Start with a brick of chert. :)
Then begin thinning :-\

Nibble away where ever you feel the need.
-
Make a bunch of coast to coasts and angle
flakes to remove square edge and thin.
-
Get rid of all your stacks and bumps. 8)
Switch to a smaller billet because the
tough stuff is complete. ;)
Hit the rock gingerly near the tip(arrow) :o :o :-[ :-[

Wala :)
-
I like it.
-
hah hah hah.
i had the same thing happen to me yesterday: started with a brick and ended up with a point smaller than the flakes i was taking off in the beginning. i photo documented it because i was doing well at first, but i couldn't rid the steps. the main difference was the point never broke; i percussed away at it until it was tiny.
-
Haha...a common theme in my knapping.
-
Beautiful point though! Even if it should have been the tip of a longer point... ::)
-
Thanks guys
Sorry for you to bowmo :'(
Yeah I will never photo that stuff again.
I always loose them. :'(
The break happened after (I) took a break to
help my neighbor fix his trailer hitch.
It was the very first tap when I returned. :'(
Worse yet is, I snapped the other half, in half too :embarassed: :embarassed:

you probably already know this but....
In the tip especially two little break flake will help detaich the flake. These flakes are placed at the top on each side of the platform and are pushed outward. I set these kinds of platforms up like flutes. The break flakes weaken the platform preventing a twist in the preform.

Thanks iowa :)
Just a little to complicated for this country boy.
Next time I put my glasses back on and see what
I am bopping. ???

Flakes are useful too ...
-
That looks real nice, makes it look easy :p
-
Humm... looks to me like there was only one point inside that rock when you started and the "break" was actually just a reduction to get down to the imbedded point. And you successfully removed it. Nice looking point!

Thanx Zuma and others
Seeing also you good knappers have this kind of issues partially give me comfort
My knapping routine seems to end almost ever in a pile of grit and dust with occasional artistic sprinkle of blood >:D
Today I was wondering about the swears used in ancient times.
You are in great necessity of a good blade, miles and miles away of knappable stones, sourrounded by vicious wild beast.
you are knapping your last piece of chert and suddendly CRAAAK .... ##@?@#!!!!
feel free to suggest some
It's archeology after all ;D ;D

If it wasn't for the gravel there would be no sand on the beach.
Here are a few of my classic abo artifact failures. I actually found
one the size of my open hand 40-50 yards off of the river bank while
diving . I could hear his/her shout when it was pitched.
It will all get better the harder you try and listen and watch.
No fun getting there all at once. Think of it as a journey Glis.
One I am still on.
