Title: First selfbow harvest
Post by: Ken S on October 28, 2014, 10:49:04 pm
Hi everyone, let me start by saying this was the shortest hunt for me ever,But also the most exiting hunt ever.I harvested this six point oct 12th in Lake orion MI. The stand I was hunting in that night is maybee 60 yard off a main rd. It was warm that day so I was moving slow walking to my stand when I saw what looked like a deer, so  I stopped and scanned through the thickets and saw antlers. I watched him watching me for a minute or two with the wind in my face( thank god ) before he trotted off. So I get to my stand and climbed slowly waiting for the sound of the passing cars before each lift of my climbing stand. Now I'm  15' up a Black Locust tree that grew up  inside of a white pine,I hung my backpack on a pine branch, pulled my bow up and knocked an arrow. I just got settled (maybee 5 minutes) and hear he comes with his nose in the air,he stopped at about 12 yards perfectly broadside, I drew hit my anchor point and released. I never heard the the bow, the only sound I heard was the 610 grain arrow sinking through the ribcage. Simply awesome, double lung, broadhead went through both sides and he ran about 50 yards toward the road(bonus).

62'' Hickory two piece takedown
610 grain cedar arrows 4'' three Fletch
woodsman broadheads

Thanks for the kind words everyone, it was a great hunt, short but awesome. The bow came from a shagbark hickory half log 33''long.The handle is not primitive but does work well,It's  a  fiberglass handgrip wrapped in deer leather.

Congrats on a fine shot. I too would like to know more about the bow. Did you make the takedown sleeve out of fiberglass? I have been contemplating the same thing.

Man that is great!  Just something about being in the right place, at the right time, and being calm enough to make the shot placement! Sometimes luck smiles on you, instead of the deer. ;) That is a nice set up.  As I understand it, Shagbark hickory, makes a great bow.  Seems to have performed quite well, in that situation.  As did you!  Congratulations on some great eating.  If you ever had any little doubts, about the bow, and arrows, you have, I think they have been run off by your ALRIGHT!! shout, fist and arm pumping up and down, and doing the happy dance! Thanks for sharing.

Big Jim's bow co. on youtube he has a series of videos for the fg handle, of course it is a bit different for a selfbow.

Thanks for looking everyone, yes I'm still excited and I'll be in the woods this weekend with a more primitive set
