Title: turkey hunting set up, photo custom turkey head added
Post by: bradsmith2010 on February 15, 2017, 01:43:25 pm
:) :)    ok I am getting ready for turkey hunting,, I can go to Texas first of April,,so about 6 weeks to get in practice,,,
the bow I am using I made last year,, well I think 2015 cause I used it for spring hunting last year,,
it is osage 55 1/2 nock to nock and draws about 50 at 27 inches,,it is wide and handles the draw fine,, I wanted something to shoot sitting down or in a blind,,
ok the arrows are heavy spine and weight,, but they fly just great,, sometimes a bow does not go by the chart,,
they are about 700 grains birch  and 65# spine,, I plan on keeping my shots close,, hopefully my decoy will help with that,, dont get me wrong when I stump shoot I like to shoot long range,, but on a turkey,, I want a close shot,,and at 10 yards these arrows fly great, and tradjectory is not an issue,,
I will be using a 2 blade simmons head,, I have thought about getting a head that I could head shoot with,, but just dont have the confidence,, maybe next year,,
I can call pretty good, so if the turkeys are in the mood, I think I can get a good close shot,, :)

I am also thinking of getting a ghillie suite to try,, but dont have one yet,,

thanks guys,, yes the merriman is here in santa fe,, but I will be hunting in Texas Rio Grande,,
yes there was a little hair on the rawhide,, that is what is giving it the color,,
I hope to get to hunt here too,, but it is harder to find a place to hunt ,, there is public land,, but I dont know my way around too well,,

That is a sweet bend on that little bow!  Good luck with the birds.

That is a really nice bending uniquely covered bow Brad.I see the rio grande bird is over there. The eastern here seem to be a very wary type, but if I can stay at it hopefully run across a hot enough strutter  I can get a good shot.Getting a turkey is a big achievement with primitive equipment for sure.Ghilly suit sounds good too.
Hav'nt heard them gobbling here yet but will soon I'm sure. Some years sooner than others.Good luck.

yes I think it depends on how much pressure they get and how "educated" they are,,
a young jake that never seen hunter,, can be easier,, than a big bird that got shot at several times,,
but they are all fun,,
I have hunted in Tenn,, Colorado,,, New York,,,Texas,, New Mexico,, and seen easy and smart birds all over,, you just have to get lucky,, right???  Im more patient than ever,, and that helps,, I just like being out there,, when I might get a chance to shoot one,, still trying to decide on the ghillie suite,, I could use it for deer too,,

Nice set for gobbler chasing!  I would highly recommend a leafy suit for all hunting.  Our group here have been using leafy suits with a leafy head net for a number of years especially when trying for gobblers.  We have had turkeys walk within feet of us while in the open without a blind of any sort.  Of course the big thing is getting the shot off!  Trying to move still gets them on the run if they see movement.  We have shot gobblers as close as 8 - 10 feet away with primitive archery gear using the leafy suit.  Not so with regular camo.  There are 8 of us who have converted because of how well they have worked over the years.  Even started using the suits for deer hunting now.  Good luck this spring!  The birds are starting to get quite active in our area.

well Ive been out shooting the turkey bow today,, not quite confident on a head shot,, but my accuracy is pretty consistent,, I hope if I work hard,,, I will have the confidence for a head shot,,
gonna check out the leafy suite,,for sure,, most my shots I have been practicing sitting down or kneeling,,

well I am getting pretty excited about hunting some birds,,
still need to get my leafy suite,, my work has gotten in the way of getting all my supplies together, but I have a few weeks,, so I am ok,,
I am Still practicing nearly every day,, and working on my head shot at less than 10 yards,, I know thats a dream,, but I am still unrealistically optimistic,, hope you guys are getting ready,,, sure would like to see your set up and photos,, :G

Good Luck Brad. Thats a beautiful bend you got in that short stick and those heavy arrows should penetrate those feathers I would think.
Ed thats a sweet setup you got there to

Beadman,, that is a nice set up,, they should just drop dead of fear to see that :G  thanks bjrog,, I think it will work great,,if I hit the mark,,
I actually been shooting a shorter bow today for fun, and hit really well with that too, so I have a backup,, :G

Title: Re: turkey hunting set up,,
Post by: bradsmith2010 on March 17, 2017, 03:55:34 pm
well I been praticing pretty much every day, ,sitting down,, and close range,,
I really pay attention to my very first shot of the day with no warm up,,
I am shooting at a piece of paper about the size of a turkey head, today my first shot hit right on it ,, just under,, it would have hit the base of the neck,,
ok I know hitting a piece of paper is alot easier than a real turkey, but it does build the confidence,, I am not really planning on trying a head shot unless that is all I get,, but i figure if i am consistant at that, I have a good chance hitting the turkey kill zone,, I plan on shooting 10 yards or less with my decoy set up,, but if I have to go 20 I feel like I can do it,, I have practiced more this year than in a long time, I just kept it up after elk season last year, and it feels great not trying to play catch up,,
my main bow is still the 54 inch bow,, with long heavy arrow,,,, ok that being said,, if I get there and cant get any close shots,, I will have my elk bow with me,, and I am confident at longer range with it,, it is just longer than I like for shooting out of a blind or sitting down,, that would be my back up plan of shooting with the leafy suite no blind,, :) ok I am not a bit excited about this,, turkey hunting,
Title: Re: turkey hunting set up,,
Post by: bradsmith2010 on March 17, 2017, 05:23:13 pm
ok here is my first shot in the afternoon,, no warm up, no glove or arm guard,, just went out and shot one arrow at 15 yards to see how that would feel,, kneeling,, this is happening more consistantly ,, but as stated I have been shooting a little every day,, but it seems to be having a positive effect, ,slowly,, :)
you guys that have shot shorter bows know it is a bit of a challenge to get consistant,, but with practice it can be done,, 15 yards is not far by any standard,, but consistancy at any range is key, how many of you have missed a whole deer at 10 yards,, I have,, well,, practice at your close hunting range is key,:)

Good luck on the turkeys guys. Your gear looks up to the task if you can just get to full draw without them knowing. I've always wanted to take one with a primitive bow and have had a few chances but so far not even a feather touched by one of my arrows. I like your practice routine Brad, hope you get that 10 yd. shot and connect. Also like that bow, has a real primitive look with the backing and the overall shape/profile of it.
Title: Re: turkey hunting set up,,more pics added
Post by: bradsmith2010 on March 18, 2017, 06:10:45 pm
yep it is so hard to get drawn,, I have had them in full flight as I drew my bow,, I am going to use leafy suite and blind and decoy this year to tip the odds in my favor I hope,,,, I have never had one just strut around with his back to me like utube,,
but I love hunting them,,, so will give it my best shot,,, I have practiced more this year than in a long time so odds are Im gonna hit pretty close to where I aim,,thats still no gaurantee,, they make me nervous when they are that close,,, and so my shooting is not as accurate as on the calm pratice range,,
thanks for the comments on the bow,, I made it just for turkey hunting,, it is a bit wide, but I wanted it shorter to suite turkey hunting sitting or in blind,, it shoots really nice for a shorter bow,, I was gonna heat it and try to get a bit more out of the profile,, I wrote Marc and he felt leaving as is was best so I took his advice, so it is just natural no heat,, the arrow in the photo is a 700 grain maple shaft,,, i dont have a place to test it right now, but I have a feeling my point on is about 30 yards with that heavy arrow,, I cant tell any difference at 10 to 15 yards,, so I really dont have any excuses(yet)   :G

Good Luck Brad, I like that same technique of practice. I have my bow in my work shop and several times throughout the day I string it and shoot 2-4 arrows then put it away and get back to work. Always try to make that first shot a good one. Don't forget when your hunting to concentrate on that spot. It's easy to split your attention between animal and spot and guess where your arrow goes, at least that's what happened to me the first time I shot at a animal. :NN

Post by: bradsmith2010 on March 20, 2017, 05:59:51 pm
yes you are right about the spot, I am pretty good at getting tunnel vision and just looking only at where I want the arrow to go,, but easier said than done, but I really try to just look at the spot,,  I have been able to get out to 17 yards now,, and hitting pretty good,, but am still working on the 10 yard skillet shot,, I feel like I should be able to hit that with a blind fold, but not there yet,, :NN still a work in progress,,but really fun working on it,,

Brad the youth season[16 years and under] residents only April 9 to the 17th starts it off.
Lots of requirements, stipulations, and fees waived too[veterans, disabled, and retired] depending on circumstances too many to type but a hunting license is required for any able bodied adult nonresident or resident and if he or she is hunting land other then what he or she owns or public hunting ground they need to buy a tag for one of the seasons. If wanting to hunt another season another tag is purchased for that time period.
The regular seasons are set up this way:
season 1----April 18-21
season 2----April 22-26
season 3----April 27-May 3
season 4----May 4-22
Resident archery only license April 18-May 22  hunting straight through.
Yes I hunt on just my own land here by the yard. :G

i used to hunt next to my house in Tenn, and the turkeys were so tame off season ,,, but when the season hit man they got smart and were hard to hunt,,, but I still enjoyed it and had other places to hunt too, but Tenn was a challenging place to hunt the turkey, not that many birds and lots of hunters and they were on to us,,  :G   in TExas alot fo the time you are working birds that never saw a hunter,, and that makes it a bit easier,, New Mexico,, I have not hunted that much, cause I really dont know my way around the public land here, but am learning a little,, :G

Well regardless you put a lot of time and thought into it.Wish ya luck.
I'm still waiting for that strutter to turn his back yet too.Got a friend with a long bow shoot 2 last year on public hunting ground.Exceptional year if you ask me.I'm sitting at an area that's been a life long dream so I try to enjoy it.They are pretty wary here.
Setting up from them early morning in the dark less then 100 yards from where they are roosted is about the best scenario here to get.

neck shot, today I got creative,,,tryed to make it a bit more realistifc,,the paper dont lie, I missed the first shot,, second shot got him,, well I hope I have two turkeys to shoot at,, cause I am 50 50 at best now,, but still have time to work on my shot,, the bow is shooting great,, so no excuse there,, :G

yep if you got two in one year with long bow, thats pretty darn good,, I am sure you gonna have some luck if you get set up enough one gonna make a mistake,, turn his back to you and all that, ,just like utube,, at 5 yards,, you gonna feel bad its gonna be so easy,,,

if it has barbs ,, probably not leagal,, I am not familiar with it,, but a fishing arrow weight would proabley be ok out to 10 yards,,but I think most of those are fiberglass,, its to late for me to change arrows anyway, I am used to what I am shooting,,,but I do like a heavy arrow for short range,, :G

Brad have you ever seen the arrow heads I think he's called Beacum outdoors ( probably spelled that wrong). He's on YouTube and makes some pretty cool stuff. He drills holes in his shafts.(actually I think there fore shafts and puts about 3" long dowels though them. (Actually I think he carves them from branches). He uses two of them with hole drilled in two different spots on shaft 90 degrees from each other so it's like a x on his shaft. He spin balances them. He also ties them on shaft which would probably work better without fore shaft. If you get a chance he's entertaining if nothing else.

I checked out the guy you referred to,, nice video, I saw the arrows,, very nice,,
I have tried someting similar with nails,, making the X,, and got the arrow to shoot pretty good, I am just not sure if it was adequate for a turkey, they are so tuff,, I will try with broad head this year,, and maybe experiement with something made for a head shot next year,,
I am probably  going to shoot a body shot ,, and only attemp the head shot if that is the only shot I have,,
I feel like the broadhead gives you the option for both,,,, where the other head does not, so its a trade off,,I am considering it though,,I have seen some Native arrows with the X like that as well,, :G

I wouldn't want to get shoot by it.lol. I'm surprised it doesn't weigh more than that. I forgot to ask before. That same YouTube guy had a really cool decoy he was making. He actually stuffed a hen and was going to poise it in a submissive position for Tom turkey to mount with back towards hunter. I haven't watched him since to see if he used it yet.

yes hope to see him get one with  that decoy set up,,,
I have been working on my head shot,, and have a tip for the day,,
make sure you keep your right hand relaxed as you come to full draw,, if you start to tense up your fingers at full draw you will throw your shot off,,  sometimes tensing your fingers tourges the string and has negative effect on the release and arrow flight,, keeping the left bow hand relaxed is a good idea too,, ok thats my tip for the day,, enjoy your shooting,,
ps, the group I shot here is from 10 yards sitting,, fantisizing about shooting a turkey,,,, the arrows are a mix of sitka spruce and cedar,, I was experiementing and can tell no difference in how they shoot ,, they all flew well,,  :G

I chased Turkeys with Trad equipment for awhile and the best tip I can give you is to use a stool that the seat swivels. When you hear the bird and figure which way he's coming swivel in his direction so all you have to do is pull and shoot. I use to figure on getting a shot at about every five of six Goblers I called in. I hunted without a blind and no decoys so you can probally do better. I also hunt birds that are pressured. Shooting for the head is tough because it's always moving, I always tried for the base of the neck and if you hit low you can break their back. Hit em high and watch them die, hit them low and watch em go.lol

great advise,, thats about my odds at getting a shot with no blind,, sometimes I was so shocked I wsas getting the shot , I would blow it,, the birds in Tenn were pressured, so I know what you mean,,
when you call and they run the other way, odds are they have been shot at before,, I am sitting on a bucket so I can swivel is need be,,  my ghillie suit is coming too,
