Some months ago a friend asked wether I would like to have a branch of a juniper which he had to cut away as it was broken down by a storm. And of corse I did. He brought a piece, kinda a quarter of a stave with that broken storm violation on one end. The sap was creamy, the heart wood light brown. I laid it in a corner of my shop to let it season. Some weeks ago it came in my mind again and I examined the piece, thought it looks a lot like ERC. But that color and it was grown in Germany
. I made a fresh cut with my hacksaw and saw the purple color ERC indeed, German ERC. Unbelievable, it grows here.
Here is the stave, about 40 total, last 12 not usable (broken end)

I didn't know what to do with that weird piece so I bandsawed it in slats about ½ thick, kinda quartersawn.

This is what I got, slats or boards with sap on one half side and heartwood on the other. Beautiful wood with hundreds of pin knots and some larger ones.

Looking at that slats with that nice colors, I decided to combine it opposing
(http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh576/orangesimson/1409%20boo%20backed%20erc%20with%20diagonal%20handle/P1020459_zps3580fa93.jpg)

I have bought some boo slats, this should became a backing for my two slats, here is the 'splice'. I cut away the sap in the handle area in a rectangular shape.
My plan was a diagonal handle, it should look like the heartwood turns over to the other side. Here is the idea marked easily with a 1 wide masking tape
(http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh576/orangesimson/1409%20boo%20backed%20erc%20with%20diagonal%20handle/P1020463_zpsd77cfda4.jpg)
Some curves for a funky transition

Before cutting out, the back was strengthened with two slats of flooring boo, all glued together with TB 3
(http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh576/orangesimson/1409%20boo%20backed%20erc%20with%20diagonal%20handle/P1020464_zps9c9dd02f.jpg)
And rasped down for a smooth transition

He's strengthened the back and may well glue a riser block onto the belly too, he know what he's doing so it should be fine....

Can't wait to see this one Simson! Very creative!!

Fancy indeed. Cool project Simon, I'll be watching.

Simon you're posts never disappoint....can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Weylin I like to do awide variaty of bow designs and esp. like to do experiments. some come out good, some not.
but always lots to learn and much fun to work on

Yeah, what brother Del said! The layer of the ERC slats is only stressed by compression, the tension is on the backing, the boo flooring slats (power lams) will work for stabilisation.
The bow is ready, just needs some finishing work ( couple of oil coats) and about 50 or 60 shots are done -- still holds fine.
More than likely a hybrid cultivar of Juniper than true ERC but it's basically the same wood.
Yes Pat, for sure - ERC is not a native (word?) tree in Germany
afraid the boo will over power the erc...interesting splice ...awaiting finished product...gut
Yes, I had the same thoughts. I have trapped the backing heavily and the next 500 shots will show wether it is a chrysal candidate or not. But I'm optimistic , I have a good feel
All: many thanks for your comments and your believe in me

Next steps:
(no pics, sorry all deleted by accident)
The whole thing turned out a bit short with the stiff handle, I tried to lengthen the bow with the backing and additional underlay. Both, the backing and the underlays were steam bent, they should work as stiff levers of a mild static. My thought was very light boo levers to save mass on the outer limbs. The backing was glued on with a mild deflex.
The handle got an extra piece of ERC, glued down in the diagonal position of the handle.
Some tiny horn nocks were added with super glue.
String bridges are made also out of horn. I have small plates, about ⅛ thick, for every lever two of them were heated, bent and glued on with super glue.
The limbs got a 5 edge profile, heavily trapped on the back (45°) and a ridge bellyside. It tapers in the outer limbs into a square profile (before bridge), then into high trapezoid (levers).
The exotic handle position and that soft wood invited me to do some fancy carving on that piece. I tried to balance it out symmetrically, or better opposing.
The arrow pass is made out of brass sheet, curved horizontally and vertically. It took a time to hammer it out matching the bow's curves.
All the work is done with handtools (exc. Bandsaw), flatteneing boo and slats done with a rasp. Yes, I know the glue lines are not the best.
This bow is made out of 15 components:
3 pieces ERC (2x slats, 1x handle glue up)
5 pieces boo (1x backing, 2x powerlam, 2x tip overlay)
6 pieces horn (2x tip overlay, 2x2 lams string bridges)
1 piece of brass sheet (arrow pass)
This bow is very snappy with a good load already at brace. It looks a bit fancy, but was really fun to carve out.
length ntn 60
mass: 360 grams = 12,7 oz

I usually don't name my bows, this one of the few were I did.

Simi. There could never be to many photos in one of your posts! Thanks for taking the time to post them. Your bows are truly amazing... simple form and function becomes artistic expression. It's so very pleasing to the eyes! Well done sir.

It's hard to believe you wound up with that piece of art from the piece of wood you started with! Amazing!
-
That thing is obscenely beautiful. Can't get over the character and curves of that handle.
-
Wow, incredible
-
What can I say?...wickedly scary bow:-)
Cheers
-
Wooh, just came back from work. That is what I call response ;D ;D ;D
Thanks everybody foe that nice compliments! I'm happy of everybody's comment!
This is very nice wood with pretty curves on it.
But to be honest, it wasn't that hard to make. The biggest deal was doing all the planing with the rasp only, I have no power jointer or router.
The limited ressources showed the way to the design choice.
I'm currently working on some character osage statics, no wowsers, but to balance the taves out is much more complicated than this project.

Dude that is the prettiest coolest most funky bow I've seen.

That is a stunner. That cedar looks absolutely gorgeous on the belly. Thanks for walking us through your vision. Very cool seeing it come alive. I especially like seeing your experience with the hollow limb bows coming through in your carving of the fades. Spectacular bow! 8)
-
WHAT?
When I saw that checked old piece of wood, I was thinking, maybe you'd make a cool shelf or book end or friggin chop sticks or something....
not a stunner of a bow. But you did.
Wow.
Gabe
-
i always enjoy seeing your bows. this is no exception! your workmanship is outstanding.

I have lurked on this site for some time now, eventually signing up as to access the archives. I haven't posted until now because I've had nothing to contribute nor have I had a question that I could not find an answer to by searching. While I have seen creations that have blown me away or inspired me, they have all be old posts that are no longer active. This however, compels me.
Simon, your bow is wicked-sexy. From her slender limbs with flawless over and under lays to the geometrically radical handle design that blends both superior form and function, sensuality and performance.(just realized this is reading Like a BMW advertisement...Bavaria, what can one say?) This bow has the look of a Bad Girl in an evening gown or what the boys would call a "Naughty Hottie"...Indeed a stunning creation.
-
Very creative, inspiring, and well executed 8)
-
WOw I continue to be amazed by your experiments Simson, top notch bow
-
Hi Simon,
This has got to be one of the most unique bows I've seen and extremely well done.
Cheers, Deerslayer.
-
Thanks again guys for that very nice compliments :)
-
Wow! You must have been experienced with purple haze to come up with these designs, and then pull the magic out of the hat to make it all work, and look flawless. I am always amazed at your work, and the way you think out of the box. Outstanding, and absolutely beautiful!! Das iss nicht goot! Das iss Vundabar!! You are an amazing mechanical Artist!

well, many pics, I know. I apologize if you got tired
Hi Simon. I will be never tired of your bows and pics. The more the better. You are great teacher and inspiration. Albert
-
I rekon if I filled a bag with the wood chippings and sawdust from under my bench you would still be able to make a beautiful bow from it.
Excellent as always.
-
Fantastic bow. One of the most stunning bows i've ever seen. Top of the line. :D
-
Beautiful , imaginative and a work of art! There is no doubt that after posting this build it will inspire others to push limits of what can be done with wood, skill and imagination.
Well done sir!
-
simply WOW

-
Oh my... I am so not worthy of even seeing this... I feel now but only an inept carver of wood.
I almost felt a little dirty clicking through the pictures. :)
wow.
Beautiful.
-
I cannot see the pictures
-
All the pictures are gone!
-
Yeah, pics are gone. They got too much attention so photobucket wants money. Simson (and everyone else) should try uploading at www.imgur.com , never had any problems there. It's a shame too cause I just started looking at all his stuff and I was learning a ton!
-
Sorry folks, I've noticed the pics in my posts are gone again.
Photobucket says I've hit my bandwidth limits and I have to pay money. No problem with the few bucks, but couldn't manage it.
I'm no IT prof. If I understood it right the pics should reappear at November 4. or 5. So you have to be patient, really sorry for that.
Any tips for me, or other hosting sites to try?

This shows you how to re-size using Microsoft Paint. You should use 640 pixels as your largest dimension.

Masterful and intricate piecing and setting of the elaboration's parts, excellent choice and alternation of lively colours, incredible edgy asymmetrical carving of the handle, minutious care for the details and the finish... one of the best I've seen so far
-
Brilliant and ingenious build...Absolutely beautiful :o

Simon. I'm am so glad someone brought this back to the front page as I missed it the first time around. I don't know what to say other than I am stunned. How you came up this idea is beyond me but Bravo my friend Bravo. The ERC is stunning isn't it. You have just set the bar waaaaay up there. Thanks for contributing. We all benefit greatly from seeing this type of work. Danny

Mr. Simson, no joke, this is the coolest looking bow I've ever seen. You're inhuman.
Sincerely,
-Nick
-
Thats the sickest bow I have ever seen! Seriously...wow...
-
I missed this one the first time around too. Amazing. My favorite ever!
-
I missed this post first go around to.. Fancy yes, stylish swanky.
-
Wow, that is one stunning bow... Amazing design, real eye-candy.
As for the species: eastern red cedar, aka ERC, is Juniperus virginiana. Pretty common as an ornamental conifer in Europe (there are two in my parent's garden).
A rather common species in N-Europe and Canada is Juniper communis, the common juniper, whose berries are still used to flavor gin. This species doesn't have red heartwood, so it seems you do have ERC.
All true Junipers (Juniperus species) seem to be excellent in compression and make good (backed) bows. Maybe your next Juniper could be a native one.
-
I missed it the first time around as well; Stunning design and flawless execution. Kudos and a tip of the old ball cap to your vision and ability with a very challenging species of wood.
-
I went searching for this bow not long ago and couldnt find it. Thanks for bringing it back to the top.
-
Who the hell brought this old post back again? ;) ;) ;) ;)
Thanks again folks, of course I appriciate all your comments.

Joachim where are you located?
Oh, and I've worked already with Juniperus, also currently one on the bench (selfbow).

Yeah those are some funky bows you made with juniper, pushing the boundaries of what we (or at least I) thought was possible.
I'm in Belgium just 50 km east from Brussels.
-
This is one of the most amazing bows I have seen. Incredible attention to detail. Great job sir.
-
That is one slick bow!!! Great job
-
Best curves I've seen since Kate Upton! ;)
-
I went back to this thread after reading the current thread on splicing levers. My jaw dropped again. Has to be the most beautiful, awe inspiring bow I've ever seen.
It's like hearing Mozart (or Jimi Hendrix) for the first time. :)

Holy cow, that thing is gorgeous.
-
Wow Simon! Absolutely stunning, as usual.
-
Stunningly sexy bow! I always look forward to your bows and this one is off the chart!
amazing.
-
Thanks again Gentlemen for the nice compliments, I really appreciate it
-
Wow, honestly I didn't thing that was gonna work, besides the bamboo overpowering the erc I figured that the heartwood and sapwood would bend differently enough to cause some major twisting issues. But you made er work! Looks awesome, how does it shoot? I imagine it's pretty snappy!
-
What is the limb width and how is this bow holding up?
-
WOW!!!!Can't believe I did'nt see this. What a person can do with the least amount of material is unreal if he uses his imagination. If that does'nt bring a bowyer out of his chair nothing does.Fantastic idea and design.Congradulations on your bow Simson!!!!!!!!
