Well, considering there's no turkey camp in the black hills this year.. :'( :'(. Anybody want to join me and a few friends here in Michigan for spring turkey camp. The week of May 22nd, in Fife lake, MI. There's a rustic state forest campground there with lots of hunting property around. This will likely be a far cry from JW's turkey camp, but it'll be fun. I'll be doing some cooking, but please bring a dish or two to pass. Maybe we can work on some bows and some flint knapping, depending on who shows up.
Due to legal B.S. I can't act as a guide, but shouldn't be hard for anyone to find some birds in the area.
If anyone from out of state would like to come, pm me and I'll send details about what licenses and when you need to purchase.

Dave - I might be interested. Let Me do some checking. Bob

Sounds good Bob. I hope you can make it!

If I know Dave, there will be pasties there. Delicious, stick to your ribs, give you immortal strength, good for your soul pasties!
-
You can bank on it John. Pasties for lunch after chasing birds in the morning. Yummy!
-
I wish I lived closer I'd be there. Sounds like a real good time. I have to ask what are pasties? I only know one thing called pasties and if you ate them you definitely were getting kicked out of the stag party! Hope you guys have an blast at turkey camp.
-
Check the cooking page. There's a whole thread about pasties. It'll be a good time for sure. So far there's only a few showing up, but that's fine too. More pasties for me!

If you are even close to the fence, much less sitting on it, lemme drop a dime on ol' Dave! When he starts to call like a lonely hen, he talks turkey. Several times, I felt my tailfeathers fan and the strut starting to move my feet. Good thing I was clean shaven and had a head of hair, or I mighta ended up in the bag!
You owe it to yourself to just hear him do some of that fine calling.
-
Thanks John! I'll never forget the look on Bybee's face when I started working 2 calls at once. We pulled out all the tricks on that Tom, and that fat b@$tard still wouldn't come in.
There will be some custom dave made turkey calls there as well, might even make a few while in camp.

Dave - I'm going to have to wait and see how My Hunt goes here downstate. A Buddy and I are trying to do it the hard way - no Camo, no blind - one Guy calling and a shooter. Might just come up and hang around Camp for a day or three if that's OK - Bob.
-
You're always welcome Bob, even if it is a day or two. I always do it the hard way. Although I do get the camo out, but no blind. Get the caller 10-20 yards behind the shooter, but not too far. I've done this method before and had the bird show up in between us, so behind the shooter. That was a bummer. Good luck Bob!

Going up to the campground tomorrow to do some turkey scouting. I'll probably have a couple pics to post, hopefully of some birds.

Saw a lot of chasin' and Strutin' going on yesterday around here :G ! Bob
-
I figured that would be happen soon Bob. I saw 3 birds today, a bunch of deer, a bobcat, and a bald eagle. Not all at the campground, but it was a good morning to be in the woods. It was cold, 16 degrees, but it was good!

Really surprised you don't have more takers on the turkey 🦃 camp Dave. Sure wish I could be there. They still seem to be in the big flocks here.

Bjrogg, I wasn't expecting a bunch of folks. This is the first year I've tried it. I went to JW's turkey camp last year in South Dakota and it was so much fun, when he cancelled for this year I thought I'd try here. Even if it's only 2 or 3 this year, it'll be a good time!

Dave I'm sure it'll be great time wish I could be one of the 2 or 3.

It isn't a game of how many can be there, but the quality of those that come. Having Dave in camp was fun. Poor bugger was a little worried for his safety and wellbeing at first. And there are still some things that we will never speak of again....
(-P
And since things have been pushed back in the matter of taking that job in AZ, I am holding a camp this year, too. Albeit a bit smaller and more compact.
Maybe some day you can host me in your camp!
-
I couldn't agree more John! It's not about the numbers. It was a great time, what happens in the black hills stays in the hills. ;D
I'd love to see you make it to the Great Lakes state John! Chase a few eastern farmland birds :G. Maybe someday.

Not a great pic, but I was in the truck and it's the best pic I could get. It's getting close! ;D
There's a couple birds in this group at full strut. Can't wait for May!

Well folks, for anybody still pondering the idea of coming to camp. It's not far off. I'll be in camp Friday evening on the 19th. It's now in Baldwin, Michigan. I did some scouting at the first location I picked a month or so ago, and they are doing some intensive logging in the area, and will be for some time.
Anybody, that's interested just send me a PM and I'll send ya back the exact location, and directions if need be. It's going to be a short camp. I'll have to be back at work on Wednesday the 24th. Nice long weekend. I'm thinking we can bring home the turkey bacon in that time.

Good Luck Dave, sure sounds like fun. Don't forget to take pictures and fill us in when you get back. Looking forward to hearing about your hunt.

Well we made it back from camp alive and well. Unfortunately the turkeys are in the same shape...alive. It ended up just being myself and my 14 yr old nephew. It was a blast. We worked lots of birds, but just couldn't pull them in close enough. With the exception of a lone hen. It was getting to the point where we were ready to give her a name. She clearly liked or company. At one point, we had a group of toms on the other side of the dirt road, private land of course, gobbling to beat the band, but I swear they could all read the sign that said state land open to hunting. They just refused to cross the road. It was fun, and we ate like kings! Our campsite was right on Lake Michigan, as you can see in the pic. It rained a little, but nobody cared. Already thinking about turkey camp next year. I hope a few of you can make it next year.

Looks like a blast.. Good times hunting with a young fella.. He'll remember it for years
Thanks Leroy

:G bummer may have to get in contact for next time...
-
Dave it's been so wet, I've been busy trying to get My Yard caught up this Spring. Will try My best to make it next Year (SH) :G ! Cool looking spot ! Bob
-
Dave,
Looks like a great camping spot.
It appears that your nephew enjoyed the hunt, I wish I could have accepted your generous offer, perhaps next year.
Kevin
-
Thanks guys. It was a little wet. A big major storm just missed us, we kinda lucked out there. It was a good time for sure. Probably be in a different spot next year. I like the idea of hunting different areas. That was my nephew's first hunting camp. He's already making plans for deer camp, bear camp, and next years turkey camp. That's what it's all about right there!! It's never about the harvest, however that is a great feeling as well, but more about the adventure and time in the woods. I wish non hunters could understand that better, but then that's like asking me to understand what it's like to be a girl. :o I'll never understand simply based on the fact that I'm not a girl.
I've got some thoughts on next years camp, would love to know everyone's thoughts. I was thinking about actually starting a traditional turkey tournament/camp for lack of a better word. With prizes for the biggest bird, etc... Who knows maybe someday it could turn into a fairly large shooting event.
Anyway, thanks for watching! I'll be in the turkey woods again in the morning, I'll keep ya posted.

Bare camp? (-P
-
Yup, Bear camp! I'll be applying for my Bear tag this morning. There's a fair amount of black bears in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I'd love to see some folks come up for that, but non resident tags are very hard to come by. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes.
