Title: Crazy Bow- Not for BOM- Two more photos
Post by: George Tsoukalas on December 20, 2014, 04:02:51 pm
This one is made from a hickory stave. 48# at 26 in.
The top limb is really funky unbraced. Hard to describe. I may take a photo later on.
The tiller looks pretty good here.
I'm about 50/50 on giving the top limb a few scrapes.
What do you think?
I'm not sure I want that top limb bending anymore.
I have to evaluate.:)
But anyway it's a bow that should not have been.
It shoots nicely.

George, I dont see anything wrong with that tiller at all, regardless of the unbraced profile. Shoot it  8)

Jawge, it looks like time to stop scraping and start shooting. Can't tell for sure without seeing the unbraced limb, but if it has less bend than the lower limb when unbraced, then it's probably just right as is.

But you know that!

asharrow, shows a bit weaker at brace so I may leave it. Gotta study on it.
It shoots well.

My impression at first look was beautiful even bend. Only studied the top limb after I read that you were considering a few scrapes there. Does look a little stiffer there but you gotta know what else is going on
with the stave, which means you gotta be the one who worked it and the one drawing and shooting it.
As you know George the picture doesn't tell the whole story. :)  Nice work.

Thanks, Badly Bent. Yes, I am leaning towards leaving it. That top limb had too many problems.

Thanks, Brad, for the kind  words.

Looks a little stiff starting about 10" (2 of your hand widths) above your hand (1 hand width above the top of the pic in the background)...but if it is shooting good, you may want to call it a finished bow.

Leave it, Jawge!
First I thought it is bending a little much at fade upper limb. But looking at braced and unbraced I'm convinced you did a great job on that tiller.
Shoot that stick!

I think the upper is too stiff overall and needs a little bit of scraping from about 8 - 10 inches from the handle to the tip.

Because of the unbraced pic showing the deflex off the handle.

I'll decide if I shoot today. Again it does shoot well and is even at the handle as I draw it.

If I've learned nothing else in about 25 years of making bows, it is to "listen" to the stave. I think this one is telling me to leave it alone. LOL.

The stave was bending quite nicely on the rope and pulley with the bottom limb just a bit stiffer just the way I want it.

This stave split out  in a weird way. The top limb ended up 1" wide out of the fades. Pretty rebellious!

Bottom and top limb have a bit of natural prop twist which decidedly affects tiller appearance.

One limb was reflexed more than the other so I had t heat in a little more reflex in one to even it out. That top limb retained a bit more reflex.

The string ended up way off the handle at first nock stringing so I cut in the nocks more on on one side and then even out the nock grooves later on when I finished the nocks.

Like I've always said tiller with as many senses as you...not just the sense of sight.

Thank you, MW, simson, mike, Bob, chamookman and everyone. Your opinions are valued.

Merry Christmas!

Jawge

Always a good idea to look at both sides while tillering character staves. I'll try to get a pic of the "other" side asap.

Tiller looks Great, Jawge. In the first picture I thought I saw a flat spot, I think it was a whoop de do, now. The other shot I don't see it, might have been the light.

Glad to see you still making bows and Merry Christmas.

Nice work on that wonky rebellious stave, looks like everything is moving like it should 8)

Looks great Jawge! What are you going to do to finish it out/ have you had any thoughts? Does it give you any visual problems being thin and funky in the arrow window area? will you have to do anything out of the ordinary with arrow plate or rest?

I sure enjoyed seeing the pics and the results of your work.

Thanks, Chief. I am going to use brown Rid Dye in alcohol. At the nock area I'll use another color...probably blue.
Then I'll give it 3 coats of  spar spray urethane.
Nothing special on the handle. I'll add a wedge of leather for a rest and  a leather strike plate. I'll lace on a  handle.
Thanks.

Great to see a bow posted by one of the masters!  After all these years and all of the bows that you have built, it is a lesson for all of us to see how you approach the tillering process.  You are involving more sets of eyes and opinions and seeking out the best tiller possible.  Great job Jawge.  Looked like a tough stave.  Prop twist is always a challenge for me.  That one looks like a sweet shooter to me.

Thank you, my friend, for the kind words.
All these years all I've wanted was to interest as many as I could in making bows.
I bet the ancients had several sets of eyes to help in the tillering
Merry Christmas!
