I am looking to make my first possibles bag. Im looking for inspiration, im hoping that you all will take the time to post some pictures of your possible bags. And maybe a shot discription on how you put them together. Thanks!
Patrick
-
Patrick, Google possibles bags. Lots of pics there.
When I'm making a bag of any sorts I use a saddle stitch(2 needles, one on each end of the thread and going through the same hole from different directions) for the body, anywhere strength is needed and a running stitch or other simple stitch where strength isn't needed.
-
Thanks Pat, I like the saddle stitch myself. I've looked at several on Google but I was hoping to see some of the ones that PA has made.
Patrick
-
I'll put up what I have. I try to have one for each rifle I shoot. That way I don't have to swap stuff back and forth.
-
Thanks, thats a great idea Eddie.
So what your saying is, I need to acquire more guns. I like that idea!

Here are my bags. The beaded one is patterned after a Cheyenne bag in the National Museum of Natural History. I didn't make the horn on that one. The plain bag is just a generic variety, with a bison horn powder horn. I did make that horn. I've hunted with the plain bag, but still need to take the beaded one out and get a little dirt on it. CC
-
Nice!
-
You make some great looking bags. I forgot about taking some pictures of mine,,, tomorrow.
-
Wow - I really like the Beaded Bag ! Bob
-
Pat...Something to carry our possibliities with for an outing bow shooting?Good idea.I usually wear mine.Very handy at the range or even actual hunting.Wide range of possible usables put in there.I'll get a pic up of mine.

Beaded it a little with some brick red white hearts just for panash and glass weight to hold the flap down nice but not necessary.Fringe has home made copper cones pinched on.All brain tan of course.I carry anything in there from deer grunt/doe bleat/rattle sticks/flint and steel kit/char cloth/bees wax/needle and thread you name it.Handy bag to have with.I'm sure you've got your own thoughts on that. The shoulder strap I like the length that when you sit down the bottom of the bag is at seat level.Kind of paticular I quess but I like wearing things that are'nt overly cumbersome and get in the way of normal movement.Size is 8" by 10" or so.
-
Here's a few of mine. I just cut and made the one with fringes today. I wanted one for my double barrel BP shotgun and an upcoming squirrel hunt with my brother and son.
-
I use a very plain Braintan bag for all shooting associated stuff on the right side w/Powder Horn and an Oilskin Haversack on the left. The Oilskin bag carries Fire starter/extra wool mittens and something to munch on. Bob
-
You guys have some great looking bags. Maybe more people will post theirs as well. Thanks for the compliments on mine. I look forward to more posts. CC
-
Thanks guy's for posting the pics! All of them are great looking bags.
See this is why I wanted to see pa pictures, simple but effective. And some with a little bling! All of the ones I see online are pretty fancy. Im bad about over thinking things.
I still need to "just make a bow!"

That must be a big bag, you have it loaded. I might have to steal your idea for carrying the Hawk.
-
Use this bag more as a shooting bag
-
Here is one made from left over wool after making a capote
-
Brian, those are nice. Keep them coming.
-
Very nice Brian, all three. I like the first one best of all, and I agree with mullet, the hawk placement is a great idea.
-
Here are a few more possible bags.
-
Back Pack but could be modified to one strap. I hope some of the pictures give you a few ideas.
-
Somebody has a bag problem. :D
Very cool Brian

Looks like Brian has more bags than his wife!
Here's a few of mine.
This is the first bag I got after getting into black powder.

This one was made by a friend of mine who has passed on, Dick Zawacki, it's made to tie onto your belt and wear on your hip.

Here's my favorite, I use it with my flintlock. A few years back I gave my friend Rob Marcotte a deer skin to tan and last year he surprised me with this gift, what a guy!

You Guys are inspiring Me, I have 2/3 of a Badger hide left over from another project (made a Knife sheath with the head/shoulder part). Will be a good Winter project - the tail end will be the "flap" on the bag. Enjoy seeing all the bags posted so far - Bob.
-
Man, these are great. I just got the new edition of Muzzleloader yesterday and I didn't see a bag in the magazine that could hold a candle to some of these.
I guess I'm going to buy a ground hog hide, I really want to make a bag out of one.

Last fall I finished a buffalo powderhorn and suddenly was overcome with an urge to put a really fancypants strap on it. I went through all the options I had at home and there was absolutely nothing for materials that tripped my sear. So I got on the phone to a buddy, Julup, to ask what he might have in his heap of trade goods. He sent me a photo of some very thin embroidered ribbon in a gorgeous red, black, and white pattern. He said it was far too thin to be used by itself but it could be sewn to thin leather. We made the deal and spent several days pacing until it arrived. Once it was in my hands, I knew what leather backing I wanted. Several years back, someone sent me a partially braintanned deer hide, and I apologize for forgetting who that was. I cut two strips and carefully sewed them together to make a longer strap.
I have now spent 8 hours on stitching the edges together and I am about halfway there! I am getting 16 stitches to the inch by using the pattern on the edge of the fabric ribbon. There is a small interrupted black line that I am using to guide the stitch spacing. Since I am using black thread, it disappears into the pattern on the ribbon side, but shows against the tawny brown of the leather to create a pretty pattern.
Why am I going to such lengths? What the heck was I thinking? If I was paying myself minimum wage for this job, I could have gone to someone that specializes in card weaving or small loom weaving and had a fantastic custom wool yarn strap woven for less that I will have into this for labor, not even including materials!

Man that is cool JW!
A couple of years ago I made a leather purse for my wife for her birthday. I figured up that I had 18 hours in the double loop stitch around the edges. That was the first one I ever done and probably the last. I done half one weekend and half the next. I couldn't hardly use my finger tips during the week.
Patrick
-
JW, fantastic looking strap and what a good idea with the braintan backing, When I have one of my dummy moments that are super labor intense I always end up at the end of the day thinking you can' t buy stuff like this anywhere and everyone is unique, no two are the same just like snowflakes. I like it and gave me some ideas , Oh we got some perfect sewing weather going on 0 degrees this morning and a nice fresh breeze, I'm sure you know the kind I'm talking about. Bob

Way cool JDub ! Bob

Picture a fork with a double edged dagger blade for a handle and all the tines bent and twisted in every direction. Just because you are unique doesn't mean you are useful! LOL!
-
Mine way back in the day...
-
Man that is sharp! I love the finish in that powder horn.
Patrick
-
That's a nice kit, Rick.
-
I just had to bring this back up. Anyone else have bags to post. :-M :OK
-
A dying friend gave me all his BP stuff, included were three possible bags complete with horns.
I have them loaded for a particular rifle or fowler and grab the that fits my weapon when I head to the woods.
The one in the picture is for my .44. No matter how I treat the leather it always forms the white mold on the outside over time, it has same mold on the flint wallet inside the bag.
-
That's a very nice set, Eric.
Could the white be residue from the treatment that was used on the bag? I've seen treatments with bees wax and paraffin leave similar residues. Have you tried saddle soap to eliminate or reduce it?
-
Eric, one of my shootin' bags has a similar problem. I didn't make it so I don't know how the leather was treated.
Pat, I'll give it a try.
I appreciate you pulling this thread back up, there are some awesome bags shown on this thread. My compliments to all those who crafted these superb bags.
-
I have saddle soaped it and used leather cleaner. It will stay clear for a while then the white will show up again.
I have some Montana Pitch Blend boot dressing I will try next.
The flint wallet turns the quickest.
-
I use Montana Pitch Blend and haven't noticed it on my leather work.
Have you wiped with a mild chlorox solution? If it is mold that might kill the fungi.
Will you show more pics of your flint envelope?
-
I haven't looked in that bag in a while and forgot what all I had in the flint wallet. The friend who gave me his stuff put the accessories in it. The is a knapping hammer .top jaw turn screw, a brass turn screw, extra leather to hold the flint in the jaws, ball puller, ramrod puller and a bore brush. I guess I took all the flints out of it but it has pockets for a half dozen or so.
I gave the wallet a good cleaning with a nut oil based based leather cleaner after I took the pictures. I will see how long that keeps the white stuff at bay.

Christmas 1978, the year Marcia and I got married(in March) she gave me a TC .50 cal Hawkins rifle(percussion). I killed my first 2 deer with it the next season, an 8pt buck and a doe. This is the possibles bag I made. It's small compared to all the others I've seen but it carried all I needed to hunt with this gun. I carried pre-waxed 370gr maxi balls(yellow box), a can of percussion caps, 4 glass viles with 70gr to 90gr of black powder and a small bottle of pre-soaked solvent patches. You can see from the condition of the leather I haven't used it for years, haven't shot the gun in years. Anyway, here are a few pics...

Very nice Mike! You can tell it's been well used. Nothing like making a good quality leather garmet, it will last years and years!

I just finished this brain tanned bag to day for my smoothbore. I needed a little larger bag.
-
That's a nice traditional bag, Eddie.

Thanks, Pat.

You're on a roll Bud - very nice ! Bob

Thank you, Bob.

Made this one for Pearly a few years back. i hope its a lot dirtier these days:)
Made it from a tanned Bull Elk I was fortunate to harvest back in 2012 and had professionally tanned, back then i know i would have messed it up big time lol.
I lined it with red wool and the bead work was really fun, this was my second beading project. Wish i could remember what size beads they were. either 11 o r 12. the shoulder strap is a 2 part-er, one half i added a beaded wool panel of the same color pattern just opposite. the other half is just a simple 3 strand braid.
A couple blue/red/white chevron trade beads hold on the little ermine tails. Also added a few dentalium shells along some of the bead work and borders of the bag.
And of course whats a possibles bag without a patch knife? I had a small knife made from 4140 and antler that i have no idea where it came from. just laying around in its box and no sheath. It has an odd shaped hilt that made it perfect for just a little simple tie thong to hold it up square.
if i remember properly he had shot that fox while out hunting those whitetail things. the tanned face made a nice addition to the closed flap. idk if its all that visible but i put some abalone behind the foxes empty eye holes as well.
Anyways thanks for looking:) possible bags are always a fun project, i have some nice light weight veg tan, and more elk bucksin for some more bag projects.

Wow, Those look like my tools! I have a knife on the bench EXACTLY like that one and I sent out a hatchet like that about a year ago.
