Title: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: Tower on October 02, 2016, 09:48:01 am
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a BITH
A medium flat rate box of stone swap?  It's been a few years since we have done it.
Would anyone be interested?

You know I love shipping my obsidian and dacite! I'm in for 2. Gotta make room for my trip next spring to the buttes.

This is looking like a pretty short list.
The name drawings looking pretty simple

I'll leave it up another week before we swap

So I would just fill a medium FR box --which is what, like 12 or 15 dollars full of rock and then someone would send me one too?  I have obsidian.  Mostly pretty lumpy, but definitely workable.  would that qualify?

I'd play, but I'm a little low on supply.

Nothing wrong with a lil obsidian or dacite .
It's all about the trading of lithic materials

Count me in then, but I need some advice on how to pack it so the obsidian doesn't beat itself to pieces before it arrives.

I am a newbie. What does PITH. stand for?   Can I participate? I have heat treated small pedernales and some flint ridge heated in the turkey roaster. Probably some obsidian

PITH  stands for Point in the hat. It's a point swap we seem to do every spring.
Your more that welcome to join in on the BITH.
The more the merrier.

i wish I had some rock that was worth a hoot, everything I have left looks like it has concrete mixed in it. Even I don't want to work it, but it may find its way into my junk pile.

Don Ive been on the fence to join or not. Do we send a bunch of the same or a mixed lot? How does the crowd prefer? Should we wait and ask our recipient, or just send blind?

I'm going to send a mixed lot of what I like to knap. Kind of a sample of Centeral Texas material . I'm ok with you asking your recipient.  If it were me a big box of your Burlington would be just fine.

Ho ho it's Xmas time!!!    Got my box from Mullet today!!!!    It's about as round as they come but his killer tape job held!!!   It's full of ???   I got to figure this out, there are preforms in it, some really nice big snapped blades that are very wild colored and will make short knives or big arrowheads. I like these a lot!!!  LOL I think some flint ridge, then from there I am lost!!!  LOL There are gray, white, black, brown, rootbeer???   Then there is pink, red, orange, spotted, I tell you a lot of rocks, spalls, preforms, almost finished pieces that snapped but I will be able to pressure flake them to finish very nicely!  Then there is a giant hunk of maybe coral?  Another really big piece that has lumps like . I think it might be pedernales or some form of Texas flint because it has a really thick cortex. There is also a possibility it's rootbeer color. Awesome box of goodies! Thank you Mullet!#!

Now the problem, I can't send pics to flicker or photobucket. I can email them from my Samsung S5 cell phone. Or I can text them from the cell phone. Could I get a hand with this by asking one of yall to let me send you the pics and get you to put them in this thread. Somewhere on here it says to post pics of what you got. I do want yall to see these!!#

Thanks, Bill
Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: mullet on October 20, 2016, 09:41:45 pm
Glad you like it, Bill. The big piece in the bottom is a coral head. The rest is and assortment of what I have. The rootbeer is Florida chert that you normall don't find enough to knap but once in a while I drill at the limerock quarry and pick through the spoil pile during lunch. Enjoy ;D
Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: Orrum on October 20, 2016, 11:42:06 pm
Hey Mullet thanks again, it's a great assortment!   The big rootbeer is special!   I can't wait til 2moro afternoon when I get back from the doctor, I am gonna try one of those pretty snapped blades! Maybe a rounded skinner with a gut hook? Yes!!!

Hope you can do better with it than I can.  I start out with a big rock and end up with a MUCH smaller rock--if I am lucky, some of them end up a little pointy-shaped.  Please share what you can get out of it, to give me something to shoot for.

Received a box of so much awesomeness from Orrum I dunno if I can do justice with pictures. Petrified wood and coral as well all sorts of other nice rock. Super excited to start making points from that stuff. And then I got my box from Scott filled with goodies Burlington and hornstone. Sadly though his box looked as though USPS threw it out of a moving truck and they "repackaged" it but a few rocks now resemble gravel. Kinda sad about that especially because it happened at the boxes last stop before being delivered to me!

Hey Tracker glad you like your box! I was afraid I would send rocks and slabs that were not good. TRY that Owhyee Mountains cooked slabs of picture jasper from the Wild Horse Claim! I love them!

I received my box of goodies from Tracker.  Its a mix of obsidian, dacite, and what appears to be a piece of chert. Thanks Tracker I cant wait to try them out.

That chert to the best of my knowledge is Owl Creek Yellow. Found it while I was in Texas by following some old archeological maps in an area that used to be a rock hound picking spot.

I hope I can do them justice.  I'll post pics tomorrow

Thank You
Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: 1442 on November 13, 2016, 12:36:02 pm
Glad it made it Tower,
That box contained all raw landscape gravel from my local Taco Bell, hardware store, convenience store, and even the landscape suppliers around here.
The two bifaces is some I had skint and threw in there too.
Some people say it needs heat treating but I mostly work it raw.

I had pics of the rocks I got from Tracker0721, but I can't find them, I'll keep looking.
In the mean time, I got a new blade on my saw and figured I'd be smart to saw slabs and get the most I could from the big chunks he sent me. The one is mahogany obsidian and the other one is black with silver grey stripes. This is all I got sawed so far and I will try to work a point out of each kind today just for fun.
I done tried bifacing a couple of the dacite pieces he sent and they didn't survive.

I worked a black slab. It broke multiple times before I finaly swaped to a fine abrader and real sharp pressure flaker and took a lot of care with it.
I got a point but I was wore out by then. I thought obsidian was supposed to be easy.
Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: 1442 on November 14, 2016, 03:16:37 am
I rough shaped a preform out of the butt cut of the mahogany obsidian and went to work on it with a small bopper then switched to pressure to finish.
I don't know if I was just handling the obsidian better or if this stuff flakes better, but this point went pretty smooth and didn't give me no trouble like the black one. Well it did loose a ear off a notch like the black one, but this seemed like stronger material than the black stuff.

Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?

Obsidian can be easily bent went working snd snaps easily then. You have to support the back against your hand or leg or whatever method you use. The rainbow from Davis Ca is very shatter prone if from the wrong area. I am the king of bending my preform and therefore breaking it. LOL
Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: 1442 on November 16, 2016, 01:00:55 am
I turned the black slab in the saw and got some bigger slabs.
Worked this first one during breaks at work today
Bifaced it with a copper bopper then pressured with a ishi stick

This seems to work better. It's cut on a different plain than that first black slab.

Title: Re: Flint trade BITH?
Post by: 1442 on November 16, 2016, 04:45:21 pm
Thanks
I am real new to flaking like this, but it works well to thin and shape and just forms the contours almost automatically.
I struggle with a smooth preform to pressure flake, then use up a lot of width pressure flaking, but I think a smooth preform and keep platforms close to centerline are real important.

I gotta take off outa town a few days. I'll be bacck

I just got a beautiful box of rocks from Redhand.  It's a fantastic variety of pieces from big slabs to flakes, and everything in between.  There are also some really nice preforms that just need final flaking and some cool blue aquarium glass I can't wait to try.  There are a bunch of new challenges in here for me.  I am a little afraid to mess them up, but I will give it my best.  Thanks so much, and thanks to tower for setting it up.
