Title: Arrow Trade
Post by: Trapper Rob on August 09, 2016, 01:02:50 pm
Who's in for the arrow trade this year?
Post here if your in.
You make one arrow or as many as you want to send don't matter the material.
Spine & length depends on if your guy hunts or displays it .
The 20th I'll draw names.
Would 3 weeks after I draw names be long enough for everybody to make your arrow?
Due date will be Sept. 12th

This is the names I have so far if I leave somebody out leave me know.

Guess I was asleep at the switch and missed this previously.

What are the guidelines?

Number? 1 or 6 or 12?

Spine?

Length? etc.

Inquiring minds....

Usually a hunting arrow BJ, but honestly? Anything you feel like making is fine. Store bought, hand planed, shoot shaft, store bought blade, knapped head, its all good. Its just a simple arrow swap with no rules.

I'm in if its 1-3 arrows it'll probably be a red osier with a stone point that I'd love to see someone harvest an animal with. Sounds like fun

I'd like to get in also. I'm planning on making two arrows, one sourwood and one hill cane. Not sure of other details yet.
In these arrow trades I like to make what I usually use for hunting or target arrows. If you normally make store bought arrows then that should be fine, if you make cane or hardwood shoot arrows then make one or more of them. I don't think this trade is about making a set of perfectly matched arrows. It is about making and sending one of "your" arrows, whatever that may be.

Making just 1 arrow a fella can put a lot of bling on such a stick.Might be fun.Have to wait to see what your victim wants....kind of wood/spine/weight/type of nock/type of point/type of fletching etc.Anything I'm missing here????

are you going to collect addresses and other stats like in the bow and Christmas trades?  If so, I am shooting a 55# bow @ 29" of draw.  Don't know if I would shoot the gifted arrow, but it would be nice to know I could.

I might be busted up but I can muster out a nice bamboo arrow for a trade. So count me in. I have no knaping abilities but I have some nice arrow heads I have picked up on the farm over the years I can use.

That would make a really special arrow gutshoot. The spirits in that head could hunt again, wouldn't that be awesome.

I'm in. Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I had my trade bows come in underweight and I've been trying to jam out a couple bows in a hurry.

I'll either make 1 arrow with 3-4 different fore shafts(swiss army arrow) or a just a nice matched set of 3(two hunters and a practice).

I'm in,  I'm not a master arrow Smith but when I make some they shoot pretty darn good! The best part about this is that it doesn't have to be daylight to work on an arrow.  And that's a good thing because all of my daylight hours are full for a while.

Does'nt a person need to know what a recipient wants for weight and spine before they are made?????

Ed I was thinking I'd wait for info on who they are for too. Maybe not place to ask but if I understand correctly spine should be about 5 lbs lighter off handle than center shoot? I've  made all my bows close to center so far.

BJ, 5# to 10#
I normally don't shoot my trade arrows. They go in my collection.
The arrows I made for this arrow trade are one hill cane and one sourwood shoot arrow. Both being fully tapered shafts makes them more draw weight tolerant. These should shoot from bows 45# to 60#. I'll shoot them before I send them out in case my recipient wants to hunt with them.

I'm like Pat I don't shoot my trade arrows they go in a quiver.
If I counted right were up to 21.
Mullet are you in?

Title: Re: Arrow Trade
Post by: BowEd on August 15, 2016, 08:27:24 am
Yes that's for shoot shafts.Over here I've got quite a variety I've experimented with.Ash,walnut, honey locust, maple, douglas fir [parallel shafts, one barreled and all a little more finicky about spine],and the tapered more forgiving shoot shafts are dogwood, sourwood, & hazel.
Maybe I'm making this more complicated than it should be.

I never shoot mine or intend to. I have a half rack elk shed they balance on. Ed I think I you wanted to, a 28-29" 50-55# spine arrow would cover about 80% of us.

Post by: bjrogg on August 15, 2016, 08:51:38 am
That's kinda what I was thinking of making Pearl. Whoever gets mine doesn't have to shoot it but I'm sure I will, I haven't made one yet I didnt. Just can't help myself gotta do it.🤔

Any arrows made ought to be shootable. If it don't shoot well it ain't an arrow.   ;)

Kind of like the wall hanger bows. Just because you know it isn't a shootable bow, doesn't mean someone down the road will also know that.

That reminds me of a project a kid made in my silver smithing class. It was a necklace based on the medieval torture device called the iron maiden. It had rows of spikes facing toward the neck and the tips just about touched. If it were worn it would result in death. We got into a heated debate on whether or not it was jewelry at that point. I was of the opinion it was more along the lines of sculpture or even a weapon since it couldn't actually be worn. Well worn more than once anyway.
