Title: Sinew patches over yew knots?

Got a fairly clean back on the yew ELB I'm making. Couple of ring violations here and there, but not too bad. Left extra wood around knots and pins (wider and islands). Shooting for around 85-90lb @30. Bow will be 81 inches long, so 80 inches nock to nock.

Was thinking about adding small sinew patches over the knots and pins for extra security? Not backing it, but just single layer small patches.


All help and advice would be awesome!!!!!!

In yew, if knots are solid they can be harder than the wood it self. If they are soft it's better to dig them out and fill with sawdust and glue. Yew can tolerate some gnarly stuff and still make good bows, but for higher weights its a bit of a gamble. Post pics for better advice.
Sinew patches could add some assurance, but would be kind of ugly in my opinion

Dug it out and filled with sawdust/resin, left an island of wood and gave extra width. Just want to be totally sure.

   Doesn't seem like the bow will be strained enough at that length/drawlength and comparatively low draw weight to warrant that.

90lbs@30 is still putting a lot of strain on the wood.

 At 80 inches it is not. A 90 pound pow could be almost a foot shorter before you could start thinking that.

No, to warrant putting patches on.  A bow doesn't really register that sinew is on the back until it is asked to actually take up some tension duty.

Personally I'd either leave it or take out a shallow scoop and put on a patch of Yew sapwood, for an almost invisible fix.

80" is massive for an English Longbow / Warbow.  Considering the MR bows were on average 160lb and usually under 75" nock to nock, making a 90lb bow 80" long is daft.
