Title: Some times you eat the bear.
Post by: Zuma on September 16, 2015, 01:15:43 pm
Quick story--- Monday-- Hunts with Stone calls and says "no time to stop
for hardstone gotta fly". Will be getting in late at hotel across the mountain.
Dern-- had a pretty good hunt planned. Oh well.
Humm, the gears started turning. I called Hunter and asked, if I met him
on the mountain (fog, deer, bears, and 2 dozen switch backs, no cell signals)
could he and the Mrs squeeze in an hour detour.
We made a plan to meet and run up a parallel valley, early morning.
Hunter and the Mrs are excellent navigators and both drive like angles.
Hell's Angles.lol
It was a glorious, cool late summer day.
Well things began to click. I called  Super Girl, Helena and asked if she
could acquire some greenstone and meet Hunter and I, at what I call
the jasper place thirty miles up valley.
The wheels were turning like a poker run. We took in the local color
and headed north down the South Branch of the Shenandoah River.
Jasper is pretty rare so when we arrived at the "place" the hunt was on.
Helena appeared out of the mist and laid hardstone at our feet.
Hunter and his bride made it home in time.

Zuma thanks again for making special arguments for us to get together. We all had a great time and it realy was a great day in the  Shenandoah Valley with friends. Wish you were there to P D. With thoughts of paleo fire cooking jasper and bear. Till next time.

Must be nice to head out on rock runs.  Here in Michigan it's sand runs in the summer and snow runs in the winter. Although the deer hunting is pretty good.

All's well that ends well, Glenn

No moss as long as you are running lol

As a native son, I'd love to work some PA jasper someday, nice haul.

zuma, what that means is you have rock runs to make because you have rock.  We don't have much rock but lots of Lake Michigan beach sand in the summer and lots of snow in the winter.  lol

In order to get PA jasper you have to be around some Berks Co.
road construction or talk to caveman. :D

Got ya Jeb, pardon my ignorance.
You could melt and dry the sand, then knap it >:D

Good lookin' stuff.  I went hiking on the AT in Shenandoah last summer.  Didn't see much that was knappable.

Parnell, my wife and I have backpacked parts of the AT as well including the soon to be banned northern terminus, Mt. Katahdin.  I wasn't into flint knapping back them but if I were, I would have been in trouble.  Even here in Michigan I look at rocks all the time hoping to find a point in them.

You were in greenstone territory. All the cherts have been erroded away.
Although there is a deep red material (we call it mountain red jasper).
In some of the the hallers. :D
Caution-- you can't remove anything from the National park. You can find alot
of imported artifacts and debitage but you go to jail if you even pick it up.
Oh you can take mushrooms. I hope you had a great time nevertheless.
If you plan on getting back sometime give a shout.

Well the results are in
Flakes 7 pound
Points 13 ounces lol.
I should really weigh these things
sometime. And count all the flakes.

Looking good there Don. Wish I could make time to knapp. There just isn't enough hours in a day right now.

Thanks Glenn
It looks like Pete and I are getting rained out Saturday
at Buckingham. And I am pretty sure I'll have some salt
on my tail for a while after Tuesday.
I hope you can get that honey jasper sawed up.
