Title: Rawhide-backed Mulberry
Post by: upstatenybowyer on April 18, 2017, 01:43:16 pm
This was another save compliments of my local highway department! It's all heartwood and performs really well. It started with an inch or so of reflex and took very little set. After 30 minutes of straight shooting it springs right back to it's original profile. It responded quite well to heat treating.

58" ntn
46# at 27"
backed w/goat rawhide
ebony tips
cork handle build up with leather cord wrapping

Thanks as always for looking.  :)

Good one! The pattern looks like snakeskin in the first picture. Did you stencil that on?

Nice, Id say your getting this "bow thing" figured out. The last several have been great looking sticks. Tiller is everything, the rest is frosting.

Nice Mulberry bow  Jeff. Tiller looks great as always. I cut some mulberry last week and got a couple of sweet staves.

Hey thanks guys.

DC, yes. I used sharpie with some cheap stencils I got from the hobby store. Next time I'm going with India ink.
You said it PD. It's all about the tiller. It makes it easier when you've got top notch bows on PA as reference.
Bob, it's really awesome wood. Lookin forward to see what you come up with.
Outlaw, I always look forward to seeing what you think. Value your opinion highly.
Bead, you're right about it being translucent. Seems like the perfect thickness too. It came as a drum head and for a very reasonable price.  ;)

Did you cut the drum head in a spiral?

DC and Aaron, no actually, I didn't. I'm assuming that by doing so you get the most out of the rawhide? If that works I'll definitely do it. Will it lay straight once it's wet?

Thanks Pat.  :)

From a 2' circle after it was wet and stretched it would have.Especially glued down with tite bond and wrapped with gauze.

Real nice bow Upstate. I cut some Mulberry this winter I'm still not sure if there is a bow in the whole tree it was so crooked and twisted up.

Very nice job, Mulberry makes a very light physical weight bow and they shoot fast. :)

Thanks Ed, I'll remember that for sure. bj,

I'd look for a section of the tree where the string alignment wouldn't be too much trouble. Mulberry doesn't seem to be as forgiving as osage when it comes to shaping with heat.

SB, that's a great idea!

Thank you Pappy. Your absolutely right about it being light. It feels like there's nothing in my hand when I pick it up.  (SH)

Real nice bow, and perfect timing for me too. I am just now tillering a mulberry recurve for my wife (she doesn't know) :), and it is taking more set than I would have liked and was considering heat treating it.  As this is only my second mulberry and I didn't temper the last, seeing yours has given me the push I needed to do just that.

Real nice bow you got there! Mulberry just seems so light doesn't it?

Mulberry is in the top 5 or 6 bow woods in my opinion. Being that it is light it has the potential to be fast. It is a strong bow wood and lends itself well to belly tempering.

It certainly is light. I just finished tempering mine and adding horn nocks. Hope it turns out as good as yours.
