Evening All,
I've been reading up online on ELBs and sometimes come across the term 'Standard Man' in regards to ELB length but can't find anyone who actually says how tall a standard length English longbow is. Any one able to help?

I've never heard the term "standard man" but I'd make an ELB at least 68" and probably longer, depending on your draw length.

I've always been told a proper ELB has to at least as long as the archer is tall.

Ignore the standard man... never heard of such a thing ... it's tosh.
As a good rule of thumb, height of archer plus maybe 2" but for warbows you can go up to about 80"
As a guide I'd say 70" will be a good length for a medium heavy weight at 28"
You could go a bit shorter for a shorter archer, shorter draw or lower poundage.
For 32" draw I'd go at least 74" and for 32" heavy weight I go a long as possible.

I never make 'em longer than the stave I have in my hand ;)

I'll add that I like to make my bows about 4" taller than then stave. Just to keep those tips reeaally light weight ;D

When making bow longer than the stave, does that cause any issues with stringing it? I've tried it, and the dag gum string doesn't seem to stay put.

Wrong glue, Eric. When you splice air unto a yew stave you need a good two-part epoxy to hold anything.

I'll add that I like to make my bows about 4" taller than then stave. Just to keep those tips reeaally light weight ;D
So you have stave 70" long but you make bow from it 74" long? Sounds awesome, what is your technique of substituting wood where there is no wood, black magic? ;)

I asked my friend and she says that the standard man should be around 6 inches. I don't know what to make of that; it must be her mushroom usage.
