Title: Plain Ol' Recurve
Post by: Stringman on December 07, 2015, 02:23:08 pm
I was asked if I could make a recurve and I told em "sure!" Since it was the beginning of hunting season I did warn them that it might take a while. But nobody seemed to be in much of a hurry so I took my time. I started on a couple staves that didn't feel right, so kept digging. Finally I picked a stave that had the right look and got to it.
(http://i1311.photobucket.com/albums/s670/cotton7611/9F6F0356-BEAB-4198-BE9A-D7B0038F3EBB_zpsghchzr2e.jpg) (http://s1311.photobucket.com/user/cotton7611/media/9F6F0356-BEAB-4198-BE9A-D7B0038F3EBB_zpsghchzr2e.jpg.html)

After drawing out the bow, I removed everything outside the lines and then refined it till it was floor tillered. The bow had a slight propeller twist that I wasn't concerned about, but knew it would need attention at some point. I paid close attention to the initial tillering because I knew once the recurves were in I would need it to be close or I would come in way under weight. So I went all the way to a low brace before heating the recurves in.
(http://i1311.photobucket.com/albums/s670/cotton7611/43A70118-36D5-4946-A0FA-F873821E718A_zpsitmi2gjy.jpg) (http://s1311.photobucket.com/user/cotton7611/media/43A70118-36D5-4946-A0FA-F873821E718A_zpsitmi2gjy.jpg.html)

Once I was satisfied with the initial tiller I corrected the limb twist, and then flipped the tips.

(http://i1311.photobucket.com/albums/s670/cotton7611/2210DDFB-104C-4AB6-936C-5AC49CCA41D0_zps9f2dgrv3.jpg) (http://s1311.photobucket.com/user/cotton7611/media/2210DDFB-104C-4AB6-936C-5AC49CCA41D0_zps9f2dgrv3.jpg.html)

Getting a string on it at this point is always difficult for me if I haven't done a good job on the initial tiller. When I finally did, I noticed the string alignment was still off. So I added string grooves and made 2 more small corrections before I was satisfied. I spent a full Saturday trying to get the bow under 55#. I felt like I had the tiller real close, but it shot like a dog! I pestered Chris for a couple hours trying to solve the problem. I was within 5# and didn't want to keep chasing the tiller so I quit for the night. That's when Chris pointed out that my brace height was too low and probably making it shoot so poorly. Next morning found me making a new string and my troubles were gone. 20 more scrapes per side and final sanding and she's shooting good! I added big horn to the tips and beeswax over everything.

Thanks, soybean... means a lot..  ;D

Eddie, it does take the right piece. I used to struggle a lot with the tension cracks when heat bending Osage.
