Id sure like you to Eddie. Its a hum-dinger for sure. Very big shoot, but lots of ground to roam and camp on. Makes it feel smaller than it is. The Saturday night dinner line shows the amount of folks really there. They come out of the wood work with empty plates!

Pat & Eddie, it would be great to see you both at Elm Hall.  The Classic and the Elm Hall shoot are the two that I wouldn't miss.  The Elm Hall gang sure put on a good time.  The Wirwicki's will be there just for fun, this year.

I guess I should start planning to work in Marshall during the last week of July so that I can run up to elm hall Thursday night and spend the weekend.
I love coming back to Michigan when ever i can and everyone seems pretty stoked about this event so it's now on the calendar!
It will be good to see you all again and I'll bring my own arrows for this one Cody.

We'd be glad to have ya' at the club Ed. Like most folks, the Saturday night dinner will "sell" you on this event. Its an amazing plethora of food to pick over.

Chris, I'm always in when good food is involved!! At the classic I've brought things to cook and share for the Saturday pot luck, is this the same type of feast?

I do have a freezer full of Moose from last fall's trip to Newfoundland,  and I the Forest Farmer does know how to cook up some game.

Nearly all the food is donated and prepared by club members and their spouses, but I can promise you a package or three of moose meat would be much appreciated.

Thanks for  reminding me Greg, I guess I forget to mention that I've been a brewer for far longer than I've been trying to build bows?  I managed to put a batch together just for the classic this year and I guess it wouldn't be right not to do the same for the Elm Hall event.

I will  definitely bring up a few choice cuts of moose and  I will try to get a batch of beer together also.

Ed, we weren't introduced at Marshall but a good home brew would be the perfect way to fix that! ;)
Title: Re: Elm Hall shoot Aug 1-3
Post by: Forest_Farmer on June 05, 2014, 01:06:18 am
Over the years always found that a well made home brew is a good way to meet people and make new friends.  If I do have time to make up a batch it would be good to know what most people like to drink.

At this years classic I made a English style ale, which was not to strong or overly bitter, nice amber color and dry hopped.  I could make that again, but I make a very nice IPA that I that is similar to a Bell's two hearted (the Michigan boys should know that one).  I also do an American or German wheat beer that would be good in for the August heat.

Put your two cent in and If life doesn't get in the way I'll try to make up a batch.

Pappy, Pappy, Pappy.  You do a great thing by hosting the TN classic and you've been great with lots of advise and letting me stop by to twin oaks, but I don't think that I could look at myself in the mirror if I made a Miller lite clone.  That would be kind of like me asking someone on this site to make me a bow with wheels on it,,,,,ouch.  ;)

Now there is nothing wrong with commercial beers, they do a great job of making a very consistent high quality product, but as i'm learning to make and shoot REAL bows by the other good people in this forum, I think it's my duty as a craft brewer to give others the opportunity to try real live beer, just like our ancestors made.  "plus making a  good tasting "lite beer" is tough to do.

I'm on a mission now, maybe I should make a "transition" beer, like an American wheat.

;) ;D ;D ;D ,My problem is when I want to drink beer,I want to drink beer and
if you drink your beer like I drink Miller I wouldn't be much good and probably
spend most of my time sleeping. ;) :) :) either way,you do make some tasty beer
I just need to learn the word MODARATION. Really looking forward to this event
I get to see lots of folks at this gathering that I only see once a year plus the food and ranges are as good as it gets. :) MI. is a very special place, you go from woods almost like we have in TN. to cedar swamps to sand duns and small lakes everywhere they dig a hole, and weather that can change in a few minutes, they got it all. ;) :)

I have a friend in Delaware who is interested in coming to the Elm hall event but he really wants to see/ learn about making bows, knapping ect,
Does the Elm Hall have a similar set up as the TN classic where
people are working on and selling primitive archery stuff?
Title: Re: Elm Hall shoot Aug 1-3
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on June 07, 2014, 11:54:05 am
No Ed. there is no designated build area. But Im sure myself and maybe a few others will have portables set up to work wood on. The big factor is heat. As you know it can get damn hot in early August and drawing a knife can kick your hiney. If Im not building a bow, Id still be more than happy to run my mouth for hours about primitive archery gear. Probably will anyway!
Title: Re: Elm Hall shoot Aug 1-3
Post by: Forest_Farmer on June 08, 2014, 10:30:56 am
Thx Chris, I'll pass this on and see if he's going to make it. I know he really wanted to check out the techniques of building the bows and knapping.

For me this type of event will be good so I can focus on my shooting skills. Plus it will give me a chance to talk to you seasoned bowers about designs, and possibly  shoot some of the sweet bows that others have made.

I really enjoyed shoot with you, greg and blackhawk at marshall (thx). It's pretty cool to hold some of the bows  that are featured in the bow of the month section of PA in person.  Kind of like holding one of Jimmy Hendrix's guitars.  ;D

Can't wait,
Ed

Not quite like the Classic Ed,more of a meeting/greeting/eating and lots of bull being thrown around, with some bow shooting going on. Really laid back and very relaxing for me. I watch some of the guys work on bow,but like Chris said, usually just to hot for that,so I set in the shade and relax. :) :)  :) Get to shoot a lot of different bow and a ton of bow and hunting talk going on. :) Great week. :)

Sounds like a perfect way to spend some of the dog days of August.  Is it right on the pine river or close by?  I use to canoe it when I was a kid and I could see sitting in a tube and float down the river if it's real hot.
Title: Re: Elm Hall shoot Aug 1-3
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on June 09, 2014, 10:10:45 am
The Pine is right on the grounds Ed. The course usually goes right by it, or you actually shoot unto a gravel bar and get wet retrieving your arrow, orrrrrr pay the kids sitting along the bank a buck to grab it for you! They swim it all weekend. Its clear and cool.

Good news all!

We've decided to add a self bow "shop" to the event this year. We will put up a 12 x 16 (or so) tent with four picnic tables and a tiller tree. So Ed, yes we will be working bows in some capacity this year my friend! Ive been hoping this would happen. I know plenty of people want to see the work and learn the work involved in self bow building.

YIPPY!

YIPPY!

Awesome!

Pappy its looking like we are going to set it up by the kids sandbox and fish cooking area. North side of the club house. But, under the trees by the dumpster wouldn't be bad either. Ill check it over next time Im out.

That's great news Chris,  I'll let my buddy know and tell him that you are adding the building area just for him.  This way I can gilt him into driving from Delaware .
I'm pretty stoked as well,  I really wanted to work on a bow for this fall.  I'll bring a stave I started at the classic plus a couple of raw ones.
I don't have a tun of tools but I'll bring what I have and I guess I'm pretty much obliged now to get cracken and  brew up a keg.  ;D ;D
Thx

Yup, I think that spot will be perfect. Its open and breezy, plus shaded nicely. Ill have a tiller tree and my Cody vice with me. Plus another small 4" jaw vice clamped down to a table. Hopefully the Missle Master makes his way up as well. I know Drew,  RyanR and Dan-O will be there as well. Should have plenty of tools and experienced eyes around Ed.

That is correct OneBow,lots of great events to go to and spend time with like minded folks, hard to beat that. I am very fortunate to have several that hang out
with me all the time, but lots do this stuff on their own most of the time,so to go to some place where you have lots doing the same thing is really cool. Really looking forward to this one. :) See you guys in 6 weeks or so. :) Close to the cooking also Pearl, that is always a plus. ;) :) :)

Ed you could just mount a vice on a chunk of  2 x 10, then clamp it to a table w c-clamps. That works pretty good to, and it saves building a horse for now.

A 10 x 20 is still a good sized area.  It will be nice.
I've attached a couple of pics of the stave that I'm going to be working on.  It's pretty straight the growth rings are kind of tight.  I'm thinking about taking it to the second ring from the back.  The Summered is only about a 16th of an inch thick, but the stave is too thin to take it down any further, I think.
Any suggestions?

Im not promising anything from them except they are yellow inside and caramel on the outside. All will have bark still. Im hoping to have at least 12-15 of them with me. Most will be 3-4 years old as well. I could use some dry, peeled HHB, elm or hackberry.

If I don't win  I have made progress on the stave that I posted a while back.  I should have it ready for some straightening.  It's going to be about 66". And I wanted to reflex it and put a flip on the tips.  So if anyone has a jig and room. I would love to bend something.

That makes two of us Pappy.  Even if we don't win a bow just being able to spend some time with good people, in the outdoors, doing things we enjoy is winning enough!
It sounds like everyone's been working hard to get the place ready so giving some money to help the club is a good thing and the chance to win one of Chris's works of art is a bonus!
I'll be rolling in on Friday afternoon. See you then!

I guess I'll have to buy a few tickets since it's for a good cause but I don't like it, I already have a Pearly bow hanging on the bow rack making the bows that I made look like the work of an amateur. ;D

Hogwash Greg! I have a badly bent bow on my rack that makes mine look like a kindergartner finished them.

Here is a crappy pic of the bow.

Glad to hear that you're coming also Greg,  and I think  I saw the bow you made for Chris and that was truly a work of art.  When I come to these events and see what everyone is making its both inspirational and humbling.
It will be good to see you and make sure you bring a pint glass!
Ed

Ps
I just got the new issue of PA and saw  that you (Greg), Peril and Blackhawk all won now of the month!  Congratulation , way to go!   I'll be hitting you all up for guidance and suggestions on the bow I'm working on next week.  I generally pay for advice with beer  :o

Ed, I generally don't like giving someone direction on their bow building for fear of giving out the wrong advice. I screw up as many bows as I succeed on, maybe more. :o   But..... get a few beers in me and I'm likely to loosen up and start giving out a bunch of bad advice, use at your own risk. >:D
See ya next week. :)

No worries Greg any advise can be given and I'm sure it will give me better insight than I have now (which is very little).

I forgot to say congrats to Pappy also for the bow of the month.  That's a nice piece of yew Mark, I'd love to fling a arrow with it to see how if feels,  Matt W seemed to really like it so it must be a smooth shooter!
See ya next Friday.

Hey Chris, how many targets on the practice range? I'm done fighting the bugs and poison ivy this year! Will the long shot bear target be there again? I'm bringing a couple of selfbows this year so I don't get the stinkeye for shooting a glass bow! ::) ;)
Title: Re: Elm Hall shoot Aug 1-3
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on July 29, 2014, 09:36:35 am
The only other range to shoot is the stuffed bag range. I think there are 6-8 bags lined up on the rifle range. Don't let a few bugs and poison ivy slow ya' down you ol' sissy teach! The way it has been up here this year you'd have to stay indoors all summer! Bugs and ivy are EVERYWHERE in this state. I was hiking the Manistee last weekend and seen it everywhere there to, plus skeeters.

Actually, the money bear and a few other novelty shoots will be available. One brand new I guess. Plenty of chances to lose arrows!

I'm going to be driving down from Traverse City on Saturday (or possibly Friday night). Can't find anyone to come with me so I'm definitely going to feel like a fish out of water dropping myself in the middle of a bunch of people I've never met before. So if you see a long-haired bearded guy wandering around looking out of place, don't hesitate to say Hi.

Had fun shooting and visiting on Saturday The course was set-up great and has the best selection and quality of targets of any shoot I've shot. Shot with KHalverson and we didn't lose any arrows and tree'd only a few. The bugs were not as bad as they could've been and the long course was not muddy enough to really be a problem. Your home club did a great job Pearly!

This was my first time at Elm Hall and all I can say is great job!!!
The site, people,  raffles, bow tent and FOOD!! Dinner Saturday night was worth the price of admission alone.
I need to say a special thanks to Chris "Pearl drums" for organizing the bow tent and helping me out with making a aw some bow!   We got her shooting Sunday afternoon and I'll post some pics once I get her dressed up.

Thx to Badly bend, DQ, and a hand full of others on Saturday for helping me out as well.  A great bunch of people and very knowledgable.  Hope to see you all next spring at the TN Classic.  I will make sure I have extra beer brewed for the Michigan/ Illinois crew who come down!
Cheers to all!!

Great event once again, a big thanks to all the hard working members who make it so nice for the rest of us to enjoy.
I left a lot of blood out there on the course but had more fun in the four days I was there than I'll likely have in the next month of days. Was good to see all my friends again and to make new ones as always happens at these kind of gatherings. I took pictures but broke my camera saturday when I sat on it and I can't retrieve them.
A big thanks to Chris and Bob for the staves, and another big thanks to my friend Paul for the bad@$$ osage bow he crafted and gave to me, I love it brother. Can't wait till next year. :)

Chris,
Funny thing about talking with Darryl is that it took me a while to figure out who he was. Then I explained to him that I first got interested in self bows after reading a series of articles that he wrote several years ago for Michigan based "Woods and Water" Magazine.  He did a build with Gary Davis and I though it was so cool that I would have to try it some day.

Fast forward to 2013 and after reading a article in Primitive Archer that Matt W wrote about the TN classic, I made it to Pappy's for the classic that year and built a bow with Matt.  Again, I didn't know that Matt wrote the article in PA until we got talking.

While at the classic in 2013 I spent time talking with Gary Davis, bought some skins from him and didn't realize that he was the guy that was teaching Darryl in those articles several years ago.

How cool and Ironic is that,,,,,almost spooky,,lol

I'm finding that to be true as well Chris. In the 2 events I have attended this year, the welcome and friendliness has been outstanding. Can't wait to meet up with everyone again.

Yeah, I have found the people at every event I've attended to be very friendly and genuine .  I've only been into primitive archery for a short time and I already feel at home at events and on the forum.
Love it!

MANY thanks to everyone that attended this year. You are truly a wide and varied and GREAT group of people! For those of you who don't know, Brent Singer has been the event manager for two years now and has a great committee in Pearlie and K Hills and great support from the PRRC club members and families. AGAIN....thank you for your support. The next shoot is only 51 weeks from now!!! See you then. :) :) :)

Anyone know how much KHALVERSON'S knife went for in the silent auction. The knife and sheath were some of his normal awesome work! I donated some "Vintage" gear for a door prize. Any of our PA clan grab it?

Oh he knows that well! The more folks get to see and touch Kevin's work, the higher the bids will go. Its amazing stuff, Im proud to carry 2 of his knives on every hunt I take.

It was a great shoot as always. Always a good group of folks to BS and shoot with and although I didn't get under the bow making tent but to stuff my face it looked to be busy. Can't wait till next year.

And yeah, Drew stole that knife at $55... sneaky little bastard.  >:D

Oh danny boy, if you WANT something on a silent auction ya have to really bid not play with piddly little $2 increases - so next time go big or go home.

That knife and sheath was worth way more - but this boy only had $60 of play money in his wallet.  >:D
