Post by: Ryan_Gill_HuntPrimitive on February 04, 2008, 04:36:37 pm
i was doin some squirrel hunting with my bow the other day but the squirrels werent movin so i did some exploring and found an old homstead and scooped up some glass from a mirror, tv sceen and a toilet tank.
now i have knapped chert, obs, dacite, noviculite....etc  and i know you can knap al the glass stuff but i never did any of it, mainly because non ever just fell into my lap. well i took some pieces home and played with them a bit  here is what i came up with

thanks guys, the glass on the bottom right is actually the best outa the 3 for sure. its got good flakes all the way to center and nice'n thin and SHARP.  its a shame that glass doesnt show detail well in pictures.   i got some more from the same place today so i am goin to hopefully knock out another tonight, so i'll take pictures of that too if i get around to it.

David w.- I was following along with you misfortune with the glass and your hand. Frmo what i gathered you folks said no more knappin?  if so thats a shame cuz with a little practice you could be there soon enough. how old are you now? perhaps soon enough they will let you give it another try.

im 14 and yer right no more knappin. maybe with kevlar gloves but not soon maybe ina few months or next year at the soonest.  i really enjoyed it.

The wine bottle i was working on was SOO sharp i couldnt believe it.  I never once felt the cut.  It could easily kill a deer

yeah your young still, you have plenty of time to learn. once it cools off a bit, get a piece of toiler tank and show them that its not real sharp (compared to glass) they may let you work with that

My mom was in an extremely good mood because i got a partial scholarship to the highschool i will be attending next year.

I convinced my mom to let me knap porcelin.
So i can knap again i just have to wear gloves and i cant do it when i am home alone :)

your points are very very nice

i am just starting to learn how to knap.  i am starting with glass as i have heard its easier  than stone and its free. there isnt alot of flint in florida .  How does porcelain rate. is it just ornamental or could ou use it to hunt?    Noah

i am not sure i think porcelin would be fine target/small game point but i dont think it would be a very good big game point

i would certainly say that glass easier, i am in FL too and very rarly come across and natural flints, so i am forces to buy most of it. but glass and porcelain are free. glass makes a very sharp head and will suffice for hunting, porcelain, can too, but its more difficult to knpa and really have to concenrate to get good flakes to center to get it sharp enough- Ryan

Porcelain is quite capable of taking a hunting-sharp edge, and the flakes can be extremely sharp. It takes practice to get a hunting-sharp edge on any material. Porcelain is also really variable, ranging from cruddy and unknappable to very good quality material. Typical toilet tanks fall somewhere in mid-range. The older tanks seem to be better quality than the newer ones.
