Never tried it, but I have always wanted to attempt one. I've read that the Cherokee in my area preferred bear gut for string material. I'm gonna try to round some up and make a string for a Cherokee longbow replica I'm working on.

While you are at it, make one from badger (another greasy omnivore) and maybe some other predators.  I want to know if bear is really better or just sounds cooler.  >:D Justin

It's quicker than making a sinew string that's fer sure. Intestines really shrink down when dried so it takes multiple plies. They seem to be more durable than rawhide unless you use smaller hides and more plies than deer. Twist them when damp, dry them like a sinew string, and off you go. If you want to get a lot of material out out of season buy natural sausage casing. Yup, hog or sheep isn't as cool as using deer, but it's a lot less stinky than getting guts out of a roadkilled deer in August... They pop when you stick'em if they've been sitting too long.

I hate to eat fish, it is a matter of taste, and the only thing I hate more than that it to catch an release, that is just plain cruel.  But I enjoy fishing.  I and I am happy to share the catch with someone who will eat it.  So, if I gut the critters, can I get enough gut to make a bow string?  TBBII suggests, with out stating clearly, that it is not the gut, but the inner casing that is of use.  Is that right?  If so, how do you get it out?  Pictures therein suggest that intestines would be about nine times the lenth of the fish, is that about right for a bench mark?  Seems like it would be fun to catch a mess, cut them put, save some skins and guts and share the flesh. Any thouhts?

If you go fishing and  catch a bunch, make sure to save the air bladders.  You can make fish glue with them that is comparable to hide glue but is more water resistant and more pliable. As for gut from fish, there is only one way to find out.  Let us know how it works.  Justin

I've made gut strings from sausage casings, Pig gut.

I did some research a few years ago on gut, the type used for stringing tennis rackets and I found out that cattle gut is far stronger than any other gut, makes me wish I still had cows. If anyone has access to cattle gut it would be worth trying

I would guess that would apply to all the bovine.  I am going to make hamburger from an old range cow here shortly, if her gut ain't tough from living on sagebrush and blackbrush, nothing will be.  ;D Justin

You can keep the whitefish and send me the walleyes. The walleyes will be starting their spawning runs here by the end of the month if we get some nice weather. Mmmmmmm. Seems like once again we've headed a thread into the kitchen. Where else in the world could you start talking about stringy bear guts and wind up with walleye fillets dipped in beer batter and deep fried golden brown with fried taters and homemade hushpuppies and a little bit of lemon juice squoze on 'em?  ;D

Won't argue with ya to much on the walleye, but cajun broiled whitefish is oh so good, and better than walleye is there smaller cousin the yellow perch,
then again bluegill is pretty fine, hmmm northen pike properly prepared are also tasty, then again fresh brookies wrapped in tinfoil on hot coals is simple but elegant,
then their are the smelt rolled in flour with al ittle salt and pepper fried in a smoking hot cast iron pan on the bank of the stream with a chilly beverage now that is pure delight.

I have to go a long way for walleye, but we have plenty of bluegill and crappie.  I can go 5 minutes from the house and catch rainbow trout and catfish.  I would rather eat the catfish fillet and breaded.  Lots of brookies and browns too. Not a huge fan of largemouth and striped bass.  Justin

Now that would be an ecological disaster.  Ask Bob what is happening to the native species in Fl. now that everybody is turning loose their tank fish, snakes and lizards. Ever heard of the Northern Snakehead, it was released and is taking over the waterways of the eastern US and California.  They tear up the pond just like your tank. Pull them out of the tank and smack them in the head with a hammer.  Justin

What Justin said !!!!                       Dont even get me started on this or we will be here fer 4-5 hours ! >:( Peacock bass(buttefly ) were introduced here in south florida in the late 80's ta eat the exotic species foks are throwin' in the canals, streams and rivers. Not ta mention releasin' other critters in the swamps an fields etc. They ( peacock ) come from the amazon and they LUVS ta eat piranha ! ;D They (peacocks ) are also in the kissimmee lake chain. Ha ! I have seen anacondas, pythons, crocs, camen, iguanas, monkeys, piranha an somethin' else in swamps that ya woulda not believe !  :o  I dont think foks know er care what happens to the native species when ya do this. The exotics have NO natural enemies here like where they come from. The monkeys escaped during hurricane andrew from the so. florida zoo in 1992. They have established themselves in the glades and so forth. They are hell on native parrots and birds. Dont let anyone tell ya they are vegetarians ! Bull#^%$ ! Killed a coupla them and ATE em as I do piranha, python an anacondas. Kinna poetic justice dont ya think ? I know about so.florida but I betcha Eddie (mullet ) can tell ya more about central florida. I got a green an yella iguana that lives in my backyard in the trees. Aint had a shot at it yet BUT DINNERS COMIN" ! ;D......................bob

I'm with Bob. We have so much Exotic crap running around down here it's starting to get fun. Yankee, those fish look like Paku, False Pirahna. That's all you can legally buy in the U.S. I have a friend that had 2 real ones for Educational purposes that were amazing. You could drop a Gunea Pig in and it looked like you put it in a Food Processor on High. And That Great Lakes white fish you can keep. I went to one of those Fish Boils  in Wisconsin a couple of years ago, well, I'd be glad to show them how to fillet and fry it ,served up with Grits and Hushpuppies.

No wonder ya don't like whitefish mullet, its best broiled, boiled fish sucks. Since when has it been illegal to buy piranha?
I used to have them. Haven't been to pet shop in a few years but they always had the red bellied piranha.

I guess it's a state-by- state thing. NC has had a law against possessing piranha, walking catfish, grass carp, and a bunch of other species long as I can remember. They added the snakeheads to the list a year or two ago. Somebody caught a big 'ol piranha out of a little lake near where I live a few years ago.

A bunch of those are on the Federal list.  In Utah it is illegal to get caught transporting/releasing any fish with exception of coarse of catch and release.. They must be dead before you leave the water.  We have had problems with things as simple as rainbow trout being released.  The native cutthroat and brown trout have suffered where these have been introduced.  Chub is also a huge problem.  They have really hurt the fishery at Lake Powell and many other lakes.  Justin

you just cut off workable section about 6 feet, all about the same size diam. wise and rinse them out good with hose.
them ya take a long thin limber stick and poke a tiny hole by the opening of the gut and push the whole thing inside out and wash again.
when you get most of the junk off and lightly scrape any fatty residue/ meat away, you soak it in a salt brine.
this kills alot of the bad stuff, and helps it cure.

then after a day or two in brine rinse again and slice the gut into 3/8 inch or so strips. ya should just fold it in half split it , and then fold that half and split it. this will yield 2 ,2 ply strings.

then i would hand a weight from a nail in rafter in a dry place with air flow to stretch and dry...DO NOT TWIST.
AT THIS POINT YOU ARE JUST DRYING IT TO STORE!

then i just throw it in a piece of pvc so critters dont get at it and it stays dry, till you want to rehydrate and make string/cordage.

then make your string.
