This is my first attempt at a horn bow, after making a few antler bows I got the itch to make a horn bow. This was definitely a learning experience for me. It took about a month of work just to get the bow ready for sinew. The first two pics are about a day after the first 2 layers of sinew was applied, I waited for about a week then applied 2 more layers of sinew. I am amazed on how much reflex these bows gained in a month after the sinew was applied. Hopefully in about 7 months I will be posting pics for the finished bow.

a few more pics.
-
Very nice can't wait to see it finished !
-
That looks great.Aligned very nicely too.I'm sure your licking your chops to be tillering that boy.How long is it?
-
Looks great! That may be a stout bow in 7 months.
-
Thanks guys!
Beadman this bow is 38 inches tip to tip, by the time I decide on where to put the sinew ball for nocks it will be around 35 inches nock to nock im guessing.
Chuck I can only hope this bow turns out as good as your bows. Tillering might be a nightmare, I'm guessing you tiller by a little scrapping and heat.
-
I'm really looking forward to seeing this complete. Great start. Now the hard part. I'm in the same place on my first horn bow, just put the last layer of sinew on last week.

That looks really nice. How do you brace something like that?
-
That looks really good Redhand! Hey Eric, any pics?
-
Looking good so far! Looks like a primo set of horns.
I've only finished 2, so my experience is limited, I used more
heat than scraping for tillering. Horn and sinew sometimes have a mind of their own
-
The tillering with heat will be interesting. I'm going to have a lot of questions when that time comes. There seems to be plenty of guys on here with that experience.
I'll see if I can manage to load a few pics of my SLOW progress.
-
Not so slow as me; horns arrived weeks ago but things have been so crazy in work I've barely had chance to look at them😀
-
Thanks Goat the two you finished looks great, it seems like horn and sinew would be very flexible. I have seen some horn bows on the internet that when they were strung it looks like they could very easily flip on you.
Thanks High-Desert I look forward to seeing your pics
DC with this much reflex I would guess that you would brace it like the Koreans brace theirs. Then again maybe through the tillering process you can some how tame some of the reflex.
stuckinthemud I had these set of horns for about a year before I even messed with them. I didn't know where to start, so finally I just decided to go for it. And for me the hardest part was cutting the top curl from the horn.

Looks awesome. Nice work
Does it have a wood core? How wide is it at the grip?
-
Thanks loon this bow does not have a wood core just horn and sinew. The handle is about 1 1/2 wide the limbs are about 1 3/4 wide.
-
Those siyahs look awesome, seems hard to pull off with just horn
-
That looks like it could be interesting! With it being that wide it should be laterally stable. The use of heat is more for tweaking twists and lateral imbalances.
When did you put the last sinew on?
-
This bow has been drying for just about a months now. I put the first course of sinew on around the first of January, waited for about a week then put the second course of sinew on.
-
Beautiful!
Can't wait to have a go at one of these.
-
Any update on this bow? Did you finish it?
-
Redhand had an elk antler bow build I was looking forward to seeing finished too.Things happen. He should get around to showing it sometime.
-
Awesome reflex. Tips aligned very nicely. Cant wait to see the end result, WOW:)
