Alright guys, you all know the drill. This is where you post about whatever you're working on for you trade recipient. Just be sure to leave out who that recipient is. That is of course unless its me  >:D ;) ;)

Knife making begins tomorrow. I would love to give some nice points, but I would need about 200# of stone. Maybe a wood harvest. Then some sewing.  >:D Good thing I like sewing!

So hopefully this little five curve gets it done. Adding overlays and then sinewing. I know I don't have to in that order but I want a little more meat for the string when I reverse brace. Plan on attempting to make a set of 3 arrows as well. Nothing too fancy. Just the profile for now

I would take about anything that someone made me. I don't think I would enjoy a turd  :o. As far as bows go, I can see giving a stave, I would love a stave if I was short on wood. I would never turn down Osage. I am currently sitting on 3 boards, a juniper stave, and a hole in the limb Osage. Knives are just fun. I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I did. Now I have to make a sheath.

Im thinking a quiver... im in the process of brain tanning a deer hide right now. I hope it comes out ok. I hope my recipient could use a quiver... hes kinda a knife guy from what I gather.... but im not so good at knives, especially compared to him. It will be a quiver that can be carried as a back or side depending on how he wants it t be carried. Also for target shooting it has a side stake that jams into the ground to hold the entire thing straight up so you can just grab the arrows with out any awkwardness.

I have tied some flies that should work in my guys local waters. Working on a knife(s) because I wanted to be like all the other kids! A few raw materials for knife and bow building and maybe a home made set of arrow heads... still room in the box?! Ok, some feathers, some knapping material, a knapping tool or two... Bone?... yeah now some bone
Title: Re: 2014 Christmas Trade Works in Progress.
Post by: J05H on September 12, 2014, 04:44:45 pm
Well I guess since everyone else is making knives.....   Lol. I was actually thinking of making a knife myself. I have one started. I'll post a pic of it when I get a chance.

To whoever got my name, I'll be happy with whatever you send. A knife, a tomahawk, a bow, a quiver,  some arrows, raw materials, or anything else you might want to send. I'm not picky. I mostly make bows and an occasional knife. I haven't made any arrows yet, but I will one of these days.

Winning lottery ticket?

Is that considered a natural resource ?
Title: Re: 2014 Christmas Trade Works in Progress.
Post by: wildman on September 14, 2014, 12:04:42 am
Well , I'm gonna go against the grain. I can turn out a pretty decent knife , but I have a piece of two year old osage that keeps talking to me. I also am thinking some arrows like the one I gave Pat B in the arrow trade. Althogh my guy is an osage bow builder so maybe a nice belt hawk if I break the stick.

I started this one out with a piece of sycamore.

(http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp161/madcrow_2008/Carving/CAM00802_zpsqguogl7s.jpg) (http://s408.photobucket.com/user/madcrow_2008/media/Carving/CAM00802_zpsqguogl7s.jpg.html)

Then, well, I made some progress.

(http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp161/madcrow_2008/Carving/CAM00806_zpsxv8xk8zq.jpg) (http://s408.photobucket.com/user/madcrow_2008/media/Carving/CAM00806_zpsxv8xk8zq.jpg.html)

Then I made a little more progress.

(http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp161/madcrow_2008/Carving/CAM00805_zpsb93vvmxv.jpg) (http://s408.photobucket.com/user/madcrow_2008/media/Carving/CAM00805_zpsb93vvmxv.jpg.html)

Then a little more, a third face on the back side of the stick.  I haven't figured out what he will be, but I am thinking maybe a mountain man.

(http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp161/madcrow_2008/Carving/CAM00803_zpsla8ounon.jpg) (http://s408.photobucket.com/user/madcrow_2008/media/Carving/CAM00803_zpsla8ounon.jpg.html)

Front side.  In the top wil be a ball that will rattle around some while the person is walking, in case he is hiking in bear country.

I have the hair cut in on two of the wood spirits and started the mountain man below them.  I also decided to try a basket weave on the back to fill in the void and give some texture for grip.

These are some of my rabbits I butchered last year, Also I figured everybody needs a squirrel cooker, this one is just the right size for a backpack. It finally got sort of cool so I could fire up the forge!  Hope you like them Mr Whatshisname  ;D

I've got all the stuff together for my knife including some leather for a sheath and some beautiful scales sent to me by NeolithicMan. I've decided that I'm not quite happy with the taper, and it could use a heat treating. Right now I'm trying to put together a charcoal forge to heat it in.

Josh, to temper my friend uses a toaster oven. 400 degrees for like 2 hrs. If that's what u mean by treat it
Title: Re: 2014 Christmas Trade Works in Progress.
Post by: J05H on October 02, 2014, 03:11:01 pm
That's part of it Bruce, but I need to anneal it so I can drill the holes and do a bit more stock removal. Then I'll harden and temper it. That means I need to heat it to critical temp ( about 1500 degrees ) a few times and that's where the forge comes in. I want make it the best I possibly can, so I'm learning all I can.

Post by: Blaflair2 on October 02, 2014, 03:44:49 pm
I thought ya already had it made. Get a big magnet. Heat it till it's non magnetic and that's the temp ya want.

Post by: J05H on October 02, 2014, 05:47:11 pm
Yeah, I guess made it look that way. I didn't mean too. I did everything so far with a bench grinder and I'm sure I probably ruined the original file heat treat in the process so I'm gonna re-do it just to be safe.

Since my guy lives a little North of me,I know it gets cold there,So I made a pair of Rabbit skin mittens. These are some of my rabbits I butchered last year, Also I figured everybody needs a squirrel cooker, this one is just the right size for a backpack. It finally got sort of cool so I could fire up the forge!  Hope you like them Mr Whatshisname  ;D

Got my Christmas Trade item finished today. It's a GFA style side quiver I made from old Selway bow quiver. The hood and arrow grip were added to an ash board with diamondback cover and then added an adjustable leather shoulder strap.
This is my favorite style hunting quiver. It holds the arrows securely, quietly and safely and can be carried on your side or slung back behind to get it out of the way.
I'm also throwing in 3 hill cane arrows with field points, self nocks and turkey wing feather fletch.

My picture posting ability is pretty much non existent at the moment.  But, I have made a prototype quiver for my guy. Its just a test as it was a first, ill be making him a better one than this. Its body is a rain stick cactus ive hollowed out with a cane stick down the side to hold the deer skin egg tan shoulder strap. The cane stick is long and stout enough to jam into the ground so as to hold the quiver up on its own. There will be stitch work leather around the base and a bow sock attatched to the bamboo stake so you can store the bow and arrows together when not being used. It can also all be carried on your back. It will be a top draw quiver. If I have time I may make him a bow for it as well. We will see, gonna be getting back In touch with nature allot here real soon. Thinking about keeping a journal about it, if anyone is interested,  spending fall living in the woods roughing it with my wife and son. They are both excited. If anyone is interested lemme know, ill start a thread, camp life and cooking, daily adventures.

Thanks fellas! I do sell a few from time to time. Mostly in the spring.

JW, I do have some beeswax, haven't got around to using any of it yet. I wonder about using it as a finish. Maybe a crazy question here, but what about people who are bee allergic? Just curious.

Trapper Rob, the woods in the pic are red cedar, ambrosia, and curly maple, and one I don't remember. But I'll use just about any wood I can get for calls.

The bee allergy involves the venom, wax is secreted in a bunch of modified sweat glands on other parts of the bee. I have never heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to beeswax.

Full tang, 10" overall,6 1/4" boning blade
Full tang, 7" overall, 3 1/2" paring blade

I'm sure there are some who could give a better answer than I, but here goes:  In my opinion, Its about community, its about pushing ourselves to expand our skills, and its about giving. Its us attempting to create something to the best of our ability and then sending it along to another member of our community.

Hopefully that answers your questions :)

I just finished a blanket and canvas hand sewn sleeping bag for a six foot long snake. Alternatively, could be used as a bow sock, you know, if he is into that.  I also finished a nice bow rack for the wall.  I put something in a jar, too.  But the big piece has been sawn out but not finished.  Last night for some reason I dreamt of making that certain object, but my imagination went wild and included moving parts.  Normally, anything I dream is just too flipping wierd for words, but this time it was pure genius.  It adds a degree of complexity to the build...but it will work, I just know it will work!  Oh, this is getting good!

When I ship this box, there will be a plethora of goodies!

Question for y'all.

My gift was going to be a set of pants for a 12 inch Old Hickory butcher knife.
Is that to much knife for woods work?

Leave it big and mean or cut it down and make a spar point and mini Skinner set?

12 inches is good with me  >:D, but more stuff is always good. I need to make a few more things, and figure how to ship some stuff to avoid breakage. Hope someone is ready for a heavy package .

I butcher my own deer, but im not sure what a 12 inch knife would be like. I use a 7" blade because that what I have. Id try to balance it for sure, dont wanna buther a whole deer with an unbalanced blade.... that would get very tiresome.

Maple walnut hickory, if ya go to cbgitty.com they sell everything and you can see what materials they are useung and what parts you need, you can't get strings any cheaper than what they sell, a simple diddly bow guitar would be cool for anyone as they are easy to learn to play with one string

I haven't posted an update for awhile so here is what I have been working on.  I have some arrows finished and need to prepare fletchings for the rest.  Fletchings are split and ground, they still need to be chopped and attached. I finished tillering a tricky piece of black walnut late last night (thanks to a tillering gizmo).  It came out right at desired weight. I think I am a fan of Black Walnut. I will finish sanding and shooting in today.

I had been working on a piece of ironwood and with a slip of a draw knife I went from a 55 pound bow to a 30 pound bow.  That is set aside to finish later for my son.  I have some other goodies ready to go along. I hope to be able to ship before Christmas but I most likely won't be ready by the 15th.

I really wanted to make some kind of tool or weapon for my dude, but had 4 bow sets to get done for Xmas. Weak excuse I know, and I'm sorry. I'll make it up to whoever I get in this years  bow trade.  I've been throwing some homemade things in a box, jams, candles, soaps, and will be sending him one of my nicest yew staves. Would of loved to make one for him, but he has made some nice bows himself, and surely this will be another. Heading to the post office this afternoon.

Yeah, the Post Office is really down on shipping anything in a jar.  I understand that, things break, packages leak, and that is not good for other people's mail.  And all because someone ain't got the good sense God gave a goose to pack the jar/bottle such that rough handling won't break it.

As some folks here may attest, I have shipped glass jars of honey.  I usually wrap the jar in several layers of plastic bag.  Then the jar is slid into a box that has room on all four sides. I then prop the jar with wedges of styrofoam so that it is away from the cardboard on all sides, and I seal up the box.  Last step, I poke a hole in the side of the box, stuff in a nozzle from a can of Great Stuff Foam Insulation and pull the trigger!!!  Harder than heck to get the honey out when it arrives, but so far none of the jars have broken either!!!

Sorry I have been so absent for a while, deer season bug bit me bad, reeeeeal BAD this year. I only missed 5 days of hunting and I still have a january DMFA season coming up! I had some set backs in the work shop, had budmenchaca make me a SAWEEEEEEET blade from red fleck obsidian. I attached it to an antler handle, started cleaning it up and snap... I just about burned my wood shop when I saw the gorgeous blade in two... I cleaned up the smaller half and attached it to a new antler, should be a fine knife by tomorrow evening. Shipping with a few other goodies this weekend hopefully.

Oh no!  We have reached the shipping date!!!  AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!  I am not ready to ship!

Ok, just a couple little thingys to do and I will be.  One of those thingy's will be the actual construction of the cardboard box to put the gifts into for shipping.  This means I gotta go scavange a nice piece of quality cardboard.

Just in case I do not please my recipient, I promise to ship whatever I receive if you are not satisfied with what you get.

My guy isnt getting what I wanted to make him, didnt have the money to invest in equipment,  but he is getting a decent amount of raw carbon steel, perhaps some Damascus,  and some opals to do inlays with and maybe a quiver if I can get one together I like enough to ship. The last quiver split on me. Not happy about that, its made of dried hollowed out cactus.

I just got everything together and boxed up and realized I forgot something. So Out it all came, added the missing Item and back in the box. I made a rawhide and bone quiver, and it didn't turn out to the level that my victim deserved. So I stuck with the knife I made, along with a scraper, and some other goodies. Heading East tomorrow. Should be there by the 22nd. Here is a photo of the goodies, along with a personal touch not pictured.

Well Folks -

Had a run in with Mr Murphy the other day. He wrote Murphy's Law! Something in my well system is not working. Have not had water for two days. Of course it is right before christmas and right as I am trying to get my gift finished up.

To whom it may concern,
Your gift may not go out till after the first of the new year, but you will get it before the 15th of January..... pending nothing else goes wrong.

Hopefully I will find an easy resolution and won't have to pull my pump.

Got my shipping box half built today...fully intended to get it out today so I could open my gift tonite.  But then a friend called, she had slipped and fallen.  She struck her head and was bleeding badly.  Got her to the hospital and fixed up with a butterfly bandage (you know head wounds, bleed like mad), and spent part of the day looking for her dog that had ran off when she fell.

Found the dog, she's ok, and I'm at work wishing customers a Merry Christmas. Will Ship on Friday...if the post office doesn't burn down!

This will be heading out friday.  I hope my victim likes it.  Three wood spirits, with a basket weave pattern filling in between them.

Here is the top. it has a wooden ball in it that rattles when it is moved.

This is the top and middle faces with the hair and beard intertwined.

I have had many things keeping me busy this fall and winter. I am afraid my guy is getting raw materials for his box, despite all my fun plans for things to make. Hopefully he will like what he gets. Sending some steel for knife stock including files and bar stock of 5160, gonna send a few bits of wood for shingles, a billet of cable damascus, as well as some opals and turquoise for inlays or sheaths, etc.. hope he likes it all and isnt too upset with raw materials.

I had my basket making apprenticeship lesson today from 9-5, and when I got home I just kept weaving until my Present was done.

It's got a pine liner to protect the splints, but is otherwise 100% Vermont grown black ash, hand processed and woven.

Belt loops took a little puzzling over, but I got them on there solid.

And a detail on the Cowiss (embellishment)

Auggie sent me some antler buttons, a knapped point, some handmade fishing lures (of a design I have found to work very well on rainbow trout, I might add), a handmade knife that I suspect was once a circular saw blade and a deer antler, and an amazing rack for not only that knife but for other knives to be displayed on, and an antler piece with a leather loop thru it and no explanation of what it is for, but I figure it would work as a deer drag!

I flat made out like a bandito on this trade!  Thanks Augster!  Photos coming!

Seems I have been had, though not terribly.  The turquoise I was going to add to my gift box, is fake. I saw a pice on edge that had been chipped.  Its white in color. Dyed howlite is what it is called. Just hope the fellow who gave it to me didnt pay much for it. Now im not sure, would anybody care if they recieved imitation turquoise?  The opals however are real and will be sent soon with the rest of the box.

Despite being given 30 days to move on Dec 5th, I managed to get my gift to a point where I could ship it and not be ashamed, lol.

It went out in the mail today. I did want to put more work and time into it, but I had to dismantle and move my shop over the last few weeks, and no telling how long before I can put it all back together. Anyway I have your phone number whoever you are and once I see it is delivered I plan to give you a call. Hope you like it as much as I enjoyed making it and getting it all together.

Well, I sent mine out today. It should be there wednesday or thursday. I ended up sending a deer grunt call, a few arrow, some pine pitch glue, sinew, and a christmas ornament. My victim is a knapper, so I sent the arrows with no points. I'm sure he has some points laying around waiting for some shafts. Hope he likes it all.

A lot of you on the list have posted things like "almost ready", or "going out tomorrow" but haven't confirmed that you've shipped. If your name is on the list and you have already shipped please let either Bruce or me know so we can update the list.

If you haven't shipped, there are still 9 days left till the deadline. When you do ship, please let one of us know.

We had problems with a @#$% Land Lord and I would worry about it being "lost". I will PM it to J05H as well so hopefully it can be updated before shipping.

Thanks guys.

mine went in the mail yesterday afternoon, in the box is a knife forged from an old trap spring, a pair of pliers forged from an old dump rake tooth, a small utility type blade also forged from a dump rake tooth, some turkey and goose feathers, some antler buttons and a bunch of smaller chunks of wood (bacote, quilted maple, elm burl, curly maple) for tip overlays and such.

I shipped my trade package today to my victim. Poor guy!
My time was limited to make things but I managed a fire bow set and some knapped stone items, then I threw in some raw materials. Cane shafts, feathers, and sinew for error makin and a few pieces of hardwood for whatever with one being a highly figured piece of sweet gum that should make some killer knife scales. Long node bamboo and large cane pieces that would make a some flutes too.
Sorry I can't post pics cause my puter went down back before Christmas and I'm operating on a borrowed I pad that I ain't too good with. Hopefully my guy can take up my slack and post a pic or two for me, and I don't know what I'm gonna do to post pics when I receive a package, but hopefully I can con someone into helping me do it. I'll figure something out.

Shipped mine almost a month ago but have not heard from the recipient and can't find the tracking number to see if it was received.

Now you have every one who hasnt recieved worried. I have had stuff stolen from me here before.

No need to worry. The gift was received, and all is well.

Ok everyone, the shipping deadline has officially passed. I've contacted everyone who hasn't shipped yet and all but one or two will be shipping tomorrow. I will continue to update the list I made a few posts back until everyone has shipped. Otherwise, I think this thread has run its course. I hope everyone had a great time with this trade, and I hope to see everyone's gifts over in the Trade Item Received thread.

Thanks for running a great trade.

Thanks, too, to everyone that pitched in and built the anticipation, as well as the wonderful payoffs at the end!
