This bow came to be made all because a good friend of mine said hackberry wont make an ELB in another thread >:D ...to see the friendly discussion go here
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,48275.0.html
So this came out adhering to the 5/8's rule, and that's all that matters to me to prove it can make an ELB.....76"ntn..its 1 1/4" wide by almost 1" thick at the handle...its been drawn and shot out to 30" where I reckon its 55-56lbs...osage tip overlays...hemp wrapped handle over a cork built up bulbous shape with a shelf glued on...20 ounces mass...and I tried to give it a yewish look with dye...its not quite as red as it is in the pics in person, and im not quite sure what to think of it yet :-\ :D

Looks very nice!cool finish!
-
Very nice Chris. I never doubt your tenacity when it comes to bows, no matter what wood. ;)
-
Pretty slick build Chris, excellent tiller too.
-
Very nice tiller. Did you put the reflex in it, or did mother nature?
-
Sweet!
-
Even held reflex I think that says it all
-
Boy...you've been into the long sticks lately.
The knot from the back looks like a belly button ;D ;D
Nice looking bow

look's good bad chris, but I wonder is this an exceptional piece of hackberry, I've only built one hackberry but I don't think it would have made an elb, as a flatbow it was thick
-

that would be mother nature doing her thing ;) ..I didn't induce anymore than what it already had to start with...which was 4",and 2 hours after unstringing tonight its sitting at 2 3/4"...I also didn't temper it persay either...I did have to move the limbs over some to align my string tracking, and tried to even it up a tad better trying to match each limbs profile...but theres still some subtle kinks as you can see

a good bowyer chooses his wood wisely ;) its not a "dense" piece for hackberry persay, and it has a high ring count for ring porous wood(~35rpi) with not even a very good ratio of early to late wood....BUT its trump card lies in the fact that it came from the tension side of the tree, and is naturally reflexed to boot..ive found in my experiences with most species this to be excellent wood not wanting to give up much set
-
Nice bow! How does it shoot?
-
I'd say you dun it. That belly button must have been a challenge in tillering. Nice
-
thanks to everyone for the replies :)
@wizardgoat...shoots good enough for me..its no barn burner, but its a long bow and likes the heavier arrows(go figure ;) ...) ....so to answer your question...like a longbow :) smooth to draw, and steady in the hand on release ;)

Looks good Chris. Nice finish and tiller.
-
Looking good. I hope that knot is not working because I do think I see a bit of a crack on the bottom edge of it.

Yeah...im aware of it...Even tho it was peeled and sealed it still checked a little there where theres a small open dark cavity there...it wasn't punky wood tho,and since the tree started growing new wood over top of it I didn't wanna drill it out,and it seemed "sound" from the belly side as well...I kept close watch of it,n it never opened further...and I didn't even shoot super glue in it until after I shot it in...at least its going with the grain, and if it opened more it wood just run along the grain staying well away from an edge...I'd just wrap it if it grew more...besides the point of the exercise is to show with the right piece of hackberry in the right hands can handle the elb cross section in compression, and we already know how crazy strong it is in tension... So who cares if it did let loose in tension ;) it has ~150 arras thru it so far,and i will keep shooting it to see how it fairs in the long run..so far so good ...if anything happens negative to it I will update...but if ya never see me update then ya known alls well

Excellent ELB with some character.
Nice one.
Del
The shelf is a bit naughty... If I wus dead, I'd be turning in my grave ::)
-
Nice work man. She turned out nice. I like the stain job. That's one big bow I would look like a kid shooting that thing. How is the shock. I bet it draws smooooooth.
-
I always look forward to seeing one of your bows. 8). I really miss your blunt honesty also. I think we need a little more of that on this site. It is good to see a post.
-
Great bow Chris!!! Is that the hackberry we cut in the spring?
Jon
-
In the growth rings on the belly side of the knot you can see your face staring back at you at the top.
At the bottom is a chubby alien carrying a giant dog head on his right shoulder.
Yeah, I see pictures in wood grain. ;D
-
Nice bow BH. Now go shoot a deer with it ;)
-
Cool 8)
-
Nvm Chris i answered my own question when I went back and read. The stuff we cut had huge rings
-
Thanks guys
Pat...what r u smoking??? Gimme sum ::) I see the face but not the alien and dog head
Matt its not really shocky..hackberry is a light wood so it does well in that regard
Yeah Jon this wasn't the stuff we cut...this came from the Ohio batch I cut a few years ago...I actually gave you a stave from this stuff when josh(gun doc) was over hanging out..he got one too n already made a bow from it...you ever finish yours?
-
Nicely done. Impressive that it is holding that reflex. Not sure about the yew dye job though...I say, let hackberry be hackberry. That is just me though.
Always enjoy seeing your bows.
-
Very cool. Hackberry's ability to make a great shooter surprised me in the beginning. It is still surprising me. Great job!
-
Well, that is definitely an ELB made from hackberry ;) Looks long and smooth, nice work Chris.
Don
-
nice bow congrats :)
-
It's on my list to finish... Roughed it out and never got back to it
-

-
