Title: White Ash Taken Down by Beaver. Bow wood.
Post by: Jazzdad on April 18, 2015, 01:13:06 pm
A beaver took down a beautiful white ash and at least three maples. No idea how long ago. Sawed a branch to see if the wood looked good and it does. Any way to know if it's worthy of becoming a bow. I need to borrow a chain saw, just wondering if I can gauge the quality of the wood before I bother my neighbor. Oh, the section I want is off the ground with bark intact and no sign of bug damage.

I know Osage is slow to rot... Not sure about ash or maple.

Only one way to find out for sure  if it will make a good bow !
Make one and tell us how it went.

If you are ever not sure of the wood make a scaled down mini bow. Make everything to scale and it will be under the same strain as a full sized bow.

Think I'm going to get the chain saw and give it a go. The branch I took off earlier was a little iffy but the tree is about 8 inches in diameter so the main trunk might be okay.

Thanks for all the advice.

Just chop down a primo tree, and say to anyone that has a problem, "yep, the beavers got to this one too."
Leave it to Beaver, classic pun Jawge. I'm in my 40's so I got to watch reruns, sounds like many of the young un's haven't shared that experience(they might be considered lucky by some). :)

Hamish, thanks. I figured a huge generation gap (I'm 66) would keep most from getting that one. That was a baby boomer show. That was a great show! :)
