Title: Officially measuring flight record distances?

How is this done? With laser range finders, or some method of measurement along the ground?

We use a survey machine called an all station. It triangulates into infinity. In theory your shooting line could be 100 miles long or longer. As long as you shot at 90 degrees to the shooting line you would not loose anything on your measurement which is taken from the center. It knows how far left and ight you are from the center and just calcualtes the shortest distance from the shooting line.

On a 400 yard shot if you are 50 yards off your line you were shooting it might cost you about 3.5 yards penalty.
