;D Ive started my first bow. It's a Osage stave and snakey. I plan to add some snake skin to the bow if all goes well. It also has a small crack but it looks like it will go away. I plan to keep you posted if at all possible.
-
Please do and with pic;s ;). I've got a good snakey one curing, something I haven't done yet either :).
-
Yep, lookin forward to this..been saving this piece till he was ready to build one. It will be touch and go on the crack tho....its wind shear and its in a bad spot, but I think knapper can handle it....Dad ::)
-
OK, now that we got you in the right place, we want pics! ;) Looking forward. Pat
-
Dang BE CAREFULL, Knowing who your dad is it will be a miracle if you don't break it, its only Osage, right koan. ;D And don't cut your hand doing it either. ;D Boy paybacks for all those yew comments are fun aren't they Brian. ;D
Knapperderg, we believe you can do it, now lets see some pictures. Justin
-
Love to see some pictures,I love snaky Osage. :)

Hope to come by and check it out,in the mean time keep after it and have fun with it. Auggie.
-
We gotta get Auggie over hear with his daughters new fangled camera... ;)...Brian
-
I finally got that monsterous crack super glued and now I play the waiting game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:D
-
Too cold in the shop...cant make him stay out there to work on it. Brrrr....Brian
-
I've got a recurve going right now with a sizable crack in the middle of one limb. Maybe we could share our experiences on this one. Don't have a picture right now but won't take long..
-
Paul the crack on knappers stave starts bout 6" from the tip and they are already purty narrow, bout 5/8". I think it will come out but will prolly have to settle for a 35-40 lb. bow. He was hopin for closer to 50 lbs. Good luck with yours....Brian

Might consider cutting the tips down some, to increase the bow weight.
-
Greg, its already purty short...I think 55", so we are kinda pushin it already. Might have to be a bend in the handle deal, we will see.....Brian
-
Thanks Brian - I just hope she don't blow ;D. I was trying to remove some propeller from that limb (which I did) but during the process something popped and voila there was the crack :'(. It's about ten iches long and doesn't run out anywhere - I've filled it with super glue and it seems to be holding. Am going to back with sinew, hope that's enough. If not I've gained a lot of experience nonetheless..
-
Paul, sounds like where its at you prolly be alright....knappers runs out. :o...we will see I guess....Brian
-
The good news is Im scrapin it down but that crack may not come out and I think I found another one in the middle. All of them have super glued before but I have that weird feeling in my stomach that it will blow apart on the tillering stage. Sorry about not having any pics, I don't have a digital Camera yet. Any more tips are in a wanting (please ???).
Kamron (Derg) ;D

long string tillering :-\ (long part)
-
This thing is really curvy towards one tip( string actually goes outside the bow) and the string wants to shift to that side. Ive helped Kam straightin it and I think we have gone as far as the bow will let us. Tips and handle line up, but it still wants to shift under a load....any advice???.....Brian
-
Well its back on the caul..tips and handle didnt want to stay lined up, we'll try again 2maro....Brian
-
Pretty piece of wood, certainly worth the effort. Get that sucker really hot, it'll do what you want eventually. Heck lay it outside, it was 104F today that oughta make it like a noodle.
-
Gee thanks ::)
-
Well we didnt quite get it all...so back on the caul it went. :-[ Kam is gettin anxious so he will maybe calm down a little why we wait for it to cool ;D lol.....Brian
-
got her lined up it looks freakin' sweet :o

Looking good,so far.Right limb looks a little stiff mid limb. :) May just be the picture looks like it is at a bit of an angle.
Pappy
-
Oh, yeah. That's starting to look like a bow-looks like you've got it playing by your rules now. :)
-
Pappy, I think your right on with your call. I have a tendency to make mine bend too much right out of the fades and then end up with a little set so I been makin Kamron work more from mid limb to tips. Now I think we are ready to get it bendin more in the fades to mid limb??? The tips are really snaky and narrow( carvin out the wind shear) so I dont think we want to put too much stress on them..any advice welcomed....Brian (dad)
-
I try to save the first 3 or 4 inches out of the fads and the last 6 inches or so on the tips
till last.If fact I leave the tips pretty stiff. You will get it whip tillered if you get the tip weak
and it always wants to bend in the fads because that is the hinge point on the limb ,so I am careful and get them bending last when all I am doing id reducing weight. If it takes a little set at the fads it will show a lot of follow at the tips. :)
Pappy
-
Pappy, we put it back on tiller tree and I think it was the angle of the pic cuz it aint stiff lookin on that right limb now ;). We got it at 42# @ 20" with the short string and its still bouncin back to good reflex unstrung. Again were aimin for 45# @ 25" so we are gettin close! :o This bow is just shy of 56" with a 4" handle so we might have to put a little whip in the tips...we shall soon see :D....Oh ya, we got some shorty rattlemouthcottonmocosin skins from Pine Hollow to put on it when Kams done with the tillerin....Brian
-
Well fellers she didnt blow on me! 25"@47' with the room for sanding left. All that is left to do is the snake skin backing and the tips. What I plan to do with the tips is a 2 layer. The first layer deer antler and the second layer, black cow horn. New pics are added below of course. :o :o :o :o
P.S.
To Oldbow please don't post my BOM because it isnt truly finished yet.
Thank You,
Kamron

Man this kid is excited!!! Wish I could have learned how to do this @ 16, lol ... It took a little set but it shoots really sweet. Kamron wants to make it a bulbeous handle, so I geuss I better learn how to do that ;).....Brian
-
Brian, Kamron ya'll did a super job on that bow. ;D Can't wait to see it finished! Shoot it a bunch before you seal 'er up... tiller can change a bit from it settlin in while shootin.
Chris
-
Thats good advice Chris, might talk him in to flippin the tips abit to...never no when to quit ;D ;D....Brian

Sometimes, I miss these build-alongs. You might give me a heads up when its finished. Looks like a great one for BOM, though. - OldBow
-
No Problem!
-
The tips are on but that part really sucked. We had to use the tape method beside of the slant by the tips, black cow horn on the top and deer antler under it. I think the "Ole Man" and I are going to make a string as well.
Kamron(derg)
-
The tips are on looking good so far. soon we start the snake skins.

-
Whoowee!! Its been touch and go several times but I think were good now...this thing really flings an arrow and is so quite it amazed me....how come when I help someone else make a bow they always come out better than mine? ;D.....Brian(Dad)

-
:o :o :o
It's finished. The tips come out the way I wanted. Cow horn over deer antler. The handle was a braided fishing line (black). It also has a leather arrow rest. Snake Skin is daimond rattlesnake. 45#@25" the bow is 1 1/16 wide tapering to 3/8 tips and is 55" long. Boulbes handle. I made my first stirng with silencers the colors are red black gold and a black serving. sorry for the fuzzy pics on the tips.

I named it 'MOSES'
-
Very nice bow Kam. You did a fine job with it; from tiller to the finishing touches. Maybe you can give your Dad a few pointers. ;D Pat
-
:P Gee thanks Pat...This bow came out really great, wish we could have got better pics for ya'll. You can see in the side profile where this bow had wind shear that healed over years before...made us a little nerveous durin tiller and shoot in, but it survived. This bow has above average speed for its draw weight...think we might hafta chrono this one just to see :D. Kam did a great job, I would show him how then he would take over and NO power tools were used at all....Not bad for a stick I was carryin to the burn pile then changed my mind ;).....Brian (Dad)
-
Correction...he did use the bandsaw to cut the horn and antler out(drawknife and hatchet dont work good for that) ;D.....Brian
-
Outstanding bow. I really like the limb tips.
-
That is a fine looking bow. Can't see anything that ain't quality.Good work ! Now is that a huntin' bow ?........Frank
-
This bow was very much worth the wait. We'll look at again tomorrow for Sept Self Bow of the Month. Congratulations.
-
Very nicely done Kam :) Now ya have to start on your Christmas Trade present ;)
-
Very slick looking bow well done.Ronnie
-
Yep Frank, its a huntin bow. Gonna try and get some trade points on some of his arrows tonight. ;) Kams @ school (Dads playin hooky) so I will let him know ya'll like his bow, thanks for the compliments.....Brian
-
Good job little Derg! It looks great and I was truly surprized how quick it shoots an arrow. ;D
-
I'm likin' the looks of that bow. The youngster has reason to be excited (and Proud) - you too!
-
Thanks for all the replies. Yes I might use it for some hunting but it aint gonna be a display peice.
-
Great story and great bow.Good job.I like everything about it.It looks like a perfect huntin' bow,now get to the woods!! God Bless
-
You're not the kid that i met at mojam about two years ago.........ended up with that bambooed sillystick that would serve better as a club?
Only a couple of things i can say. First, sorry about that. :) Second..........dang dang dang. 55", 45 lbs @ 25" and snaky. I dont think i could do that on my best day. No, i like power tools. I know i cant do that. Very nice job ;D
-
Very nicely done,That is a great looking bow. :)
Pappy

-
