Hello everyone!!  Im John from Pueblo West, Colorado.  Before you get impressed, I live in the dessert part of the state not the cool Mountains. Its the part of the state with NOTHING useful to make bows or points with. I like to hunt with my long bow and homemade gear it just "feels" right to me. I dont get as much as the guys with the big trucks, 4 wheelers and a 7mm Mag. But what I get I earned and will be proud of the rest of my life!!

My wife and I are getting ready to build a house in Walnut Shade(35 miles south of Springfield) which is where I grew up. Nothing down there except for hills, forests, hillbillies, and lots of whitetail deer. Just the way I like it.  ;D

I have been looking for rivercane to make arrows from and found a guy lives down in Shawnee National Forest area that has it growing wild on his place. Hay KEY:

Yes, I build bows.  Such as they are.  Starter making bows when I was in high school.
Most of the first ones were just learing exercises.  A few on my later ones will sling a arrow quite well.
I am now trying to build a bow that not only shoots well but is also pleasent to shoot.  I may have just such a bow in the works now.  It is a long osage flat bow.  I cant remember all it's numbers at this time.  (I am at work)  Some day soon I hope to post a few photos.  I have made lost and lots of kids bows over the years.

Back to work

I know Denison - built your water tower for ya, if your a knapper go down below the Texoma dam, find the big black moss covered rocks - break one open and you'll see some very attractive white with all kinds of light grey banded rock - want to call it chert but don't think it is, almost like a softer novaculite.

Lilburn, GA bout 25 miles north east of Atlanta and new to it all.  Just moved here from central CA in December and I'm a little lost in space right now.  Been digesting about everything I can find on Asiatic Composites for about the last 10 years but have as of yet to make a bow.  Just started getting interested in selfbows, I just like it all and want to be able to make it all.

Any of you GA guys that can teach me stuff give me a holler I'm eager to learn.  For that matter anybody from the neighboring states chime in.  Until two weeks ago I had a cousin in Clarksville but she is back down here now.  The biggest bummer for me is that there are like 4 of you guys right there.  And if anybody here wants wood cut, maybe even some Texas Osage (hint hint), I'm game.  Especially if on a longer trip maybe get some of the local guys to carpool, I can fit 3 other adults in my truck, the tools in the bed, and a trailer behind.

Yes, I just met him. I went over to his house and we shot together a couple of days ago. Matter of fact, I shot his "Hard to Get" bow that is in the Aug. bow of the month contest, and it shoots great, so I am going to buy it from him. It is also alot more beautiful in person than on the screen of a computer, that's for sure.

My wife is making Chris's bow live up to its' name, "Hard to Get". She is telling me that it's too close to Christmas to be buying anything for myself, so I guess she's gonna make me suffer for a couple of months before I get her. Anyway, Chris is an awesome bowyer and person, very willing  to teach me whatever I want to know about primitive archery. He is fine representitve of the art. I've really enjoyed visiting with Chris and with this website. Seems to be a very good, family oriented group of people. If the rest of the primitive archers make me feel as welcome as Chris, then I know this is going to be a very enjoyable experience for me and my kids.

My name is Keith Anderson.  I am in Tumwater, Washington.  The natives here made some cedar bows.  I've been told it is not great to make bows from, so I made my first from osage, and have floor tillered a vine maple which is a local wood.  Maybe a sinew backed cedar bow if I get my deer this year?

This is a cool thread.  Is there an electronic version of the old pins in a map?  It would be great to see where all the posters live and are concentrated at...

I crawled out from under my pile of metal one day and asked a funny looking little brown feller where I was and he said "No Hable".  That sounded funny so I asked another and he said the same thing.  So I asked a funny little white feller and he said Boonville, North Carolina.  It don't matter, I just crawled back under my pile of metal and vowed not to come out until they found my long lost brother, bigfoot.

Yep, we have a lot of wild trout here, including the little native Southern Appalachian Brookies, as well as hatchery supported streams. A few of the lakes here have some good sized lake-run rainbows and browns, too.

Trading's fine, selling is taboo unless you're in the classified section. I wouldn't mind trading some trout flies for some smallmouth flies sometime when I have time to do some tying.

I'm from St.Cloud,Mn.thats about 60 miles north of the twin cities. I.m fairly new to this bowmaking thing. Got a stave from a due i met last year at the local  REN.FEST.
I would like to hear from any others in my state, maybe make a trade or two and maybe make a friend or two also. so any other Minnesotans out there send me an I/M and lets see what we can work out.

I like to fly tie. Currently I owe Mullet some flies( no i havent forgotten ;D) you should have them soon. Are ther any particular patterns you like?

I fish in missouri's trout parks but i want to hit the river the only thing is my mom wont have anything to do on the river. She could sit at the river access and read but that would be boring for her.

I tie flys regularly. great hobby. anyone ever fished northern new mexico? i went on vacation there 2 years ago. I fished a lil place called costilla. best trout fishin i've ever done. caught over 40 in a day(catch and release). the people were kind and hospitable. They even invited us to dinner. i've wanted to experiment with fly fishing in a more primitive fashion. what type of cordage would be best for this application?

     Andrea;
Listen to David W. .  Tell the love of your life, to get a life, and move out to Mt. !  Take him up to where I will be living soon.
Thompson Falls.  Take him to Thompson river, and St. Regis river, and show him the Noxon resivoir, and take him down the Blue slide road, and let him see the Clark fork, and it's views from the Blue Slide rd.  Also the ride on 200 the TF is absolutely georgous, once out of the Reservation.  Once you start traveling along the river, and the views of Mission Mt.s and such should inspire him to think about moving out there.  " Tell him it could be a warm winter in Mt. or a cold summer in Chicago! " Nah, don't tell him that.  Just kidding.  I will be living just off of the Blue slide, as soon as I sell my house here in Fla.  Know any Illinoisians, who want to live in warm, sunny, Fla.  On the treasure coast?  Anyway, have your love of your life visit you out there.  There is just too much to do there, and it is constant sensory overload.  Once he sees the Big Horn Sheep, and deer, and other traffic hazards, and elk, and moose, and bear, that abound in TF, he will be looking for a place to buy.  If he likes to fish, then he will wet his pants, because as you should know, almost everywhere you go, there is a trout stream, river, or lake to fish in! Show him Flat Head lake! TF is only about two hours north of you.  While there stop in at the Little Bear ice cream and sandwhich shop, tell Debbie and Tom, that Wayne says hi. (They are from Fla. also.) You'll love the food, and ice cream.  People come from Idaho, and washington to eat there.  One word of caution......only order half of sandwhich with your soup, unless you are very hungry!  What ever food you order, sandwhich, soup, or combination there of, you will get a fantastic plate of fruit, with order.  One for the sandwhich, and one for the soup. Also, only order half of a banna split.  Unless you are going to share it. In other words, you get large portions, of fantastic food, and desert.  Oh, yeah, don't be in a hurry.  They have a sign telling you that.  If you want fast service go to burger king, or mcDonald
s.  But you will be waited on quickly, they just take their time making the food, and such, but it is well worth the wait.   Wonderful People.  Take your Sweet Patootie there.  Any way, he should be there already.   Oh, are you the one that was asking about making bone arrow heads? If so I have made some more, if you want one, I will send you one.

                                              Take care,

                                                         Stick Bender

My name's Jim,  I live in Hillsborough, N.C.. Been shooting a bow since I was 7.  My granddad used to take me bow & arrow golfing when he played regular golf.  I bowshot a groundhog when I was 9. It took me years to take a deer with an arrow, but the next season, I tagged out before the first gun went off.  I love being in the woods with a stick & string before all the animals are stirred up, there's nothing like it...even if I never get to draw. My best arrow-killed buck scores 114+.

Been knapping for 20 years off & on, but part of that I didn't know what I was doing. Even though my points have killed deer, I have never shot a deer with a point I made.

I was hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light on 4-21-07 and T-boned my side of the car which almost killed me.  I had a traumatic brain injury, several broken bones, & the vision in my left eye is still off.  My left shoulder was injured badly enough that I can't draw any of my bows and I am just getting my knapping skills back (I wasn't a great knapper to start with).  But I am lucky to still be here and happy to be drawing breath.  I will have to have surgery on my left shoulder in the next few months & then maybe I can shoot a bow again.  If not, I had a great time when I could.

BTW the guy who hit me got a 3 month jail sentence suspended if he did 72 hours of community service and passed an alchohol treatment class... Be careful, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Make sure you tell the ones who matter to you that they do.

Jim

Thanks, DanaM

As the crow flies, likely fairly close but I would be closer to the south portion of Michigan if one was driving. For me to get to the Upper Peninsula, would take a drive about six hours north to the top of Lake Superior  and many hours more to get to Michigan. I have been down to a couple of events in Marshall years past and the drive there took 4 - 5 hours and very memorable times.

It's like y'all say up there.  We come up with one white shirt, and a $50 dollar bill, and don't change either one.  At least Eddie's relatives.  Mine don't have fifty dollars between them.  And we don't know what a turn out is for either.  Besides is great sport to see how many cars we can get behind us, as we go white knuckled around the mountains.  We get extra points for any tractor trailers we can get in line also.

Chad, that's because you're from Mich. and not the "other" northern states.  You don't start a coversation with, well back in NY, etc.  That and few people from Michigan come down here to change it to be like up north.  So you are more easily accepted into the fold, than someone from the eastern north. I have Yankee cousins up in Trego, Wisconsin, formerly from St. Paul Min. El D, we are still tight man, you see there are Yankees, and then there are those D@#n Yankees.  Those are the ones who move down here and immediately start complaining, and whining how great it was up north.  And start whining to the D@#n Yankee city commissioners, and start building golf courses, Malls, that go bust in 4-5 years, and do it again two miles down the road.  I-95 goes north also.  Leaving Florida?  Take a Friend.   ;D  No offense meant to anyone from the eastern north.  My GirlFriend is a far left liberal from Mass.  But if you move to Fla. leave it the hell alone!  If you don't like it, go back.  You come down here and complain and whine the whole time.  Go back to where that is the accepted norm.  You can keep your tourism.  You come down here with a white shirt, and 100.00 bill, stay for two weeks, and don't change either one. :P  The true natives, are few and far between.  There are some transplanted southerners, who have been here a long time, but still not TRUE born here natives.  And the new generation of born here natives, are of recent arrvials from the eastern northern states.  So I guess you could say that they would be the native Whine-ahs.   ;D

Near Bancroft Ontario. Just getting started with primitive bow construction. Very interested in knapping and arrow making also. Delighted to find this terrific site.

Very helpful indeed. If you are near me, please touch base. Sure would be nice to talk to someone.

I've got the trees and the tools.(No band saw........yet)  I've bought the books. I've bust one maple self bow. I'm working with white ash, ironwood, and elm at the moment.

Cheers,

George

I live in Chesapeake, VA.   Interested in learning napping, but getting a late start at it. Just turned 56.

When I was visiting my Mom a couple summers ago in TN, one of her friends had a good sized shack out back on the side of a hill. Used it for knapping. I spent a day with him and he showed me a little of what he did and guided me through the process of making a point. He sent me home with a 5 gallon bucket with some rock in it, a piece of leather, a copper pressure flaker made from a deer antler and some hammer stones. Well, I quickly turned the rock into smaller rocks and ended up with a pile of gravel. I put  everything away. A couple month ago I was cleaning out my shed and found the bucket. It wetted my appetite again. This time, I spent about a month on the internet reading and watching videos, buying books and reading about knapping. I finally gave it another try starting with the same thing everyone else pretty much starts with... a beer bottle bottom. With a lot of blood, sweet and the use of word not fit for mixed company, I was able to make a point.  As they say, it ain't pretty, but it's my first! So know I'm hooked.

I am glad I stumbled across this sight and I'm enjoying reading all of the older threads.

A little about myself: I am orignially from Kentucky, own a couple acres outside Elizabethtown, KY and still call it home. I'm retired Navy and currently living in Chesapeake, VA. I just turned 56 and up until now, my only hobby was Golf. My day job is being the IT Director at a lawfirm in Norfolk, VA. Oh yea, I live with a wonderful lady who thinks I'm nuts for wanting to play with rocks.

Dear PA crew,

Greetings and salutations.  I do believe that I've read this post about a 50 or so times but I don't recall responding to it, before, maybe in my first week or so.
I'm Stephen Parnell.  I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, moving on to Philippines, Texas, Penn., Illinois, NJ.,NY.,R.I.,IL, again, then Florida.  Been here for about 6 years...steady.
I'm really into PA because it's about the only thing that I've found that allows me a bit of skill learning of things I wish I was taught, being raised.  I had a Pop that was more of a tie wearing man.  He was a good Pop but, he is gone, RIP.  I think that the effort men are making on this website everyday, out-do a lot of the male role models I've seen supporting kids in the community.  I've taught public school on and off.  I think that the "organic" thing that occurs here, has much to offer.  Personally, I'm going to follow along for awhile and see what ya'll have to offer.  Certainly, you've earned my humble respects.  I only really hope that my journey with this, great thing, is just getting started.

Stephen Parnell

I'm presently here in Iraq, but I'm from Philippines, land of lots of beautiful islands, with the help of one friend, who is serving in us army ( but he getout already in this dusty hot country) he taught me how to make a bow from the very beginning, and I had found out that it is a very exciting and very interesting kind of business. When I go back home I can apply all that I learned in making bow using our local wood in the Philippines. THANKS

Hey Charley, I'm originally from Sheldon, Vermont (That's next to Swanton and smaller.  You have to get a bigger map for it to show up.)  Since then the Army has moved me to New York, Alaska, and California, with brief stopovers in the Balkans and the Middle East.  We currently live at Fort Irwin, CA, just South of Death Valley.
Julian Benoit
That was me a couple years back, before I got all busy and let my account go inactive.  Still wonder if it was a good idea to change my call sign when I came back.  I'd been posting since '03 or so as Brokestick.  Back in NY again (at least the family is, I'm in Iraq again) so we're closer to home, and thankfully, closer to a supply of wood.  I survived my stay in the Mojave on wood I dragged down from Alaska with me.  Anyway, it's good to be back. :)

I grew up in Lubbock.  The first sixman game I ever saw was Silverton and Ropes.  I am very familure with Turkey.  Back in the 80s we use to come up for Bob Wills day.  And back in my coaching days (when I coached at Knox City ), we use to play Valley in the play offs.  That was when they played 11 man ball.

Knox city is not much off the caprock, I was refering to my land in Jayton.  I also have a cabin at White River.  Both are off the Caprock.  White River would be the closest.  If you are ever my way, let me know.  Im always up for a hog hunt or something.  My land in Jayton is eat up with hogs.

You actually are reasonably close to my deer lease, which is a little SE of Abilene at Cross Plains.  Normally I'd be over there quite a bit this time of year, but for some reason our hogs have left for someplace else.  Maybe they're up by you?

I think I know where your hogs went.  They moved to the west and invaded my land in Jayton.  My place has been eat up with them.  This year, while deer hunting, I had to carry a pocket full of rocks so I could throw at the hogs to run them off.  I set and counted 50 of them, one day, within an hour, down on the river.

I forgot to mention, one of my best friends lives on the man made lake at Princeton.  Ill be at his place this weekend.   It is a small world.

I just noticed something ironic.  Your lease is in Cross Plains, which is down the road from Dublin Texas.  HatchetA is originally from Dublin Ireland.  Now how funny is that?

I'm going to start chasing a growth ring on the crooked osage stave I posted about in the bows section.  It'll be interesting to see how well that goes.  I'd hoped to be hog hunting this weekend but that isn't going to happen as the place I can go to down South is now snowed in and my lease is now hogless.  It'll be nice to work on a bow again.  I'm going to start shooting as well.  I don't shoot near as much as I should.

Aha...ok, now I am edumacated on Canadian stores and such. 8)  So do they serve "tea and Crumpets","Fish and Chips" or actual donuts, and coffee? ::)  My God!  What would the Queen Mum think if she were offered a donut and a cup of coffee?!! :o  She just might say, By Gad!, That's ripping doncha know !  I think I'll have another!  Oh, my , there seems to be an awfully lot of powdered sugar on my hands, do you have a knife and fork, and another saucer, for my donut, please?  Oh, and another napkin, it looks like I ate a powder puff!   ;D Thanks Eddie.  The Rendezvous didn't seem as good as last years, and there were a couple of vender's that were not there.  I didn't see the flint lock you were talking about, but I did see a left hand flinch lock with the grease hole in the stock.  Barrel made in Japan.  Some of the Tower Flint locks, made in Japan, had pinned breach plugs. :o  So I don't think I want a Japanese made flinch lock. ;)  Especially a lefty.   ;D So when are you heading out again?

I'm currently residing in Stirling, Ontario - raised not far from Young Bowyer on Hwy 507, 1/2 mile from Curve Lake turn. I have been dabbling into the primitive archery scene a few times but have not been successful in building my own yet ( broke three so far ). I'm now an old codger and am determined to build one before this year is out. While I am still using my traditional longbows, at least I have become a convert to bamboo and cane arrows, making my own. They truly are nature's carbon. Amyway, thanks for allowing me in to the site.

If I hadn't thought it would cause a dangerous demand for, and there by shortage of, white canes and service dogs for the blind, I would'a done my ancestral blue painted necked rain dance.

And so the Texas/Houston drought continues nearly unabated, much to the relief of my neighbors.

Thanks for the  warm welcome Gus.

I primarily knap stone points and knives but I've been researching self bows for a while now and I want to gather as much knowledge from those of you guys that are actually doing it so that I can make my own.

This is a great site and I look forward to logging on every day.

Bud,

You're not that far from me. Drive on up to St Paul, pick an osage stave off my wood rack,  and we can have a bow bending for you in not very long. I can probably get some knapping tips from you while you're here. My shop is always available to a new bowyer.  EDIT: my shop's available to ANY bowyer (or knapper). :)

Cripple Creek CO. here, high up in the rocky's

That's God's country, grayflynt!

My wife and I took a road trip all through the mountains out there a few years ago. We drove all kinds of old mountain passes. We came to a point where it was left to Cripple Creek or right to go toward Colorado Springs. We had plans in the Springs, so we took a right. Next time, I think we'll go left.

I'm from Virginia, a state where it's easy to find woods I now live in Iowa sadly where mostly you find fields of genetically modified corn and soy and it's hard to find a decent woods around here that's bigger then a few acres

No, soy lives just to the north of you in Minnesota.  Great guy as long as you leave a whole state in between the two of you!   >:D

Nelson, New Zealand.

I'm basically in Marlborough, which some of you seem to be familiar with if you drink a bit of wine.

Just about to get into things and make my first bow. I have some Elm, but nearly everything is going to be native, so it should be pretty interesting :D

Alberta, Canada's redneck capital so they say. We have all the greatest serviceberry and chokecherry you could ever want. The chokecherry is too knarly unless you like those 45 inch native style bows.

Thanks Kevin!

Lots of European Ash matchsticks! A few light European Ash bows. I don't know if it's just Ash or my dry climate but damn those things break easier than I expected, lol.

About to embark on a boo-backed Spotted Gum pyramid-style flatbow. There will be photos of that :-)

And hunting... We'll see how that goes I guess. I have a feeling there's bunnies and maybe some venison in my future...

Just went through this whole post. I'm Brian from 13 miles south of Harbor Beach, MI. I live 3/4 of a mile from Lake Huron. Mix of farmland and woods. You cant drive more than 1/2 mile north or south without running into some creek that makes its way to the big lake. We have some Elm, Ash, HHB, Sugar Maple and a lot of others. Unfortunately most all of Ash are now dead from Emerald Ash Bore.

I got to go to my first Tennessee Classic and take it all in and know I really want to learn how to make my own bow. I guess I better behave and ask Pappy if I can drop by sometime and introduce myself and see if they are willing to help a noob get started.
