Title: Out of commission for a while, especially bow building and shooting
Post by: Mo_coon-catcher on February 16, 2017, 07:30:03 pm
As of Tuesday night, now more of almost anything for me for a while. On my way home from work that night about 2 miles from home, I crested a hill and there was a truck in each lane. I swerved a bit but we still collided. I was going at about 55 mph, im not sure how fast they were going. I never lost conciousness through the hole thing. I'm glad I had on my seatbelt and the airbags were working. Since my face slammed forward into the airbag in impact. Then my truck did a 180* turn into the ditch. As soon as the movement stopped tried opening the door, I wouldn't budge and I oulf feel it smashed up. So I tried crawling up through the window, but I saw blood running from my face and a sharp pain in my left hip and right foot. So I stopped and called 911 asking for an ambulance. I disnt know how any one else was until we got to the hospital. Which 2 of us ended up getting taken by ambulance to Columbia. In the end I ended up with a broken right ankle, left hip was stretched and bruised, with small cuts everywhere, but the worst. I had a 2mm piece of glass pierce my left eye and bounce off my lense making it haze over. I was sent home after the surgery yesterday from having the glass removed, the damaged lense removed, and the hole stitched shut. I go back tomorrow to get my eye checked up on. And then Wednesday to get my ankle looked at again when the swelling goes down to see if it will need surgery or not. There's one broken bone in there that's very slightly skewed and they don't know for now if they can do anything better about it.

So for now I have no vision in my left eye except for light and very little shadow. In a couple months they will try putting in a new lense and see it that'll help get my vision close to normal. So for now I camt lean forward or lift more than a few pounds to keep the pressure off that eye. And I have a bum foot I can't put pressure in incase I loose my balance. There's going to be a lot a lounging around for me.

Seat belts and airbags to save lives and reduce damage. I happened to know the drivers of the other two trucks pretty well. Makes a bit of a predicament between being angry at them and hoping they get better and forgiving them. But the one I hade a head on with ended up with several places stitches up, a broke ankle, and a major concussions along with many more bruises and scrapes than I. He was just released today. I wore my seatbelt, he didn't.

Here's a couple of pictures incase anyone wants to see.my ankle looked like I was storing a baseball I there. And all the highway patrol, first responders, nurses and doctors said they've never seen someone in as good of mood and so talkative for what had just happened. I was even trying to help them a bit since I have so much trouble sitting still and doing nothing.

Looking at the damage to your vehicle I'd say you are very lucky to only have the injuries that you have.  I hope the recovery goes well.  You could pass some of the down time by going back through the old pages of the PA forum.

Kyle,
Glad you got through that alive!  I agree about the seat belts.  Hopefully, the eye surgery will be as easy as a normal cataract job.  The folks in Columbia are darned good medical people, they'll take good care of you.  Remember to take your meds. on time, and do what they tell you😀.  Get well quickly.

Wow! From the looks of your truck you are one lucky guy.  I am really glad you are doing so well and the few injuries you have are minor considering the type of accident you were in.  As Kevin said,  knowing you personally this hit home with me.  I will have you in my thoughts and prayers buddy. I hope everything goes well with your eye. Just don't over do it in your recovery.  Take care my friend.

Prayers for a complete recovery. It'll be a long road but you've got youth and attitude on your side. I know it won't be easy but listen to the docs and the pt folks. Do what they say, no more no less. It will get better. The Good Lord was watching out for you seeing the wreck pictures.

Sending up prayers for your complete and speedy recovery.  I'm with Pat B - it was your lucky day.  The Almighty undoubtedly has a plan for you.  Eyes heal up surprisingly well and I hope that you have good luck with yours.  Seeing you manage a smile through this kind of trouble tells me that you have a very positive attitude.  That kind of attitude will really help in the coming days.  Hang in there buddy.

Thanks for all they good wishes and prayers everyone. I really appreciate it. I had my first eye checkup today. She said it's healing really well and was surprised and happy that I was able to hold it open and look around with it. The inflammation was less than she was expecting. She cut my eye drops back from every 2 hours to 4 times per day, replaced a pill with another eye drop I take twice per day. It surprised me, but she said m eye was fine to walk around and do lift aerobics. But I can't bend my head below my heart or lift more than a phone book. But I can't walk anyway with the broken ankle, which I'm currently scheduled for surgery on Thursday. So far it's all good news. My next exam is Wednesday to check on how my cornea is healing.

Kyle, I am glad to hear the good news about your eye.  You are a lucky man...things could have went the other way real fast.  But all of us are happy they didn't!    You are in my prayers and thoughts.  Like several others have said, Take it easy and do not try to do things too fast.  That's advice from an old fart that has tried to do things faster than he should have!   :)

Your positive attitude and energy are going to get you through this.  You have a huge extended family here that will help you if you need anything!

Kyle - It hurts to think of the discomfort and pain that you must be dealing with tonight.  I'm so impressed that you are already able to contemplate the welfare of the fellow that caused the accident!  I suspect that I'd still be pretty focused on feelings of anger and distaste for the guy!

You will certainly be in our thoughts and prayers.  You have the advantages of youth, excellent general health, and most importantly, a very positive attitude!!!

Man, glad your alive...wow.  I caught a piece of plastic in my my left eye on the 4th of July when I was 19 in '95.  Cut it in half.  Sucks, and my eye is screwed but it doesn't slow me down.  Just can't hit a curve ball anymore!  But doesn't affect me much otherwise.  Just need to be conscious of safety now with my healthy eye!!!

If I may offer a piece of advice...start wearing glasses even if you don't need them for safety ALL the time.  Just get some clear lenses.  Can't afford even the most simple injury now.

I'll keep you in my thoughts for your recovery.  Keep your spirit up!

Kyle, I hardly know you but as I read your initial post, my guts got all in a knot and my heart started hammering.  I am so damned glad that you aren't hurt worse than what you are!  I am sure I am not the only person to feel this way, but you are part of OUR COMMUNITY and what affects you affects us.

I hope everybody reading this realizes it as well.  Because we set aside certain topics that are known to divide, we can focus on what joins us together.  If there is anything WE can do, don't hesitate to ask so we can work on it for you.

Now rest up and get knitted back together.

Thanks a bunch everyone! I really appreciate all the kind words and offers for help. Out of all the sites I've been to and seen. I think this is the most close community of people I've seen. This has been especially prevalent any time some one is injured and at any get together. At those it just feels like a whole bunch of family getting together.

At this point it'll be just resisting the urge to rub that eye and from going crazy locked in the house when I can't even work on crafts at the moment. Since Im not allowed to looked down except for long enough to tie a shoe one or twice a day. I wish I could use this as an opportunity to work on my knapping in addition to my napping skills. I have lots of stone and free time. But I can't look down that long as I feel it's a bit safer to keep small sharp shards away from my eye for now. Maybe I can put together a couple of quivers I'm needing to when I can look down. I have no leather so the plan is bees waxed heavy canvas in a full enclosure style.

I just got done with another surgery today. This one was quick and simple. The ankle bone that is broke was more like a crack that ran though the tartsus bone splitting it vertically. But I'd hadn't shifted places. So they just number my leg for the next day or say with injections in two nerves. Then they just made a small <1" incision in the back of my ankle and inserted a screw. So right now my leg is numb as can be from the knee down and feels like it's fallen asleep. But it aure beats the pain that would be there. The next big update will be after next Friday, when I have another eye exam to see if the inflammation has gone away so they can go in and get out the rest of the lense material. So at this point in looking at a total of 3 incisions in my eye by the time it's all said and done.

Glad to hear that you are still in good spirits bud.

When that eye gets better try not to stain it to hard.  Especially try to not over compensate with your good eye.  It could cause some pretty good headaches.

I'll be looking for your next update.  Stay strong brother.

I'm finally set up for my next eye surgery. It's planned for Monday morning with a follow up the next afternoon. They're going to go in from the front and clean out the lens material, then go in from the side to get a good look at the retina. It sounds like it won't be too bad, but it's going to be very wierd being awake while they work on my eye. They'll numb it, but it'll still be wierd. Then as long as everything is good, it'll be 8-10 weeks until thy out in the lens and see how the cornea looks, and how bad the scarring distorts my vision.
But the vision is a little better, since I can see color and shadows when the lights are dim. And my ankle is healing up decent. I'm up to about 50% motion and the swelling is way down. So only a matter of time until I'm back to normal.

Kyle,
Went through cataract surgery last spring - Lala land and a light show, semi awake through the whole thing, didn't realize it took about 45 minutes to an hour.  Sounds like you will get the same sort of procedure, relax and enjoy(?) The show😀.  Sounds like you are doing as good as possible.  We are all pulling for you I'm sure.  I doubt the docs want you shooting high power rifles for a while, though!  Maybe a light bow when you can lift and pull :BB :NN :).

Thanks everyone for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers.
I think this injury did mess up my desire to have one of the really hard recoiling Rigby rifles. And I can't pick up the long range rifle for a while, it doesn't recoil bad, but it weighs 20#. But it's probably for the best anyway. Once I get a couple bows caught up for people,  I'll have to make a light one for myself. I havnt made anything for myself in a while now.
I actually just got the preop call a couple minutes ago, I didn't realize they were going to use anesthesia for the surgery. Yhatlll make it much more nice being dulled down to not thinking about what there doing. It'll be very similar to a cataract surgery, except without putting the new lens in for a while.

I had the surgery Monday and the checkup Tuesday. And there is definite improvement to my sight. It's still not good, but I can make out objects and some details now. It's about like my eyesight in my good eye but without my glasses on. Wth the extra distortion of the scarring and wrinkled cornea from the stitches. Once the inflammation goes down and the stitches are removed, cut feels like my vision won't be too bad compared to what I'm used to even without the lens.

But it was an interesting experience. Fully awake and aware of time, but just enough anesthesia to be calm. After the shot to numb my eye, I couldn't feel a thing, but I could see the occasional shadow of the utensils removing the lens material. There would be a tweezer shaped shadow appear and grab a little squiggle that would move as it was pulled away. They had some music playing, so I just layed back for about 40-45 minutes and listened. I'm glad they weren't playing country or bluegrass or I would've been tempted to sing and dance along. I've been trying to figure out what there cutter was since they would say to turn it on and I could hear a humming sound. I'm guessing it was a laser. It was definitely an interesting experience that wasn't unpleasant at all until the numbing medicine wore off over night. Now it's the long wait until I get a new lens.

I just got 4 of 6 stitches removed from the eye yesterday. And he gave me te OK to go back to doingg normal activities in a few days once the scratches from the removal heals up. My vision in that eye is better, I can distinguish shapes now, but still not good. Which I don't expect it to be until they put a lens in. But I get checked again in a month to see about when to put a lens in. But it's healing well and by the end of the weekend I can essentially do as I please again.
Monday the orthopedic doctor will check out my ankle and see how it's healing. Hopefully it's more good news and I can start placing some weight on it. Then I can start drivin again. And as wierd as it sounds, I'm excited to get back to work again.

I can officially walk again! At yesterday's checkup the doctor asked if go was ready to walk again and told me to stand up. It's nice to use both feet again. But after nearly 2 months of no weight on that foot, it sure wasn't a pleasant experience. I think I'll be using a crutch or cane for a few days until I can tolerate placing my full weight in it again. Then it'll be time to hit the gym again and build that leg back up. Both my eye and ankle doctors told me I can do as I please, so I'm dangerous again! Just slowed down a bit and little more clumsy.

Great news!  Been out of the loop for a while or would have posted sooner.  You are now in the phase of recovery where the docs and pt folks, say "do whatever you want, but if it hurts, don't do that!"  Welcome to that club!😀👹
