Title: Sinew backed osage with copperhead skins
Post by: Floridabowyer on April 17, 2015, 11:18:14 am
This is a short (48 inch) sinew backed osage bow i built about a year ago and was bow #4 for me and my first experience with sinew. It has two courses of whitetail leg sinew on it and as you can see from the unstrung photo I didnt put enough reflex in it prior to sinewing. It is a very nice shooting bow though as I'm a lefty shooter and the string tracks the right side of the handle. The arrows come out of it straight and they seem to go where I'm looking. Kinda unusual for me!

The bow is 47 inches nock to nock, 1 1/8 inches wide at handle tapering to 5/8 tips. Tillered to 24 inches where it pulls 38 lbs.

She looks good from what I can see. I bet its hard to shoot upside down like that though.  ;D

Pat B,
First bow I built I assumed since I was right handed I must be right eye dominant. Then one day a fellow was watching me shoot and after laughing at my groups suggested I check to see which eye was dominant and it turned out to be the left. Since I built the bow with a shelf on the left side I gave it to a friend and started a new one! I've been trying to learn to shoot well ever since!

It looks slick best I can tell. Id like to see bigger more clear pics.

If you shoot instinctively and with both eyes open eye dominance shouldn't make a difference.

Pat B
I'm certain you are right but I seem to shoot better left handed so I may as well keep at what I have been doing. Sorta feels strange shooting right handed now.

Besides, you can't give the target the ol' stinkeye with both eyes open! Top picture looked like a Teeter Inversion out take, eh? Nice work though, this is about bowyer skills, not photography :)

I'm left eye dominant but shoot with my right hand. I wonder if my accuracy would increase if I shot left. It just seems akward to me.

If you are a hunter it's not a bad idea to be able to shoot with either hand

I see what you are talking about Pat B, especially awkward tree stand shots.

That's a good point pat. All my hunting up till now has been rifles or pistols but I can't wait to take my first archery kill. Something just seems so much more satisfying to take a deer with a bow and arrow u made with your hands. Bring me back to my Indian roots.

More pics. Sorry Pearl but with my limited photography equipment (cellphone) this is the best I can do for now! I will invest in a digital cam for future shots.

I upload them to a photo site like photobucket  (free) then copy/paste the location and it shows up here. .

Talking about cross dominance. .

I'm left handed. . But i play golf/baseball/shoot a bow/throw a ball,  right handed with left eye dominant. .. i shoot a pistol rifle shotgun write and eat lefty. .. i box ambidextrous...
I'm physically stronger right handed. ..

I'm all messed up

i have experienced the bow holding more reflex if it is heated into shape before putting the sinew on(then bracing backwards to cure),, also a course of sinew means something different to everyone,, so I have weighed my sinew so if it is not enough I can put more etc,, I have had good results with about 800 to 1000 grains of sinew applied to 50ish inch bows,,less than that and seems the bow does not hold reflex as well,, still shoots well but not quite the cast you would like,,,

PAHunter,
Thanks! I bet there are a few copperheads around PA. Sure looks cool on the osage. Hoping to find some more skins because we dont have the southern copperhead in central fl. Had a friend give these to me and I think they were from further north.

The easiest way Ive found to post max sized pics is buy opening them from your PC using "paint", just right click on the pic. Then resize/skew them to about 30 x 30 to start. That usually gets them near 200mp and still big enough to see.

bradsmith,
Thanks for the detailed info on the amount of sinew needed. This has been a question of mine for a while. On the juniper I just sinewed I just tried to lay it on as even as possible using the "brick wall" pattern with each course being about 1/8 inch thick viewed from the side. After gelling and a weeks cure its more like < 1/16 inch thick viewed from the side per course. I repeated this process 4 more times and the sinew has been curing for a little over two weeks since the final course and has shrunk to a little less than 1/4 inch thick. Im going to take your advice and weigh the sinew on the next bow. Also, I sure wish I would have done what you suggested about reflex on this osage but I was very inexperienced with the heat gun at the time.

there are lots of ways to approach it,, I just string it backwards and then heat the belly till it holds the reflex I want,, :)
