Title: new hackberry (european) D bow
Post by: dantolin on March 28, 2016, 06:08:16 pm
Hi all
It's been a while since I don't post some bows.
Here is one of my latest, a simple D bow coming from a sapling near 2" at base and near 1"1/4 at top end.
It's 65"ntn, 41# at 26" (or 44# at 27")
It has a 8 strands linen string, 2 coats of linseed oil, 5 of shellac and a final mix of oils with wax.

Unbraced profile:

Thanks Okie :)

I forgot to say that it is 1" 3/8 at widest, with a slightly narrowed arrow pass (1"1/4).

Bye :D

Beautiful bow sir, mighty fine work. Hackberry has become a top wood choice for me. Again nice bow.

I really like that.
Is that the pith I can see down part of the centre of the belly?  Is the belly generally flat?  Did you leave the back as the round under-bark surface?
I've cut a couple of black wattle (Acacia decurrens) and bluegum (Eucalyptus globulus) saplings of a similar size to play with and am considering something similar for them once they're a bit drier.

Great, nice bit of character.
I like the rock outcrop... looks a bit like a grumpy guy watching you shoot

Yes, it is the pith, Cadet. I remove it with a hot awl as soon as I see it appearing while I'm working on the belly side.
Yes, for sapling bows I always let the belly flat (with rounded corners) and the back as round as it is, even I round more than in the belly side the corners that appear (I try to make lower limb back relief similar to upper' limb...at least in sapling woods as conical as hackberry)
Go for that black wattle bows waiting for you under those staves, Cadet :D !!!

Great looking bow!  I'm gonna have to build one out of hackberry.  I've got about 10 staves that are a year plus into drying.  Do you toast your belly?  Great bow.  I'll bet it's a real shooter.

Great bow from such a little tree!  Little set, excellent bend, gorgeous belly character.

A wood I favor.

A design I adore.

And photo in front of a standing stone.

You are exhibiting everything I like, with the exception of a pretty red haired girl!

Hi! No, I don't teat belly. I try to get it as dry as possible before working on it, but I donnot toast it :)

I am another hackberry fan. I like the design you chose, it came out very nice. I always look forward to working a hackberry stave, I think on my future bows I will follow your lead and go a bit narrower with more working limb, that came out great.
