Title: working hard on the flint knapping exhibit
Post by: iowabow on March 12, 2016, 08:47:43 pm
I will be posting abo points again as soon as I finish building the exhibit. BTW the museum ask if I would organize a knapin in the fall. I am also working with them to establish a collection of modern produced lithics. I am still working out details. Due to the smaller scale of this exhibition I could only include a few knappers but the collection can involve many more people. Is there an intrest with these ideas?

Here is a picture of the wall and in the back ground the base. The metal plate will be the layers that points will be attacked to with magnets

Just too close to ignore! If the timing is right, I will be interested. Will they be open to copperheads as well?

That's great Scott!
Yes it would look like other events with all forms of knapping.

excited to see the exhibit finished. From what I have seen from your work it will be grand. I wish I lived closer, would certainly be at the knap-in but I have to pick my locations and Flint Ridge won this year. If you will be there I will try to look you up.

Reader rail goes on  today for a dry fit before painting begins. Matt put the cabinet together from the wood I chainsaw cut and planed. All the trim has been sanded and stained. Matt is coming over to help with the technical stuff (he is a master at Wood working ). Matt is also a bow builder.

Hats off to you for supporting a museum.  Museums are like windows that help us see into a world much bigger than the world that we know.  Along with the lithics you may want to consider showing photos of flakers, and hammerstones, that are routinely found in American archaeological sites.  I have a few flaker photos around, if you need some.  The records of flakers span from the advent of the archaic era, in many areas, right into the proto-historic era.  Some flaker types are commonly recognized, and some are not.  By the way, the woodwork is amazing.  I could never use handtools, very well...Lol.

they ask for an ABO exhibit of points. Most of the stone used for making the points came from my creek and the wood trim, reader boards, and cabinets are made from that lumber that I cut with the chain saw mill three or four years ago.

Thank you A.T. I cut, planed, sanded, and stained all of the wood work and made all of the trim and reader boards and my friend Matt, who is also a member and bow maker built the 8 foot tall cabinet from this Wood also. The projectile points in this exhibit took me  1 1/2 years to make and will include the works of many other knapper across the USA.

I wonder who painted the background in the diorama that you can see in that photo?   O:)

I am now wondering if I should dress differently when ABO knapping....just a loin cloth and a pair of mocs.

Great diorama....

It's in Burlington, Iowa.  It's about as far south and east as you can get and still stay in Iowa.

Thanks, I went with the magnet idea that the display could be rotated and interchangeable. Thus will give the musuem the flexibility to tell the story in different ways.
