Title: Dog Wood bow.
Post by: Pappy on August 31, 2015, 05:21:10 am
Got my Dog Wood bow finished. Turned 62 nock to nock with very narrow tips 1 1/2 wide at the fads pretty much tapered to the tips with some slight narrowing, didn't have much wood to work with on this one  46@26 and shoot very nice. The skins look pretty cool. It had a bad knot in the top last 1/3 of the limb so I left it a little stiff but other than that I am very pleased. It is also backed the der rawhide for a deer I killed and the dog wood is off the farm. The skins came from A good friend in south GA. Big thanks to him, they seem to be pretty rare.

A few more. :) knot in top limb, and full draw. The sinew wrap was jut for the end of the snake skins, no real reason other than that. :) Hope you enjoy looking. :)

Coral snake on dogwood......now, that's a "Pappy Special" right there.  A dandy looking bow.  I really like the handle wrap and the image with the matching string & beads.  Sweet!

Very nice, Pappy. The coral snake skins make it really special.
Markus, Cornus is the Latin name for dogwood. Cornus mas is a European dogwood tree and Cornus cousa is an Asian dogwood tree. There are other shrub type dogwoods also. They make good arrows.

Looks very nice, Pappy.  Those skins are special I've only seen maybe 2 coral snakes in my 13 years of living down here.

Thanks Guys, it is a sweet shooter, not the fastest bow I have ever built but as I said very smooth/quite and hits where you look, so for now it's a keeper. :)If I build another I will probably make it a bit wider but on this is was all I had to work with due to a late night lay out and cut out. ;)

Not sure of the official name, we call it flowering Dog wood and it grows all over Tennessee. :)

That one turned out great Pappy!  I know that coral snakes are supposed to be native to our area but I don't think I have ever seen one in the wild.  They sure look good on your bow.

Very nice. What is the Latin name for Dogwood? I wonder if it grows over here? Markus

Latin name is cornus sanguinea. I assume you are European - cornus sang. grows everywhere in Europe.

Oh yeah, Pappy - she turned out as a beauty. Fine executed in every detail with incredible skins.

Thanks guys, thanks simson for the proper name, we just call it Dog wood and it grows everywhere. Hard to find a good straight piece, it mostly grows short and stubby but once in a while you can find a good one especially in smaller trees. :)

Real nice!  you must have thought very highly of it to use the skins on it. Surely not something you get to see everyday.
