Fella's,
We have been tossing an idea around about an Elm Hall elm bow build off. Here is where we are, let me know who is interested and/or what you'd like to see changed. We are totally open and just brain storming.
1> Each bowyer will chose an elm sapling at this years shoot,2015.
2> Build a bow over the following year.
3> Display completed bows in the club house for the 2016 shoot to be silent auctioned and judged by a panel of who's-who. The winner of each year will have his/her name added to a plaque that will be displayed in the club house. Donating your bow back to the club IS NOT MANDATORY.
4> Proceeds go back to the club to fund the best shoot in Michigan in 2017, and beyond.
I think it would be fun and a great benefit to the club. Sounds like a win-win to me. I also think it would be good for our hobby to display the bows all weekend and allow folks to look at them up close and handle them some.
Im in!

That sounds like a great Idea. I'm in /no thoughts on the cost, just let me know. Love that place. :) They have been so good to me over the years anything I can do to help them out would be a very small payment back in my eyes. :)

Im in!!!. Anything i can do to help any club that promotes stick bows 8)
-
I knew I could count on both of you guys, best friends a guy could have.
It'll fun choosing a sapling to snip down without all you ya-hoo's eyeballing it!
-
Good Idea Pearly
If you can snatch a stick for me I will send it back with a string on it
I am working on a similar idea at Marshall , trying to get Wilder Creek to cut that black locust that is leaning over my campsite into six foot long pieces for next year !
-
Good idea Guy. Ill be sure to grab a stick for you this year and get it to you one way or another.
-
I am hopping to be at GLLI the following weekend and several folks go from Elm Hall strait to GLLI so if it looks like I can get there I will let you know and you can send it with one of them
Take care buddy!
-
Sounds great Chris, I'll be up to the challenge, if you can stand me txting you every other day for advice. I never whittled on white wood yet.
I could also txt Pappy, Paul and Guy, since they're going to be part of it and they all build some damn fine bows.
So it the club going to do the cutting, it will the participants do it? Either way sounds like a great idea.
See us soon,
Ed
-
Aww, and I'm not gonna make it this year :(
-
Ed we will pick and snip our own elm saplings. That way there are NO EXCUSES!
-
Aww, and I'm not gonna make it this year :(
That sucks J-Syn.....
-
Count me in, Drums! I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to give back to the club. Can't say enough about the Elm Hall crew. They're a top notch, group. Be sure to include pics.
-
I knew I could count on you Matty! This will add yet another fun angle to the shoot. That auction table will beyond impressive at the 2016 shoot! I will be tossing bids out, that's for sure.
-
Ok, so now Matt's going to make a elm bow also. Am I the only rookie who going to step up to the plate???
I feel like a kid amongst Giants . This will be fun!!
-
If rookies are allowed, I would like to give it a try.
-
That's the spirit Paul! You have a full year to get her done, you'll do just fine my friend.
-
Wish i could go this would be fun to do
-
Ill send you a stick of elm and you can send me a bow back next year bubbly. Ill be sure everybody knows where it cam from.
-
Or we get a donation pot going and he could bring it himself.
-
Good call knocker. But I doubt that old, decrepit NOCAL stud will fly over to see us?
-
Best bet now would be send me a stick pearls, I'll get back to see u guys when i can let me know the shipping
-
Shipping? PAAAAAALEASE! Your money is no good here amigo.
-
If Bub travels with his elm bow to 2016 Elm Hall then I'll be sure to put in an appearance! ;D
-
This is a great idea pearl onions, I;ll sharpen up the hand saw and you can count me in. :)
-
I'll bring a saw also.... i used gregs saw before O:)
-
I'll try to remember shellac and maybe a wedge or two.
-
I am getting old, I will bring a chain saw or borrow one from Rocky. ;) ;D ;D
Pappy
-
I've got a brand new chain saw Pappy and you're welcome to it.
-
;D :D ;) 8)
-
;) ;D ;D You are the man rocky. :)
Pappy
-
I'd be into that! I'd love to get my hands on some more Elm (I have one stave). Not much of it grows up here.
-
Well then, your in Tony Boloney!
-
I dig this
-
You know I'm all in! 8)
-
Sweet guys! This is going to be fun.
-
Looks like the "rookie class" could use another.... count me in!
-
I knew you'd bite!! This is going to be some GOOD fun stuff over the next year.
-
I'm embarrassed to say I just saw this thread...but to my defense y'all started it when I was deep in the Colorado mountain wilderness. ;)
Ya know im game...but not sure who's gonna even put one bid on one of my junkers with all the better bowyers bows on the table.
-
Not sure how the law of supply and demand is going to play out in this , maybe they will have to spread the auction out over a few years
-
Even if they don't go for that much in my mind it still the thought that counts n even if I could put a hundred bucks in elm halls pockets that would make it well worth it for me. Maybe they would do better just doing a raffle. You probably have a better chance of selling 20 bucks of tickets to everybody then getting 10 people to lay down big bucks
-
I'm pretty sure it will be a raffle style. Buckets by each bow. Folks buy "x" amount of tickets and place them in whatever bucket(s) they chose. What I like second to the money raised is the fact a lot people who don't build/own self bows will have a chance at many high class self bows. That's special all by itself.
-
I'd still do one or two as a silent auction, to give the "unlucky" people a better chance, besides the silent auctions do decent at Elm Hall - unless el'cheapskate DGF wants to play then he whines for years how he go beat! >:D
-
ya and when there is nothing in my bucket you can still give it away !
Well maybe someone will take it off your hands , if you promise not to tell .
All in fun Chris !!
-
Would be good if we did a few kids sized bows also to add to the raffle, always nice to see a kid walk away with a prize. If I can get a sapling big enough for 2 bows I'll be sure and do one in a youngsters size and
one in a big hairy man size.
-
No way I can attend but I would love to help.
-
I was thinking the same thing Greg, maybe just put all the jr cards in a drawing that's what we do at black powder rendezvous
-

Jon maybe we can find a stave to send your way, then you can just send it back whenever your done.

I thought they were all kids bows cause "I don't want to grow up"
and like my niece says " uncle Guy when you going to another 4H for adults weekend"
-
Greg, making up some kid size bows sound like a great idea . Getting the kids involved in the raffle should definitely help generate more revenue for the club , and get the little ones more interested in archery .
Chris, I also had a thought about having too many bows in the auction.
My wife is on the committee for the Heart Ball here in Tennessee. They raise money for the Heart Association, and for their raffle they have asked me to build a bow, which I plan to do. I told them about the great bowyers in this group, "You guys" , who build some true works of art.
I could ask them if they would like two or three bows from this group to be auctioned off at the 2016 event his coming February. The proceeds could be split 50-50 between the two organizations.
The heart ball attracts some highrollers from middle Tennessee , so the bidding could be high. This is just a thought, but let me know what you think, and I could ask the questions on this end.

I don't think we can have too many bows. Yes it may pull in less per bow, but really the ultimate goal is to introduce primitive archery to a lot of lucky people. Maybe just maybe those same winners grab a stave and rasp and hang out under the tent in 2016 with us ya-hoo's!
If we have say, 15-18 bows. I see no reason we cant make 10 draw 28" and the rest can be split amongst ladies and kids. Im sure we'll talk it over as a group next weekend.
-
Lots of nice elm was cut this weekend. Im hoping to see at least a dozen bows on the raffle table next year guys. My bark peeled like a banana, but a few others didnt...sorry to those whose didnt peel off...that stinks...or maybe yins whose didnt peel need to learn how to choose a better candidate...lol
-
Mine got home to TN, I will see what I can do with it in a few weeks, thanks Matt for taking up my slack. ;) :)
Pappy
-
Got lucky and picked an easy to peel one myself, should be two bows in it if I do my part. A big thank you to the club for allowing us to cut timber there. I've never seen so many elm trees to pick from in one location before. A lot of excitement generated when you turn a bunch of bowyers loose to cut wood. :)
-
I want to thank the club also for letting us cut. Blackhawk and I shared a tree and I grabbed an inch and a quarter sapling shoot off the top of it. I'd like to show up with 1 adult and 1 kids bow out of what I got for the raffle table
-
Got my Elm staves, also. Liked to kick my butt, hauling them outta the woods. It's a cool thing though, cutting your own bow wood. Adds an element of Mojo to the bow. Looking forward to seeing what turns out of them all!
Pappy, No problem. ;)

Would be kewl to have posting that documents progress on all those saplings. With lil luck, will be there next year to participate in the bidding.

Good idea mike...ill post the progress on mine after each worked session....wood be neat if we all did...ill just post it to this thread n keep it going. Or maybe start a new thread and put it in the bows forum so more folks see it,and generate more interest for the raffle. What say yins guys?
-
Thats a great idea Blackhawk, once it gets rolling maybe sticky it up top to keep it on the first page
-

That's what I was thinking, kind of like the trade bow thread(s).
-
Also (sorry for the double post....),
I'm pretty sure it will be a raffle style. Buckets by each bow. Folks buy "x" amount of tickets and place them in whatever bucket(s) they chose. What I like second to the money raised is the fact a lot people who don't build/own self bows will have a chance at many high class self bows. That's special all by itself.
I think this sounds like the best idea. Just makes the most sense. I guess a silent auction type deal wouldn't be a bad idea either.
-
Good by me. Just let us know where to post.
-
I just posted/created it in the bows forum guys.
