have or have access to a scale over here in Afghanistan if I knew a common household item or measurement of something I could make a scale and match them for weight...any ideas?

I just weighed a bunch of pennies. The ones minted in 2008 and after are about 36 or 37 grains each.  4 of those pennies tipped the scale at 148 grains.

I'm sorry I didn't catch where you are, I would think some of the 7.62 rounds would be 150g

Ok cool thanks Jack ! Ill go with this, now just gotta find me some pennies...people might find it a little strange but over here in Afghan land on the American bases all change is handled in small cardboard discs with the denomination printed on them. We call em pogs. There is very little change in circulation but I got an idea where I can find some pennies. So only after 2008 right?

Yeah, after 2008.  The ones minted before 1995 are somewhere around 42 grains each.  The weights are not consistent with the ones I have between 1995 and 2008.

Let me know what you got over there and I'll put it on the grain scale.  Do you have Life Savers or stuff like that?  I think small candy is pretty consistent in weight.

That's crazy about the pogs.  Didn't know that.  :o

So a couple things I have found over here that should be consistent in weight would be thumb tacs (type with plastic back) and/or Gilette Mach 3 detachable razor heads...pretty sad when you can't even find pennies !

Thanks for your help man !

Geeez aren't my tax dollars paying for Match Grade bullets that you are shooting? How much does a .308, or .300 weigh?

Right now the guys were with are shooting the M118 LR which runs around 175g. Our green tip 5.56 rounds are 62 grains a piece, and the current M9 bullet is 115 grains. What I need to get my hands on is the 7.62×51mm NATO M80 FMJ that is just barely under 150g. That will be the round shot out of the SCAR Heavy, SAW, 240, MK44, and sometimes the MK 11 mod 2. Once I get back to the armory ill see if I can snag one.

The average for my thumbtacks is about 7.5 grains.  So 20 thumbtacks = 150 grains.

If you have access to a .308 round, if someone in your unit has an m14 try to get one of those bullets, as they are 148 grains.  Or any of the above suggestions.  I would  think that a fired 5.56 casing would be somewhere around that.

                                            Good luck
