Title: Killin time
Post by: cowboy on March 02, 2008, 08:48:46 pm
We finally caught a break on the job here in Laredo. Whilst having a few brewskies and "killin time" I showed the guys some stuff about knapping. After awhile one of them challenged me to make a Chinese throwing star - I'd thought about it before but never done it. He wanted a four pointed one but I only saw three in that rock. Made a tommy hawk head for one guy and several other things - their all happy campers now. Should get a lot of work out of em tomorrow ;D. Oh yeah, one of em envited me to his place in OK to haul off some bodark - has ten acres to clear and he says it's all osage, great - I always get myself into these lovely messes :D.

Thanks all, on the knapping! It just gets in your blood after awhile ;D. Now I'm rolling all kinds of weird idea's around in my head, hmm - what else might one make :D............

I wasn't planning on hauling a trailor to Pappy's but may have to with Bodark, was going to bring a load of this TX flint already. I'm going to check this guys ten acres out and if theres anything worth cuttin - billet length, whatever - I'ma gittin it ;D. Said he's dozing it down anyway and planting some kind of purty trees....

Paul:  Is that some rock that you picked up on the job site, or do you carry a supply of heat treated rock with you when you travel?  Those are very nice, and if you worked it raw, very, very, very nice.   ;D.

That's just too cool, Paul. Now you gonna make one with a 6" Folsom stickin' out of the rock?  >:D ;D
Title: Re: Killin time
Post by: cowboy on March 03, 2008, 06:36:04 pm
That's how you might start one Mike - gives ya a better purchase on the stone while working on the point :D.
As a matter of fact - I got started on another one and had Folsom in mind, but that rock needs a little heat :P. Did make another handy dandy utility knife...
Allright, I'm outa here - my butt has become as one with the chair, 50mph desert winds have about heat treated me, and I'm bleadin everywhere :'( ;D.

While your pickin up some wood in OK do you think you can look arround for some hedge apples? I'm going to be growing a lot of Ossage on my property here in WA. I think it will make great hedge rows and lots of nice bow wood in the future!

David T.

PS: Sorry, forgot the box this morning but will get it off tomarrow. Got some nice brown, lace, and rainbow obsidian all ready for ya!

David: The apples all fell in the fall - I haven't seen any whole ones around in awhile. If I do though, I'll load up a bucket...

Cowboy, where do you get all the flint ? is it growing wild down there or do you go someplace to get it ? we don't have much around here... from the looks of things you don't need much free time to knap out a point bro... you seem to have it down to a art... you done the ancients proud ;D  Hawk...a/ho

Post by: cowboy on March 05, 2008, 10:36:58 pm
Mike: I get most of my flint just SW of San Antonio, it actually is kinda wild :). It's farmland and just looks like a feild of plowed up potatoes - dissapears over the horizon (depending on far down the hill you are :D).

Mike, you would be even more impressed if you tried to knapp some of the stuff that Paul works on. Hardest, toughest, nastiest most awnery rock I have ever had the misfortune to cross yet! Of course I have not heat treated it yet! Sledge hammers are suggested for the small stuff, in my humble opinion!  ;D

Paul, did mention it works better with a little heat!   >:D
