15 yards or less with a hickory bow, stave, that pulls 50 at 24.5. Learning my draw is shorter than 28, and learning to shoot huddled on the ground made the difference.
Thanks to all who share here; I learned much about bows.

Nice job, beautiful deer. :)

Congrats on that harvest. I hear those coues deer are difficult prey, had to be some stealth involved to make a kill on that buck with a selfbow. :)

I've heard all the same Greg. Read several stories describing them as ghosts. Congrats Mark! Wonderful primitive harvest.

congrats on your deer,, I read Jay Massey about 30 years ago,,,evolving from target stance to short floating anchor,,25 inches or so,, didnt quite understand at the time but 30 years later,, I shoot a short bow at about 24 inches of draw,, just took me a while to catch on,, :)

There are a lot of coues deer that know what an arrow sounds like whiffing underneath them because I thought the 27-28 draw working stiffly upright would transfer to hunting in semi open terrain. When I recognized that the left arm ( bow hand arm) pain was tennis elbow, I had to switch to drawing with my left hand. I built 41 lb bows, taped a sight (nail) and tried Olympic anchor type shooting. Did not work in Missouri's open marsh lands. I kept practicing left hand, ditched the upright stance and ad hoc sight, always remeasuring my draw, and got good at 15 and under with the pictured bow.

oh, and btw...once in the bucks' bedding zone, I had a shot but the first arrow hit something, and turned nearly parallel, slowing like a slow-motion semi truck wreck in a movie. Confused, that buck came with in 10 or so yards, trying to wind me. I had to reload out of my back quiver, and that motion caused the buck to move out at a walk. The second buck, the one I had stalked upon as I saw him bed at 250 yards in the snow and sleet, fed into and parallel tome. This buck#2 must have noticed the first buck's anxiousness, and when then second buck looked to move, I grunted low and only once. That seemed to settle the buck, and I released.
