Title: Marshall shoot trade blanket suggestion
Post by: osage outlaw on September 18, 2016, 07:15:50 pm
I just attended a small trad shoot where they have do a different style of trade blanket.  The trade involved about 16 guys.  They all sit in a circle around a blanket (tarp).  One guy starts it off by laying an item or two on the blanket up for trade.  Everyone takes turns laying down what they would offer for his item or you can pass on the trade.  Once it gets back to the guy who laid down the original item he can look at all the offers and choose which one he wants to make a trade for.  He can also decide to pull his item and no trade is made.  It's a very organized and entertaining way of doing a trade blanket.  I think it took us an hour and a half to complete it.  There was a lot of teasing and joking among the guys.  It's really a fun time.  Some people brought lots of little stuff to trade and other people brought larger items like bows and guns.  They don't limit the items to hunting stuff.  There were tools, meat grinders, camo clothing, fishing stuff, and all different kinds of goodies.  If you trade for an item you can turn around and trade it for something else.  One guy officiates the trade to keep it running smoothly.

Would you guys want to give this a try at Marshall next year?  I think the crowd we have would be a good size to do this kind of trade.  We have plenty of time to start gathering up items or making stuff to trade.  I bet we all have some hunting stuff and bow supplies that we probably won't ever use.  Maybe you could trade it to someone else who might need it.  Let me know what you guys think.

I like that idea Clint sounds like fun, I'd be up for that format at Marshall.
By the way were you able to to trade for another pearly bow at your shoot this weekend? ;)

I tried Greg but the deal fell through.  The guy wanted 2 finger tabs and a bow string for it.  That seemed like a steep price   ;D

Clint , I think you have something cool here.................
I have seen this trade blanket @ Scottsburg done for several years....it gets better year after year....It is more of a primitive type of trade blanket.... something you would have seen in the early 1800's.  as the trade goes, everyone has a chance to see everyone's trade items and trade for them.  It is really neat if everyone is patient enough to see what everyone has to trade.  It is a much better format than the "flea market" experience......

Clint, I'll be glad to help coordinate the Trade blanket @ Marshall next year if the club is OK with it.......

I think once the participants understand the game they will really enjoy it......
What is one mans treasure is another mans stuff......it really works.....

I suggested this at Twin Oaks one year, as, this is how we do it at shoots in Florida. We used to do it after the shoot on Saturday night around the fire.A lot of funand beverages passed around.

Better watch your mouth Homer, my bows are easily worth two worn out LH finger tabs and a semi-new 16 strand B50 string.

You know I'm game for this style blanket. An early warning like this gives us plenty of time to collect wares.

That's good Aaron, I think I should have some left. I already gave up 2 this year that weren't tanned. They really are pretty and have such soft fur. There hides are much thinner than coon though. I'm hoping for some snakes skins, real nice stone, maybe some osage. I'd even be interested in some tree stands or hunting supplies. Lots of stuff I need yet. Don't just write off the rats, they are beautiful winter rats and nice big ones too.

Guy I'm not sure right now cause I didn't sell any raw fur at all this year. Last year I gave it away and just wasn't going to do that again this year. In fact I bought some fur from my buyer this year and I'm thinking I might talk to him about some more maybe. If I remember right I think he had tanned red fox hides hanging on his wall for $80. I could be wrong but that's what's in my head. I'm thinking something here is going on the benefit auction. It might be a finished product though if I can manage my time good enough.

I decided I'm going to bring the fox off my wall in the house. You all might have to barter with my wife if you want them. I got all kinds of flack when I said I was gonna hang em there but I'm sure I'll get even more when I take em down. I can probably get more this winter though. I also have a bunch of primary turkey feathers, and dried fan tails, some sinew and maybe some HHB staves. I'd be happy trading for snake or possibly fish skins, hunting gear, hang on tree stands, Osage, stone anything cool. Can't wait to see you all.

I don't think so....after that Moon Tree Hackberry Recurve....We'll be calling you the "King" of hackberry and I'll have one already.  That is a very nice bend for a shorty hackberry recurve.

I think we're gonna have to plan on more time for the next one. I think it's going to be pretty popular, better than Chinese Christmas Exchange. Probably be some funny stuff in there to.

I agree BJ, next year will probably see many more participants and many nice goods. I am already planning what to bring.

Now that I know better how it works, Ill be loaded up next year. I felt like a fool with nothing but an old target bow to offer. I did end up with two lifetime supplies of nocks :)

Glad the Clintster stuck with this idea and made it come off. It'll be great addition to Marshall's event schedule.

Speaking of schedule, may need better way to communicate/promote event schedule.

I kinda agree with you there knoll. I like the lose schedule and not feeling required to do something all the time but I was really bummed I missed the mini bows last year and I don't think we even did the bear accross the pond this year. It still was a blast though.

Lets keep the trade blanket on Friday evening next year.  There's to much going on during the day on Saturday.

If you guys can remind me, I will make a few down and dirty poster board signs to hang in the pavilion. Maybe one up at the registration table as well.

We are going to keep this trad event on the schedule for Fri nights and  we are putting together a whole new schedule as normally we would have done our first go at the bear during this time slot
We will definitely have a bear across the pond shoot right after dinner Saturday night  till to dark to hunt arrows and another slot as well but that's about all I will reveal for now
We were going to do posters but nobody keeps track of what time it is anyway so we didn't but have to for all we have planed for next year
I think we came up with setting y'all we be excited about during a bit of a planning gathering  Sunday and even gave one of the ideas a trial run afterwards
Be ready to roll next year for the 25th anniversary

Nina's sales team let everyone on the property know about the lemonade for sale.  Maybe we should put her in charge of reminding everyone when an event is about to take place.

Sort I missed it. This is my first year involved in any of the Trad Archery forums and it's been difficult to arrainge these trips into my schedule. Next year will definitely be different though.

As for the trade blanket, we do them this way at all the Pow Wows and it works great. I look forward to next years'.

Now there you go just make sure she is here and I won't have to buy a PA system
Just what we need but hope we can afford her high prices LOL
Guess I better start nogotiations now !!!
What do you say Nina?
I think you best get her signed up for her own  user name so your inbox is not blowing up Pauly
