He's already yacking about it Pauly. He'll be there come hell or high water. Greg wants us all to set up east of the club house in the pines. That's a tough ticket if you don't there early.

I don't see myself getting there early probably won't be able to miss work or maybe just a little. all I'm bringing is a single man tent and I'm living out of your camper the rest of the time >:D

We'll be there on thursday I'm thinking and probably bring Nate with us since the kid had so much fun at Marshall. Beautiful setting up there in those pines and I'm hoping there will be less mosquitos up there,
last year I left camp 2 pints low on blood.

Greg those skeeters we had last year were uncommon. Most years there are a few or none until you get nearer the river bottom. Lets hope its dry this year and they are gone.

The white motel is home safe and sound from Cloverdale Pappy and clean as a whistle, (maybe not that clean). We'll put it in place in late July, which isn't far off now. Dave and the Cloverdale bunch put on a GREAT shoot! Can't wait to spend some time with all the guys at Elm Hall.

I will be there Chris, and should be brewing beer this weekend.  I'll do the same Brew as last year.
I will try to get up on Friday, maybe even Thursday night.

I'm also thinking about bringing the garden sprayer filled with mosquito juice.   I use it on my back yard, and works great. We don't want Greg, Sharron or smokey to get all they're blood sucked out.

Can't wait!!

I agree, there are TONS of guys walking around that look just like you pappy! I think your mixed up Ed.

Getting closer fella's. Maybe just maybe we got all this rain out of our system and the skeeters will be their usual well  behaved selves. Last year was the worst they've been in my time at the shoot. Most years there are little to none.

I might have been mistaking Chris, but this Pappy look a like had bare feet and blue jean coveralls on,,,,,,,just saying.

BTW, as part of the build area would you mind If I brought a couple of deer hides up to work on brain tanning or just making raw hide.

I've never done either, and I know that the guy who looks a a lot like Pappy will be there, and he knows a thing or two about tanning hides.  I may be able to pick his brain if I offer him up a beer or two.

I'd ask the "real" Pappy, but I know that I couldn't bribe him with a non Miller lite beer.  lol

We've just had a hatch after the weekend rain.  Can't go outside without long sleeves.  Going to pick spray up for the fogger tonight.  We got 'em thick in Perry, MI.  Do ticks eat mosquitoes?  If so, bring a jar for my house.  Maybe the lesser of two evils. >:D

Keep yourself hydrated with plenty of Miller Lite Matt. It makes the skeeters happy and extends your blood supply!

Well I'm bringing a pump sprayer for the skeeters and just one can of beer,  "but it is a 5 gal can".

I brewed last Sunday,  so the beer will be Ready at the end of the month.  I decided to brew a double batch and  bottle a case for the auction.  Hopefully the club will make a little money off of it.

I also will be bringing some staves to sell or barter and a couple of hides to work on.
Can't wait!

Well the Elm Hall brew is being kegged today, and I'm putting the final touches on a bow I've been playing with all winter.  Now I just need to get some arrows fletched so that I can "seed" the michigan woods with them. Lol

I was wondering if anyone would like to do a primitive fire making demonstration?  I've never been successful at using a bow drill, but I'm sure there are some guys out there in the PA organization that know a thing or two about it.
So if anyone knows somebody who's good at using a bowl drill or other primitive fire making methods it may be a fun activity to view or participate in for one of the afternoons.  I'm sure the kids would get a kick out of it, so would  adults like myself.
in between shooting.
Chime in if anyone is interested, or if you know somebody who may be good at putting on a primitive fire making demonstration.

I'm always impressed by a primitive made fire.  I can't see it enough.  I have a flint/steel kit that I've never tried on my own.  It might be a good excuse to put it to use.

I'm with Ed on the primitive fire making. We could work together to try and make one. Does anyone know what materials work best for the main parts?
Title: Re: Elm Hall 2015
Post by: Stixnstones on July 13, 2015, 09:12:47 pm
For fire makin material i like to use the inner fiber of dead bark hangin on a dead limb.( can't tell ya what kind o tree, have used many) and pine resin.
Title: Re: Elm Hall 2015
Post by: Forest_Farmer on July 13, 2015, 10:29:50 pm

I'm glad to see all the  interest in the Primitive fire making.  It is something I've wanted to try to do ever since I was little kid, so hopefully we can make it happen at Elm hall!

I'll start to look up some of best woods for the different parts of the bow set up.  I figured that making the bow itself will be pretty easy.  It's The wood for the spindle and the actual lower board or fireboard that I'm not sure of.

Any suggestions?

I know Elm Hall is a great event just to far by myself and makes 2 weekends in a row in that state up north !!
a lot of things have to come together just right to get there or I would have been there many times by now

Bow drill easiest materials to use for beginners is Yucca drill on Yucca fire board  lay it on a dry piece of Shagbark Hickory bark them big scales are sturdy and tuff
for you folks that get to the Cloverdale shoot the fields around there are littered with little Geodes that are split in half already by frost they are sweet bearing blocks
Hickory or Elm sprigs make good tuff bows in case you did not already know
but string is a differant matter so you folks figure out that part
can't give you all the good clues right off now can I !

Not to toot my own born, but I'm pretty good at primitive fire. Can get it done more often than not.

Not totally sure what's growing right around there but I seem to remember a cedar swamp. Cedar and basswood are about as good as it gets up where I am (TC). If we can find a fallen cedar to split up we can make more bow drill kits than we'd know what to do with.

Tony I tried that exact set up. All I could get for hours was intense smoke. I assume moisture in the hearth or drill was my killer. I am more than ready to learn how to do this right. Cant wait!

Pearlie, I've seen those plates of food you pile up. No way will you be done eating! $ for St. Jude's is good. I just don't need any photography of my "marksmanship", or celebrities asking me to hurry up and find your arrows so the entourage can get through. In case your not sure, it's all in jest. I'm all about shooting and eating that great meal, and having fun! Looking forward to Saturday.

Tony,
It sounds like you're one of the primitive fire guys to watch, I'm looking forward to learning from ya.  I haven't tried making a bow drill fire sense I was a kid and had the same results as Chris, lots of smoke but never an ember.
What day you planning to get there, and are you still thinking about bringing any hides to tan?  I was going to get a couple soaking this weekend.
Ed
Title: Re: Elm Hall 2015
Post by: nakedfeet on July 23, 2015, 09:37:22 pm
On fire stuff: I too struggled for a long time only getting smoke and getting a terrible squealing noise. But it really comes down to technique and stamina. Materials are important too -- but only to a point. I've made coals with a bowdrill kit that was made from maple (albeit only a few!). With the right technique and practice, knowing what to feel and how to change what you're doing, I'm sure any one of you can do it. And with the right kit it becomes almost easy!

I just practised with the hand drill for the first time in a couple years probably. No coal, but I think it was pretty close!

I will bring some materials (not much).

Ed, I'll probably bring a hide or two. I have one that needs re-softening, so I might just bring that one since I could do that in a couple hours.

I hate to say it, and you guys are going to hate me for this, but I think the bow I'm going to shoot most with is a glasser. :X Truth is, since last fall I haven't even finished a bow, truly. I've started many, but haven't made any that I'm truly happy with. The one I was working on at Marshall ended up fretting (I'll bring it anyways), and after that I picked one up from my corner of shame and got it to the point where it just needs to be shot in, but it's <40#. The board bow I have been shooting for the past year+ -- I'll bring it, but it too is starting to fret after heavy use. I have two that could do well with touch-ups. We'll see. I shoot the glass bow well though, and it's what I've been shooting so not adjustments needed.

Life has a way of getting in the way. I might start one this week, but it definitely won't be finished by Friday. I guess I'll have to bring a stave or two (and/or see what I can score down there), and maybe bust my ass over the weekend. Will depend on whether I'm feeling more like work or play though. /shrug

Less than a week for me now.  The "Elm Hall Brew" is kegged and I'll be bottling up a case for the raffle.
Just need to make a trip the REI to repuchase some camping gear.  Someone broke into my car a couple of weeks ago and figured they needed my stuff more than I did. Luckily everything was covered by insurance and everything can be replaced.

See you all soon,

Had a great time at Elm Hall. Courses were excellent, bugs nearly non-existent, lots of familiar faces, and the food was awesome. Got a chance to shot Greg's (badly bent) buckthorn bow. His workmanship is even better in person. Greg's grandson won a hat is a shoot, and was a fine young man to visit with. My buddy KH and I  shot both courses, and I was able to out muscle him and his musclewood bow with the sassafras gem he built me! I'm always amazes at the talents and energy of the PA crew whether it is building, harvesting, or passing on the love of the bent stick.

I finished an elm bow up there died with blackberries from the field, and sent a young boy home with the new Osage bow. The only regret I have is only having two days up there but well worth it. This years Elm Hall shoot was a blast, thanks to all the club members. Real nice breezy weather, tasty food,
and the campfire visits were a riot. Good to see so many friends again while doing what we enjoy most.
You guys laid out a couple of nice courses as well, had a great time shooting through those multiple times with the wife and grandson. The kids events on saturday were very thoughtful and Nate was thrilled to win a club hat to wear around.
Also a thanks to Mike, (owlbait) for giving Nate some nicely made arrows. Soon as we got home he laid 'em out on the dining room table to look over and admire the colors.
I only took about 3 pics. and they were of the full moon and night sky from our view at the campfire, wish I had had the camera out during the day but was having to good a time to think of it.

I didn't touch my phone/camera for 3 1/2 days. Still has the same battery charge, so no pics here. My personal highlight of the weekend, except seeing all my buddies, was the fire starting. Barefoot Tony set us all up and had us making true blue friction fires in minutes. THANK YOU Tony for showing us/me. Its been a personal goal of mine for a very long time. Its was liberating to say the least.

The longer I know these guys I call my friends the harder it gets to pack up and leave. Here's to Grayling 2015 all ye' deer slayers!

Well, I've only been to three of these kinds of events, but this one was without a doubt the best. Bummed it had to end so soon!

Thanks to Ed for saving a camping spot for me, beer, some real good food, a couple of staves, good stories, and the hospitality.

Thanks to Greg and Sharon (and Nate) for lunch!

Thanks to the Chris and Chris, Paul, Ryan, Ed, Dan and Dan, Cody, Jake, and many others for letting me chat about archery/bow making, pick their brains while they worked, giving me someone to shoot the courses with multiple times, find arrows, jokes, snacks, stories, etc.

Thanks to Greg and Cody for helping me find a good tree, cut it down, cut it up, and carry it out of the woods.

Thanks to everyone at the club for putting on a great event with lots of fun stuff to do.

And thanks to all the guys who were interested in the primitive fire stuff. I thought I'd bring my stuff out, and being out of practice if I even could get a fire going I'd get some Oo's and Ah's and give some tips and that'd pretty much be it, but it was much better than that. I've taught quite a few people how to do it, in the context of classes and stuff, and I have never seen so many people pick it up so fast or have success so early. I'd love to say I'm just a good teacher, but I think this is clearly an example of good students.

Can't wait until next year! I'm really excited to see what kind of bows all of us come up with, can't wait to shoot the course, can't wait for the awesome dinner, the good stories, the knowledge....

I finally got home from the U.P. and started catching up with the Elm Hall posts.

I too had a great time, and came away from this years event with a great sense of accomplishment from building my first friction fires.

Thank you Tony for your bringing your gear and knowledge!  For the record you are a very good teacher, and that was key everyone being successful.  Because of your efforts, while in the UP, I was able to collect materials from the surrounding woods and make several friction fires. I also passed on this knowledge to my 79 year old neighbor.

Thanks to both Chris's, Paul, and Dan for helping me with harvesting my first Elm.  Hopefully I will make something worthy of the efforts (Paul).  A special thanks also goes out to Greg "Badly Bent" and Sharon for saving me a killer camp sight, and letting me share meals with you.

The food, friends and laughter around the camp fires was fantastic.  It's amazing how many friends I've made after only being evolved in traditional archery for only 3 years.  Some of the finest people I ever met.  Can't wait to see you all again next year!!

I will also be posting a few pictures once I figure out how to reduce them to a good posting size.

Thank you Ed for cooking up that moose tenderloin for us, that was deeeelicious. You wasted no time I see putting together a nice friction fire kit. Your right about Tony being a first rate instructor, he let me have a go at it on one of his kits and it worked on my first attempt. Thanks for sharing your skills Tony.
Your right about this being a great place to make some of the best friends a guy could ask for, I'm always looking forward to the next gathering and hanging out with the PA family. See ya at the next one cottontail. :)

The best part is that that story is that is was 100% true,,,, maybe I shouldn't admit that,  but it was funny.
