Used up my last "easy" :o stave. This one was pretty strait, a bit of character in the upper limb and some natural deflex about mid upper limb. I left everything pretty much as is, I did toast the belly lightly, and a bit heavier in one spot near a knot (thinking it would make that area just a bit stiffer) because I am tired of little compression fractures showing up next to knots in my guava bows >:(.
This one is a bit different design than I usually go after. It has a fairly crowned back, so I attempted to make the belly match the crown. It seemed like science.
It is longer than I usually make em. This one is 69in nock to nock, It pulls 54lbs at 28inches. This is the fastest shooting selfbow I have made. Grip is made from a thrift-store purse and a boot lace.
Silencers are raw wool from a big island sheep hunted last year.
It took a bit of set on the lower limb, maybe an inch or so. The upper limb looks to have more set, but it started with some deflex to begin with, so its hard to tell how much the upper limb moved.

The shelf is built of leather and superglue stacked up and cut to shape then glued on.

These guavas seem like a real good bow wood, sadly it seems they are not common choice for bowyers.

Rain Bows. I am going to spend the afternoon shooting it and trying to get some good matched up arrows then its hog time!
Chris3kilo, just do it man. You are going to ruin a lot of wood in the process but thats learning. I cant tell you how many boards and staves I broke. Shoot. I still break plenty!
Stalker- In hawaii Guava is EVERYWHERE if you can find a strait piece it will make a fine bow! It is invasive so people are trying to get rid of it. I learned from Manny (Nomadic Pirate). He is the one who put me on to strawberry guava. If you do a search on this site, there is a thread where Manny tries to break a pretty heavy guava bow and he draws it back on the tillering tree to something like 44 inches. It took loads of set, but never went bang. Guava is a great bow wood.

One more thing... First real target session went pretty well. Tagged this guy at 9 yards on the walk out. First blood on the first session. Good luck in this guava stick id say...

That bow looks good! Does Guava respond to heat treatment? It grows down here in S Florida but I don't know if its the right species.
What's that critter? Be fun to do a hog hunt there someday, I was born on Oahu but we left when I was 1. Never have been back...yet.

Parnell its a mongoose.. and yes guava responds well to heat treatment. I have been told that strawberry guava is the guava of choice. it has small bright red fruits about the size of a pingpong ball. I have worked with yellow guava wood before too. I honestly have not made enough bows of similar design out of each to tell the difference. Use what you can get and lets us know how it works out!

OK. I have a bit of a problem. I cannot figure out arrows for this bow. Everything I have is too stiff. I cannot put enough weight on my 500 spine carbons, and shooting carbons out of a selfbow seems a bit silly anyway. Please shoot me some recommendations on woodies or bamboo shaft materials.

Some 30" 50-55's with 125 upfront should fly like darts for you.

If you want cheap and easy? Kustom King sells finished and crested POC shafts for $47 a dozen, and the nock end is tapered already. You cant build them that cheap.

I have Dip Tubes if you want to do them up yourself. Also plenty of feathers (all right wing though) in red and yellow.

Pearl Drums: 50-55 spruce shafts at 30 inches with a 145 grain ribtech broadhead is the combination!! thanks for the recommendation. flying like laser beams. Gonna go get a goat or pig this weekend hopefully!
