I finally put together a bamboo backed bow, and here it is...
66" nock to nock
53# @ 28"
Flipped the tips slightly after it was all glued up
Glued up with Unibond -800 (formerly Urac-185)
water buffalo horn overlays on tips and handle build up.
The strikeplate is inlayed ivory form old piano key tops
Rest is of cork topped with leather scrap
I had trouble getting the stained effect I wanted on the bamboo, so I gave up and instead applied shellac tinted with leather dye, and applied with a paint brush to get the black, then did used a little titanium oxide pigment in shellac dabbed on with a cheap little craft paint brush. When it was all said and done, I realized I had ripped off Weylin Olive's evenstar bow finish http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,40669.0.html
I hope you take it as a compliment Weylin :)
The arrows made for the bow are 30" BOP, 11/32" tail tapered to 5/16" nocks. Shafts are Douglas fir, from Surewood Shafts. 125 grn point on 65-70# spine, and these 550 grn arrows fly like darts out of this bow. I really like how this bow performs. I haven't shot it through a chrono, but I am guessing it surpasses any selfbow I have made.
While it does perform, I have to say that I like the process of building a selfbow much more than these glue-ups...but I might have to make a couple more...maybe I will learn to like it >:D

-

-
Very very nice.....

-
That's a super nice one there! Killer combo! I know what you are saying about the glue ups. They grow on you though. I think I will always be a selfbow guy at heart.
-
Thanks Matt! :) "Leather" art work? ???
Thanks Bushboy!
I appreciate it Huntrebob. Getting a good bend on these laminates is almost too easy ;)
Thanks bubby, Thanks Danzn Bar!
Yeah Will, the yew and bamboo seem to work pretty well together. I am sure it will grow on me. Part of it was having to struggle through the process as a beginner when I knew I could be working on stave bows with much more ease.
-
More great work Carson, well done
-
That is one hot looking bow! I really like the slender grip and the color scheme.
-
Wow that's awesome. Really smooth transition from the wood to horn.
-
She's a beaut. Really nice all round. Bamboo backed yes bows are a real feather in the hand.
-
Sorry Carson stupid auto correct. I meant lethal
-
Thanks Falcon!
Thanks Timbo!
Thanks Ryan!
Bowmo you are right about that. It is deceiving almost that something so soft and subtle in the hand can send an arrow down range with such authority. It is not a speed demon, but it shoots an arrow at speeds comparable to much more jarring fiberglass recurves.
That is not so bad of an autocorrect, it almost made sense. I have had some autocrrects that were way off in embarrassing ways ;D
Thanks for the nice comment. I hope for the recipient of this bow that it does prove lethal this fall.
-
Yeah, another gorgeous bow :)
Del

What a beauty Carson,
Pleasing to the eye, graceful and stylish good on ya. Chuck
-
This is excactly what i do with the yew you send me Carson.........the joys of living in Australia, where it is just too expensive to get full length staves!!!!!!
It does grow on you......
Beautiful bow mate, excellent......
Mick.
-
Very nice as we have come to expect from you. Love it. :)
Pappy
-
Breathtaking.
-
Thanks Del :)
Thank you Chuck!
Thanks Mick! Full length staves are overrated ;)
Thanks Pappy! Was just listening to Chad Slagle's music and the song Pappy's Workbench Great stuff!
Thanks Aries!
-
Ya I love Chad, very good friend great guy and singer/writer to boot. :) I miss him since he moved to OK. Again beautiful work you do. :) Pappy
-
Looks awesome! I have all the stuff prepped for a BBY bow, but I keep losing the fire and keep picking up staves. I should really get on er after seeing this guy
-
Oooh my, what a bow - that's a piece of art. I like your style Carson and the execution is perfect, super nice decoration too and the profiles what should I say - can be done better!
SEND IT TO ME !
Congrats on an other masterpiece.
-
Its a masterpiece! I really like the arrows too.
-
Really like the shape and style of this one. The horn on the riser is neat. Very nice work.
-
"AWESOME" is the best word I can come up with....AWESOME
-
That is a beautiful bow! I especially love the arrows! They look incredible. The over shape is the nicest part to me. Everything flows so well together.
-
Pappy, I only recently discovered Chad Slagle's music. Cant get enough of it. :)
Thanks Wizardgoat, yeah, this bow was in the works for a longtime. Once I finally got it all glued up, it was smooth sailing. I am looking forward to the wizardgoat take on the BBY :)
Thank you Simson. That is quite the compliment!
Thanks ajbruggink, hard to make bad looking arrows in black, white & silver
LittleBen, TolkienFan, the shape is the result of studying Dean Torges bamboo backed bows in his DVD, and also taking a close look at John Strunk's Bamboo backed bows.
I have to give credit to James Rempp for the horn on the handle. I saw this on a number of his bows and new there was no way I could not steal that idea at some point. :)
Thanks Arrowind!
