Well just to make things completed …
Here is the finished bow from this buildalong (for those who are interested): http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,54838.0.html
Osage, 53“ long ntn, 56#/28“, sinewed with two layers, painted with earth pigments, no replica – just a short sinewed and painted static.
I did some scetches before I painted the bow

The f/d pics are not the best but only opportunity to do it outside …

Belly

I rubbed in some dark brown pigments in the finished dry painting and particularly sanded some paint of to get a 'used' look.
Here is the thunderbird motive on the upper limb:

And the lizard on the lower:

A sanding off at the edges can make some nice graphic effects:

On the sinew wrap are two different bright brown pigments, also slightly sanded – I like that look:
On the belly side are two identical hands one the lower and the upper limbs:

I found a nice leftover of a stingray leather, just enough to fit the handle. I rubbed in some brownish earth pigments to get to match with the painting. A light sanding over all brought out the bone pearl of this wonderful material:

Oh wow...speechless....absolutely love it all. What kind of handle wrap do you have there sir?
-
You are one talented dude, Simon.
-
Killer lil bow simon!!! :)
-
Now that is paying attention to detail. Love it!
-
This a great job!
But why did you sinew back it? If limbs are such wide, I would never back a bow made of such an excellent osage stave, any backing will decrease its performance.
Michael
-
Outstanding sir. I really like the art work.
-
Man Simon great job😀
-
Very, very COOL Simon. 8)
-
Awesome bow and the finish work is perfect! Great job as always!
-
Your artistic ability shows in your tillering also. Great job on that one!
-
That is a beautiful tiller for a beautiful bow! Jawge
-
Great looking bow and artwork!
-
Another work of art!awesome!

Michael
It is outstanding in every way.
Michael, the overdraw relative to length makes the sinew worth its weight. You probably won't be drawing many 53 inch selfbows 28 inches too many times.
-
Thanks for your nice compliments! It was really fun to make this one. It took a bit long time, but was worth the long run - it turned out as a super smooth draw and fast bow.

It is stingray leather with paint inbetween the bone pearls
This a great job!

Hans
-
Beautiful! Impressive in every way.
-
That bow is ridiculous!
Did you process the stingray leather yourself or buy it / trade for it already tanned?
-
Geez Simon, opening a thread of yours when you're posting a new bow has become such a treat. Your work and skills are most inspiring. Thanks for sharing and being a part of PA.
-
Getting a little artistic on us are you??? :)....Sweet bend on that one simon....love it.

Man Simon your talent is in a league of its own. Every detail you put into that bow looks great and works perfectly as a compliment to every other detail in the bow. As a whole it all pulls together to make a beautiful work of art and function.
I'll be coming back to view this one often. :)

Georgeous.
-
Simply amazing once again Simon. I really like everything about this one, the tiller, the paint, the handle, every aspect.
-
Great craftsmanship & artwork. John

patM, anyway the backing the amount of bending is the same!
The same bow drawing the same weight at 26" or 25" would perform much better without any backing.
Maybe we should open another topic: selfbow- overdraw?

Wish such bows could be drawn to 33"... or can they? Don't try! But I would really love one like this at my draw length... ..
I really like it, the painting and everything
With sufficiently heavy arrows, this would perform better than without a backing
-
Unbelievable Wow !!
-
Just a work of art is all I can say simson with the functioning of it amazing too.You take top notch pictures also. How does it shoot for ya?
-
Man that has to be the sweetest little bow I have seen.
-
Great work Simon.
-
That is just a WAY KILLER bow, Simson! Cool, cool, cool!

No, I did purchase that piece (leather) at a flee market

I'm pretty sure 30" is possible, but not 33". Are you a warbow shooter, or are your arms hanging down to the knees? ;)
Many thanks again, Gents I really appreciate your comments!
-
Beautiful bow in every way. Very nice work. :)

What everybody else has already said.....that is stunning in every respect.
-
Amazing bow! Great bend and incredible artwork. Thanks for the great photos.
-
Wow, I love the layout of this bow, and the art work is the icing on the cake. I really like that you added your sketches of the design in your photo's. It shows how idea's are developed into something tangible.
Well done!
Ed
