Used to use these long time ago. Take a 4" By 1/2 piece of branch and rip it.
Wittle out 1/2 in from the end to the center until about a 1/6" hollow on both pieces.
take a rubber band and sandwich it between the 2 pieces, apply Hide Glue to one end And wrap with sinew tite.
now pull the rubber band on the other end and blow until desired tone is achieved.
Glue and wrap that side. there ya have a Quail call.
darn photo sharing messed up my build along so I did it over.
now try to Make the sound Chekeeta While blowing through the call.

when i was younger I called them in and shoot them with a bb gun. I could call them in just with my mouth. by whistling an mimicking there mating call. It would bring them right in range.
-
Did the same thing when I was young with a 22 rifle. Whistle 'em in . They are fast but not over cautious.
-
yeah the male call was a series of two whistles and a females was three. I always used the male call the females would come to mate the males would come to defend their territory. I would just sit there any call back and forth. Man I wish I had that kind of time now.
