Finally had some nice weather for a bow photoshoot. I ended up taking lots of pics...bear with me. This is a bow I had been working on for a while. Stave was a well seasoned shorter piece of osage from crooket arrow. I got a little aggressive bending the tips and lifted some good splinters. Rasped this down flat and glued on chunks of yew. The yew ended up developing checks in drying, but I got that licked with a little horn lamination as "runners" on the outer edge of the brush nocks and then also in the valley of the upper nock. The bow is backed with whitetail rawhide applied with hideglue. The tip overlays are bison horn. The bow draws 60# even at 28" but I find myself shooting it at a shorter draw of about 26" to 27". It is 54" as measured straight-line nock to nock. It has enough set after shooting that the recurve tips lay just ahead of the handle. Reflexed an inch after resting. The grip is cane wrap. It put up 164 fps after a long session of shooting with a 9.5 gpp arrow. The finish is shellac followed by alternating coats of raw linseed oil and a string wax blend I make from beeswax and fir rosin. This bow was a labor of love. It is a joy to shoot and maneuvers nicely through the woods.

Very cool!

And the reason I named it Kingfisher was this guy who was scolding me for a bit while I was taking photos.

I will be going back to look at this bow more than once for sure. Outstanding!
-
Now THAT is a nice bow! What a work of art! Truly inspiring.
-
What a beautiful bow, that took alot of talent.
-
Awesome!
-
8) Way cool 8) + 1 Osage Outlaw
You really got into those tips..............
Very nice , how many arrows you got through her???
Dbar
-
WOW! :o Great work on that one, truly a beauty!
-
Thanks guys. I don't know about talent Dave. I think I got pretty lucky...here is a photo of the single alignment correction I made to the stave.
-
Stunning!
-
You pulled that off nicely! Love the brush nocks :o you are an artist 8)
-
Beautiful work! I really love a good set of brush nocks.
-
Magical!
-
I've been waiting to see this bow get posted for a long time. I'm not disappointed. The tiller is bang on and the tips are truly killer. This bow will be bow of the month, it's really great. I just have one question, how much did you have to pay that male stripper to pose for your full draw shots? >:D
-
Beautiful bow, classic look.
-
That has got to be one of the prettiest bows I've ever seen.
-
That is a great looking bow Carson! Beautiful piece of osage!
-
Danzn I have got about 300 arrows through her now. I had one scare, when I had it braced a little low...I shot and suddenly the brace was at like 3"!! I looked at the upper nock and the string had hopped off the track and was off the side of the brush nock. I unstrung, raised the brace up, and kept shooting. Hasn't happened again.
Here is a video of some arrows coming off her string...sorry Weylin, I am not shirtless in the video ;D

-
You pulled that off nicely! Love the brush nocks :o you are an artist 8)
Thanks Will. Listened to your music last night via spotify. Good stuff! Your an artist!
Thanks guys for the compliments. I have been looking forward to sharing this bow with the community for a while. I am not sure what happened to my shirt. I was taking these myself with the timer on the camera, and when i reviewed one of the full draw shots, I swear it just didn't look right with a shirt in the pic ;D
-
Amazing bow! Everything about it is awesome.
-
Beautiful Work. I look forward to seeing this on the 4th. Really something to see, and great photography. Santiam or Willamette?
-
that is awesome!
-
Thats some fancy wood shaping on those brush knocks mister, you must have a fair amount of time into crafting that beauty. I watched the video too and it looks to be a smooth and snappy shooter as well, a real standout from the crowd kinda bow Carson, nicely done.
-
Thanks Zion, Thank you Dave. That is the Santiam behind my grandparents house in Jefferson.
-
Very nice bow Carson and the brush nocks are quite sexy.
-
" The Most Interesting Nocks " 8)
-
ABOUT FLIPPIN TIME YOU FINIAHED THAT BEAST!
Good work bud:)
-
The bow is incredible! But I especially like the alignment picture. It looks like you just kept adding clamps and devises until it was aimed in the right direction. Did you have a plan when you started?
Don
-
That thing is rediculous ! very nice bow man !
Oh and thanks for reminding me how bad I suck at making bows ~! :-[
-
Elijah, maybe sometime if you ever get the chance drop in on us oregon fellos and we'll get yah up to speed;)
-
Man Carson that thing looks like a screamer. Amazing job on everything. One of the nicest most original bows I've seen. And you managed to get some yew on there. Love it.
-
VERY nice - well done ! Bob
-
That bow is too cool for school............................ 8)
It's got me thinking why haven't I done any brush nocks yet after all recurves are my favourites.
-
thats a beauty. i love those nocks. and the finish work looks great to.
-
That is truly a work of art! The shape of those nocks show a lot of skill, and the tiller is spot on.
-
WOW!!! That is killer! Love the nocks... very smart using yew to keep the weight down. Tiller is perfect too. Nicely done.
-
Nice looking bow.
-
Absolute stunner. 8)
-
WOW! :o Also I say that's that hero pic of the year for 2013
-
Beautiful bow Carson. Thanks for sharing. Dean
-
WOW! That is stunning. Great job.
-
Thanks Pat, Thank you B. Donald. Bryce, you can't rush these things. A finish that is dry, is not the same as a finish that is seasoned ;D ;D
The bow is incredible! But I especially like the alignment picture. It looks like you just kept adding clamps and devises until it was aimed in the right direction. Did you have a plan when you started?
Don
Is it that obvious? I even got a short yew paddle bow stave involved (see under the bench) ;D. For anyone considering buying a bar clamp from harbor freight that is on sale for 1.99...dont do it. I cant believe I fell for that.
Elijah, thank you. I think Bryce is getting at a fact that Oregon has a strong legacy of bowyers from Chet Stevenson, B.J. Thompson, Gilman Keasey to modern day John Strunk that have set the bar really high for us young whipper-snappers.
Thank you for the very nice words Matt!
Thank you Chamookman.
Thanks Mike, yeah, get after those brush nocks!
Thanks Danny
Thanks Josh
Thanks adb, just seemed that using yew was the right thing to do.
Thanks Ryan
Thanks Dwardo.
Thanks Tom :)
Thanks Dean. I was really excited to share this one with everybody.
Thanks ryoon
I did "really get into those tips. I took lots of photos of those brush nocks to try and show the shape. " I probably reduced them down in size in 3 or 4 different sessions with a tapered round file while sitting in my stavemaster. Everytime I would come back to the bow to work on it, I would look at those brush nocks and think, still too much bulk, and so I would reduce them a little more.
-
You upped the bar at least a foot with that one Carson. It's going to take one heck of a bow to top that one.
-
Very nice
-
Like so many others have said WOW great bow and pics! The bow has a really cool "primitive" look-Awesome!Hammertime
-
Thank you Gordon.
Thank you Mark.
Thank you Jeff. I really appreciate all the nice comments. I was really excited to share this bow with everyone!
-
Saweeeet man! Love the brush nocks
-
Absolutely fantastic! There's not much more to say about this. :-X
-
Meanwhile, as I just go ahead and burn down my workshop...
-
Carson....man, you amaze me. But then with my skills it doesn't take much...haha Really a great hard hitting bow. Clout and Wand bow? Good to see a selfbow that hit the 60# mark too.
-
That has to be one of the coolest bows that I have ever seen posted on here. Outstanding craftsman Sir.
-
Beautiful work on the whole thing, and super attention to detail! A work of art, fitting name
-
My allready poor english is completly muted by the task of describing this bow.
really beautiful!!
-
That handle is amazing, the attention to detail is top shelf! Great bow all around.
-
Great looking bow, Tiller is dead on!
-
I knew it was going to be cool but you nailed that. WOW!
-
fantastic!!! really love the grumley style brush nocks. what camera do you have, the clarity of the pics are great.
-
NICE!
way to overcome the problems.
-
I love it! That full draw is absolutely perfect.
-
Thanks Blafair
Thanks Jodocus
Sled, do not do that, you are turning out some beautiful bows!!!
Dave L, no, I have a bow for the clout and wand in the works...looong yewbow ;) I am thinking the Kingfisher mojo in this one might make it a great bowfishing bow. Btw, I have a bow for you that is shaping up. >:D
Tallpine, wow! Thank you!
Peacebow thank you
Glis, that is a very nice thing to say.
Palioguy, Thank you
Thanks misslemaster. It might not look like a challenging piece of wood to tiller, but it challenged me.
Thanks Brad
Dave C, The camera is an entry level Canon SLR, an xti I believe. Most photos were taken with the cheap kit lens that it came with, but the close-ups were taken with a sweet 100mm canon macro lens. I justified the purchase of it when I was working for the Forest Service catching bats. Lots of bat photo opportunities and not a lot of good bat photos out there.
Thanks Prairie bowyer
Thank you Victor
Thank you Crooketarrow for the stave trade.
-
Really nice man. Every time I've done brush nocks I end up unhappy with the bow for one reason or another and end up chopping them off. I have a little pile of them. haha
-
Boy Carson, you knocked that one out of the park!
-
Man Carson I keep coming back to this thing. It just keeps blowing my mind. Such an original.
-
Thanks bowmo. I like these brush nocks too. I might have to try them again
Thank you Don.
Thanks Matt, I am glad you like it. We are lucky to have this group to share our bows with.
-
Have you been hanging out with billy burger ??? Cool bow man!
-
Dude....
That is pure class.
It's got a sort of Art Deco quality to it, clean, simple elegant. Each element is in keeping with each other bit.
The photography is great too, the muscle shot is classical too. (I won't let Mrs Cat see it :-* .)
Nice bit of character waggle too, not so much that it won't perform, but just enough to be interesting... I'm running out of superlatives.
Del
If I was going to be fussy I'd say the tiller is a bit...
Nah... just kidding >:D
She's perfect
-
That's a cool Michigan original design Carson. Its on my VERY long list of bows to build. Great job man.
-
That one of the best bows this year for sure. Great pictures too.
p.s thanks for the take down sleeves they are as you said superior quality :D
-
Have you been hanging out with billy burger ??? Cool bow man!
Ha HA! No, but I hear Billy is supposed to be coming out this way for a rabbit hunt. I need to finish my loin cloth....
Thanks Del. Now I am tiller conscious... ::) Thanks for the kind superlatives ;D
Thanks Chris. The Grumley brush nocks are quite a unique design. It was fun to find my way through this build.
Thanks Nathan, I am glad you are happy with the t/d sleeves. :)
-
Can't pass a chance to say something about this one Carson. Unfortunately I'm speechless. E wry thing you touch turns out amazing bro...really amazing!
-
holy smokes is that a looker! those nocks are just spectacular
-
I keep coming back to see this bow again. Really awesome work. Tiller can't get much better than that.
-
swet bow Carson, those tips look like they came right out of the Hobbit, as for the pin up full draws, great bend but the last time I went shooting without a shirt there was a bunch of sasquatch sightings ::)
-
perfect tiller! nocks are really nice, bet they took forever ...but worth it... i think its fun trying new styles of nocks, keeps it interesting.
-
Thanks Dan
Thanks Gopher
Thank you hrhodes
Thanks bubby
Thanks sa
Here are some photos of how I did the horn inlay to repair the dry checks cracks in the yew brush nock build up.
(http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k633/Acer_circinatum/01-EchoArcheryDec003_zps2b61d8f3.jpg) (http://s1119.photobucket.com/user/Acer_circinatum/media/01-EchoArcheryDec003_zps2b61d8f3.jpg.html)
Here you see the drying check/crack in the yew. This one did not present itself until I had repaired the major ones in the brush nock with the blonde horn "runners" on the top of the brush nock. This pattern of repairing one crack, and a new one appears happened several times...resulting in the three different horn inlays in the brush nock valley. The cracks only presented themselves when the tip of the bow was grasped and unnaturally bent backwards to pry open the weak dry check.

I hot-glued a piece of blonde horn onto a 5/16" arrow shaft. with a flat spot carved in.

After ensuring a tight fit, both surfaces are scored with a knife tip and glued up with super glue.

Soooo Deadly!
-
BUZZINGAAAA!!!
Man, that is one cool bow!
-
It bears repeating: Those brush nocks are stunning.
-
Stunning is the word Zen. Had the privilege of seeing this bow first hand. The wood is beautiful, and the quality of the workmanship really brings the beauty out. Absolutely one of the neatest bows I've seen.
-
The Primitive Archer magazine's target demographic might shift a little toward the female side once those topless pictures show up on the BOM centerfold Carson! ;) ha ha
Very interesting and unique bow! If that was in my hands, I'd have a very hard time letting go of it.
-
I saw this bow on Saturday. It is magnificent. Fortunately Carson had his clothes on.
M
-
Very primitive artistic bow! Nocks are cool and eccentric. Tiller is dead on, just look at the last draw photo. Very nice work Carson!
Tracy
-
Man Carson that bow is too cool. Great job again

Killer bow, and I mean that in all best possible meanings of the word. Thanks for setting a high bar as I start a project – that will never reach this Olympic level of achievement!

-
beauty in every way shape and form! 8)
-
Thanks again guys.
Thanks so much guys. It means quite a lot considering the bows in the line-up. I was so stoked to find out today, that when the sun came out and warmed up the afternoon, I grabbed kingfisher and took her out. I was looking for cottontails, but instead came back with two very lovely garter snakes of the red-headed phase. The first one was in the grass and I just swatted him with arrow in hand. Looking for a match, I spotted this one at the water's edge, made a lucky head shot with the bow and he made no move for the depths. Kingfisher's first blood :D

I got the pair pinned down and dried out. They are going to look very nice on a narrow ELB.
BTW, 2013 was the year of the snake, so this was a fitting first kill
-
Your bear bow??? That would be slick bro

Tell us about the hunt! How far was the shot, where was the shot placement etc. etc.

FINALLY! Something more dignified for this bow than shooting harmless little garter snakes! A very handsome set of backstraps, OOPS, I mean antlers!
-
Outstanding!!

Wow Carson that's a dandy man. What a cool thing. Great job.

Beautiful bow and buck!
-
Very nice. Good looking Muley. I'm trying to find someone local to hunt bow making material. If you're interested, let me know. I'm fairly new to traditional archery, so I'd be gratefull for the help.
-
tillstave, you will find lots of local enthusiasm and help with all things traditional archery here in Oregon. Where abouts are you located? I would be happy to get you into the circles.

Realizing I never shared the hunting story here as some had asked to hear. Well, here it is, taken from an e-mail back in late September.
I was asked by John Kelley to share the tale of my successful hunt...and my first archery harvest! Here is the short version (look for the long-winded version in a future Primitive Archer magazine issue):
Opening morning I had a nice three point buck tagged. This buck sort of offered himself up to me.
I was slowly working my way into a waterhole/wallow I knew of from a couple of years back...by the way, this is Sled Springs unit of the Wallow Mountains. I thought I was getting close to the water, but things looked different as some significant logging operations had occurred in the time since I was last there. After sitting and checking my map, I got up to proceed only to spy a buck looking at me from about 35 yards away on a little rim. He had me pinned, but he didn't seem too alarmed. I tried my best to disguise my intentions, and so without much pause, I turned and took a few steps back to where I had been sitting and sat right back down, casually keeping my eye on him, looking over my shoulder through the cover of some brush. He looked curious and so I played on it, throwing pine-cones out into the gravel roadbed and making little squirrel sounds. He started coming down the hill towards me, but eventually decided it wasn't right and turned to face back up hill. I got up with an arrow nocked and drew on him at about 30 yards, now broadside. I let the arrow fly, and it went right over his back, but the sound of the arrow hitting the ground on the other side of him sent him in a short loop only to give me another broadside shot at 30 yards. As I drew back this time, he took two steps towards me giving me only a complete front facing shot. It felt right and I let it loose. The heavy arrow struck him right in the neck, and he dropped to the ground. It was pretty incredible.
The next day I missed two spike Elk, both jumped the string on long shots. Then just about two weeks ago, I hit a beautiful roosevelt 6 point herd bull high in the back. Luckily, it was very poor penetration and he went away with just a minor flesh wound. I had cow-called him back in for a second chance when the herd cow let out a loud bark, leading him to back out of the deal.
Hope everyone else had a great time in the woods. Always lots to enjoy and learn, but sometimes we even get meat out of it!
Happy trails,
Carson

That's awesome Carson, sounds like it was quite an experience. I hope one day to have a similar one.
