I finished this bow a few weeks ago, but hadn't had the chance to take some photos of it until today.
I have a bunch of these sticks in the corner, anytime I cut some yew, and theres any decently clean branches over 40" i'll always take them home too.
They make such great bows, and are always full of character.
This branch was about 1.5" on the big end, and about 1" on the small end.
I would of normally used the reflexed tension side, but there was some sapwood rot and a funky knot, so I went with the compression deflexed side.
On these big deflex staves, I try to get a very heavy floor tiller and a perfect thickness taper soon as possible.
I steamed in small recurves, and it needed no heat corrections.
Rawhide wrapped tips, built up cork handle and leather, and the cottonmouth skin was from Bruce.
What better way to find a matching set than to split one down the centre.
finished with shellac and tung oil.
54" ntn, 1-1/8" wide for most its length.
55# at 25".
Cheers guys thanks for looking :)

-
Cool bow Goat. You are becoming one of our West Coast Bow Wizards.
...and who would have thought a 1x1 1/2" yew stick would make a 55# bow. Very well done! 8)
-

Very nice. Love the snake skins.

very nice work wizard, looks like you incorporated the natural deflex of the stave into the design well.
did you notice any negatives in using the compression side of the limb as the back?
thanks
willie

Very cool!skins and tiller look great and I dig that knot standing bravely!
-
The "Wizard" strikes again. Just nothing to gripe about with this bow. Love the way the skins graduate darker toward the ends. Fine, fine, fine!
-
Great looking bow. Love the copperhead skins. Excellent job!
-
Fantastic photo shoot, Great craftsmanship, Great Charticter Bow. John
-
I like how you took that skinny deflexed stave and made it into such a smooth bending bow, it has a nice profile with the recurved tips. Rawhide at the tips is cool and the snake skin back sets it off too. Nice bow Ryan.
-
Very cool, u can send that to me asap. Still have some deer season left here in michigan/ohio. I live on the border so i hunt in both states. But seriously awesome stik.
-
Beauty! Really like the photo setting as well and the way you handled the knot. Well done all the way around.
-
Ryan, you sure know what to do with yew. That thing is a gorgeous little killer.
-
Great job on that one Goat. Tiller looks beautiful.
-
cool bow with a nice bend!
-
Thanks for the very kind words guys. :) I'll probably hang on to this one for a while, 54/55" recurves for my draw length suit me well.
Forgot to mention, the photos were taken in Cypress Falls Provincial Park, one of my many playgrounds here.
Willie, I noticed nothing really different with using the compression side, it is quite crowned too.
It took less than an inch of set, but I'd thank the deflex for that. I'll put this one through the ringer and see how she holds up.
The broken branch use to be a few inches long with some dead needles on it.
I had it shooting, but I figured it would eventually break off and I'd rather it happen then. Was pretty cool though I wish I took a pi.

Beautiful as always Goat!
