Title: Prettiest point I've made Wifey took it away from me
Post by: 1442 on December 31, 2016, 01:09:47 am
This is a point I made a couple years ago or so from a slab I got in a point trade.
I hadn't worked much slabs at the time and I was so worried the whole time I was working on it, but I managed to get flakes to run all over it and got some short notches in the corners. I was so proud of it.
The first thing wifey said was "That ones MINE"
I was glad though, It hangs from her rearview mirror now and she cherishes it and is very protective of it.

I was told it is Owyhee picture jasper

What makes me sad is I got another piece of it in the trade but I put it somewhere and can't find it now. It's just as pretty as this piece is. One of these days I will find it I'm sure cause I remember thinking that I would put it up and save it until I had more practice working slabs.
Anyway, here it is

Wow, I can see why she took it, glad it's still in the family and hope you find the other slab soon.

Looks like Deschutes or Biggs jasper. You can knapp Deshutes raw so I say Deschutes cause it don't look heat treated colored.

Thanks
It was a good flaking rock
The colors make it real hard to see the flake scars even in hand

Thanks for sharing 1442 that is a awesome point sure glad you're wifey took it or we probably never would have gotten to see it. Hope you find the other slab. At first glance it looks like it has steps all over it. Beautiful material

Real nice!  I see why you'd wife wanted it.  If Wifey ain't happy, no body is happy :).  The other piece is probably hiding in plain site, and is waiting for the right time to be found :). Hopefully, I have time to get that good at the working.

I always thought it was Owyhee picture jasper, that's what the sender said it was.
I don't know rocks too well.

I don't doubt Orrums knowledge about rocks at all.
just been going by what the sender said it was, but I would like to know for certain.
I looked up pics of  Deschutes, Biggs and Owyhee jaspers and all I can say is WOW! WOW! and WOW!
Awesome rocks!  I need a truck load of each.

I'm gonna go look up the original trade topic and see who sent it to me and refresh my memory a bit.

OK It was a man named Greg V. (not sure if he wants his name used or not) from Idaho who attends the glass buttes knapin.
The comments in the thread revealed that this rock came from a mine that is now closed, or was closed as of April 2014.
That's when I made this point after getting lessons on working slabs at the SW Louisiana knap in

Go to the Succor Creek area of Oregon on the border with Idaho and you will find picture jasper everywhere. The Deschutes is very expensive since it doesnt really exist anymore. Other than Biggs and it the rest have to be heat treated. I have a bunch of Deschutes arrow point preforms sawn out of slabs.  Picture jasper is famous because it has scenery like rolling hills or mountains with cliffs, lakes and blue sky!!!   I will try to post a pic of a Wild Horse knife with China Berry handle that my mentor made. I slabbed it and  heat-treated it. It's almost all from the sky part of the picture jasper.  Hans somebody or other wrote two books about Owhyee mountain picture jaspers. I have been there rockhounding and it's the most awesome wild rugged out in nowhere place I have ever been!!!

If your wife is anything like mine she grabbed that one so you wouldn't put it on an arrow and lose it in the woods. lol. I can hear myself now "this will be my lucky arrow!!"  :D that point looks incredible, a masterpiece. I'd be proud that she wears it.
