The first week of April I broke ground on a pole shed that I'd been planning for some time. I had already collected the black locust timbers from my neighbors ground and with the help of a friend we drilled the holes and set the poles upright.

Over the next 3 weeks I spent my free time erecting a shed that will eventually be the setting for bow building and primitive skills classes as well as storage during the off season. My wife's one request was that it look good when I was done. My dilemma was how to do that on a limited budget.

Most of the work I did my self but there were a few spots where I used a second set of hands. The roof trusses and the first few pieces of tin were 2 of those places.
(http://i1311.photobucket.com/albums/s670/cotton7611/FC31A2D1-B380-4DB7-A106-17A412743F2F_zpsgz5pjsac.jpg) (http://s1311.photobucket.com/user/cotton7611/media/FC31A2D1-B380-4DB7-A106-17A412743F2F_zpsgz5pjsac.jpg.html)
The 1x6 oak board came free from a guy that couldn't use them for furniture due to their warping and checking. The metal roof was collected from 3 different sources and I paid $20 for all of it. And the storm windows were also free.

Total cost at this point is $320 mostly for the dimensional lumber and nails/screws.

After the Classic, I will start work in phase II and III.

When the bow barn is completed it will be open on 2 sides and have a footprint of roughly 24'x24'. With some loft space in the back corner.
-
That is coming together nicely Scott. That will be a great place to work out of the sun and rain.
-
Nice work, Scott and plenty of work space. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and any bowyer would think your shed looks good and so should your wife.
-
Looking good Scott. You have a good plan going there.
-
Looking very good!
-
That's inspiring. My brother-in-law and I want to build a board and batten sugar shack in the back. Costs a pretty penny, but you've shown a reliable structure can be built without dropping a fortune. :OK
-
Very cool Scott. That's gonna be a great space to work out of when finished. Are you planning on teaching formal classes?
-
I like the look of it . that's going to be a nice work shop.
-
You're right upstate, doesn't have to cost a fortune, but I did fall into some sizable good deals on the metal and side boards. Not sure I could duplicate that scenario at my whim. Right place, right time is a big part of life though, so good luck!
Aaron, my goal is to have semi regular learning opportunities (of the informal caliber) for area enthusiasts. Don't know how realistic that is, or if I'm qualified to dream that big, but worst case is I get an nice bow shed out of the deal.

Nice work Scott.Looks plenty respectable to me.I have a recycling junk yard by me too that gets reused for other projects.
Built Robin a four connected 9' by 12' compartment steel roofed and sides shed and runs for all her critters and hay.A 9' by 18' leanto steel roofed shop for her craft projects too.I have the tractor shed.Cool that you used the black locust logs.Your gonna like that place.
-
With your artistic eye, am confident it'll look just fine.
Keep us updated!

Man i wish i had the room for that, looking good

Outstanding - Way cool :BB (=) ! Bob
-
Very nice outdoor man cave.
-
Love the open air concept

That design is nice and should make for a great work space. I think the rustic look of the timber poles, oak siding and red metal roof will look nice on your property. Looks like the perfect set up Scott.
-
I knew had seen that design before!

I always look forward to Pa Mac's videos of the goings-on at his lil farm.
-
Very nice structure. It will serve you well.. The price point agrees with my Dutch heritage ;)
thanks Leroy
-
Prolly coulda benefited somewhat from that if I'd seen it in March. >:D
-
Scott....In time I'm sure you'll have the floor in rock flakes and chips 3 to 4 inches deep.
Stoker....You ai'nt much if you ai'nt Dutch right?
Knoll...You sure that guy on your video was'nt on the Red Green Show?
-
Stoker....You ai'nt much if you ai'nt Dutch right?
You gotter buddy
-
I have to keep up with this thread. I ain't no builder, but I try to be. I like what you have accomplished so far.
-
Looking good to me Scott
Just a little far from me is the only problem I see
-
Very cool Scott, thanks for sharing this build
-
Nice Scott, pleasure meeting you at the classic!
-
Thanks Bob. Likewise!
-
Phase II is almost complete.

Just a few more boards to finish the deck and then I'll be moving on.
-
Progress is a good thing. Gotta stop in one of these times to take it all in.
-
It's getting there. Better hurry and get it finished before the summer heats up.
-
That is looking good Scott, noting like you own work space. I love the design. You can just keep adding on when you need more space, and you will. ;)
Pappy
-
Just catching up on this Scott. That looks great, awesome design and space. May borrow your design in the future!
-
Gotta have a nice big work bench!!!!I add to my lean tos' occasionally here too for various reasons. Is yours within hollering distance from the house?Sometimes that's essential.....lol.
-
Sometimes just out of hollerin' distance is nice too ;D ;D
-
Yessir, good or bad she's just a shout away. ;D
I think I got a line on some hedge poles to use on the front roof. Won't be any fun nailin into though.
-
Just catching up on this Scott. That looks great, awesome design and space. May borrow your design in the future!
Showed the pics to a co-worker yesterday and he said the same thing. This sort of building has a certain appeal that just calls to folks. Borrow away Steve!
-
I think it looks great Scott. I guess my only concern would be snow load. I guess I don't know where you hang your hat, but around these parts we would run "rafters" from plate to plate and put 2x4 nailers crossways on top of the rafters for attaching the steel. If I described that so you can understand. I'll try to get some pictures if I get a chance
Bjrogg
-
I understood perfectly. Your concern was also mine untill I checked out the barn my grampa built some 40 years ago. Similar in almost every way except mine has more slope than grampa's. Since his demonstrated no significant damage or deterioration over 40 years, figured my barn would hold up also.
To answer your question about the 2x4 purlins vs my method: I eliminated the purlins by running the 2x6 trusses the other way. Thus saving cost and weight. I added the bridging to increase load bearing potential and stability (for my sake) on the roof.
-
I great to hear Scott, I'm definitely not saying it won't work it's just not a design I've ever seen before. Glad you've seen it tested. I do like everything about you bow barn and look forward to hearing how teaching our craft develops in the future.
Bjrogg
-
For shore, snow load is dramatically different from your house to mine. (S)
-
Fascia tin is up and that about wraps up phase II. I spoke to my brother about pickin out some decent hedge poles. He doesn't think that'll be hard since he's cut and saved quite a few. If I can find 3 good ones I will be back to diggin post holes soon.

Nothing he had cut would work for me, so we picked 3 likely candidates. The shorter log should work nicely as a mount for my Cody stave vise I'm hoping to get ahold of.

There's actually some beautiful rings on them logs. Kinda a shame to use them to hold up a pole barn.
>:D
-
I see staves!
-
Those are bows not poles
-
You guys are far too single-sighted. Just think of all the good mojo with having my bow barn built out of high quality bow wood.
-
If you ever decide to tear it down you will have seasoned staves with some history in them.
-
Where I live osage posts are the norm. When green of course the nails will go in,but still a stout staple is needed.Like you said earlier.10 year old ones though need to be predrilled if that's what a person wants.Fixing old fence here using ty wire is the quickest.Cool use of your poles if your blessed with osage around you like that.I might have left a few limbs on to hang things from though.
Drilling large holes through these corner and gate posts are always fun....lol.
-
Why not use them! I like it.
-
I'd say Scott you got a few months before the wood gets too hard to put nails in.Before that you'll have them up I'm sure. They'll look pretty darn nice incorporated into your shed.
-
Are you going to chase a ring on them before you put them up? :BB
-
Good work Scott...
"My wife's one request" .... :o
LOL... I think you miss spelled "command" ;) >:D
Del
-
The work bench looks a tad tall...at least for me it would be...or is that the penthouse? :OK
-
Good work Scott...

LOL... I think you miss spelled "command" ;) >:D
Del
Yep that was in the fine print! ;D
Pat I can build ya a step stool if ya want.
-
This morning I got the holes drilled and posts set with the help of the neighbors tractor. (God bless that man!) Then got busy tamping them in place and got a few boards hung before running out of time.

Several other projects are waiting for my attention, so I'm trying to hurry and get metal on. If I can get it in the dry before the summer heat I will feel like the victor. We'll see what this weekend holds.
-
That is looking great. When is the Illinois Classic?
-
Coming along very nicely Scott. When does class start?
Bjrogg
-
That has a great look already
-
That looks very cool Scooter. Even my wife wouldn't mind that on "our grounds" :)
-
"Naturalness" of it is sooooo inviting!
-
I hope so Michael. Shell agrees that it sorta looks like it grew there and fills the space nicely. Not sure when classes begin. Fall friends gathering?!? How many locals wanna come break it in for a weekend?
-
Holler when you're ready.
-
Man a osage live edge bench would look great in there Scott
-
I'm imagining a picture of you smiling with a new Osage bow and in the background is the corner of your shed propped up with a 2x4 ;D ;D
-
That's funny DC! ;D
Paul, I am already planning to build a picnic table with some live edge, but doubt I use Osage.
-
That's looking great, Scott. Really like those hedge poles. Especially the one that's cattywampus. Looks really good.
-
Thanks Stevo! I agree they give it a touch of class!
Had a chance to put half the metal on today. This side faces away from the house so I'm not worried about the metal being different colors.

Thanks Leroy

Wow
just keeps getting better and better

Way cool :OK ! Bob

Thanks guys! I reckon this is about the end of the build along.

If you look close you can see a lot of crooked lines and gaps, but it's solid and oughta stand a few seasons. I will add a few pieces of trim on the corners and probably build some work stations, but otherwise I'm calling it. The final tally was under $500 for a 24'x24' barn. I could always add on and I'm sure I will for years to come. The best part is the way it fits the land and me. I believe my grampa woulda been proud of it, and that makes me smile.

Thanks fer following!
-
Gonna put pea stone down inside, scooter? Might be a good way to keep mud at bay.
-
:OK
-
Very nice and quick work on the barn. Are you setting a couple of vise posts?
-
Nice, Scott. Don't worry about the gaps. You need the ventilation anyway. :OK
-
Yes Clint. Need to give it some study and pick good spots for the vises. Don't want them in the way, but don't want them in corners either. Also thinking about a work bench with tool wall behind it to centralize tools. Haven't fully fleshed it out yet...
Chris, I've given a little thought to rockin the floor, but I don't think I will till it shows a need.
Yessir Pat, summer tends to get kinda sticky around here. Good thing is there's shade with the trees in full leaf and with the openness I should manage.
-
Overhead storage for bow wood might be useful. Scott that looks killer cool. I really like it. I'm sure your grandpa does to.
Bjrogg
-
It's missing something - Orange dust :BB ! Bob
-
I like that, what a great place to hang out.
-
You gonna name it? I named mine The Mouse Trap. When it was just the shipping container I had a field mouse crawl in there. It tried to claw it's way out but...no luck!
-
I might carve a slab and hang it on the back wall.
-
Nice shed Scott. That did'nt take all that long to build.Still got plenty of the summer. Now it's just the organizing left.Looks like plenty of thought out room to use.Got a place for your tiilering tree on the inside side wall?If that's a route tillering you'll take?
I will usually keep building in my shed tlll a little below 32 degrees.
-
Very nice, Scott! Looks like something right out of Clint's Playbook. I'm envious now. Need to do something similar...
-
Like fine wine, this uns gonna get better with age! Thanks Matt.

Gonna start work on the bench and vises next.
-
Excellent work Scott. That's not the osage chair you made a year or two ago is it?
-
Yes it is. Turns out to be too heavy to pack and too short in the back for a full grown man, but the kids love it and it weathers well.
-
Looks like a great spot to hang!
-
It looks like you got a good start for a lot of fun, Buddy. Sweet job with the Barn.
-
Looks like your right at home there.A guy has just gotta have spot like that.
-
Very nice, got to love that. You will have some very peaceful times in that spot over the years. A man has got to have that to stay sein in this old world today. :)
Pappy
-
Shed is looking better all the time Scott. It's looking like your getting settled in and comfortable. I'm sure many fantastic projects and hopefully newbies will come from it.
Bjrogg
-
I love it. Great work Scott. You are gonna enjoy that.

Bench is done and a couple vises mounted. (One more to go.)

First shavings have been made and the summer heat is already making me think about layin some electrical cable to plug in a fan and some lights.
-
That is a really nice work area. Well done. Maybe one day I'll have the chance to make some shavings on that bench.
-
Nice work space Scott. :OK
-
Very nice Scott, you could always hang a lantern out there.
Bjrogg
-
That is one sweet work area Scott
-
Looking good Mr String! All ya gotta do now is add lotsa appropriate clutter.
-
I could do the lantern for awhile, but I will need electric out there eventually.
You're right, Mike, clutter is coming.
-
That turned out sweeeeet! I would love to have a place to work outside. My wife would love it too! I'm gonna build one of those someday. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
-
Turned out nice Scott. I really like the character the crooked post give it. Now where does the knapping pit go at in there?
-
I have a plan for the pit, Gut. Just need time to get everything done.
-
Yep look'n good.............

Just gets better and better!!
-
Yep, that's a very nice looking place you have there. :OK
-
Really shaping up Scott. You should get a lot of years out of that place.
-
It really takes a lot of thought/planning/and time to incorporate everything.Looks great!!!
-
Here's the cooking/cleanup addition. Just need to add cantilevered roof!

That sink idea might be a good addition, but I prefer to cook over the fire pit. (=)
-
Great looking bow shop Scott, i hope you craft many great bows and make some great memories to boot!
-
Thanks Bob, it has become my favorite spot to hang out even in the heat. Plenty of shade trees make it ideal except for a few short hours between 11- 1:00. And once I drop in electricity I think I can blow the heat out with a fan or 2.
My wife has been asking for a picnic table for years and this was the perfect place for it. Made the top with 2 slabs of rough cut cypress.

NICE! Looks like enough room on that tabletop for 8-course meal.
-
That looks awesome!
-
It's 30"x84" and fits this spot perfectly.
-
Nice pica-nic table Scott. I love the top and it fits well in your bow shop. :OK
-
Scott you just keep adding perfection to the "barn".......

Very cool

That Cypress is great looking stuff - lookin' good -C- ! Bob
-
Beautiful table
-
Just keeps getting better Scott

-
You could drill some holes in that fancy picnic table and mount a vise on each end >:D Add 2 more work areas to your set up.
-
Beautiful table Scott.Fine job on it too.
-
I told Shell right off that this table was gonna develop character quickly. That cypress is just soft and everything that touches it wil leave its mark. If you wanna clamp a stave to it, go ahead. 8)
-
If Scott's bow barn is like it is around my place there will be some rules from the wife! Have you ever seen anything that Scott built that was not special? Wish I had a way of posting the blades
he made for me! Joe
-
That place is looking good, love the table. :)

Thanks Joe & Pappy.
Shell wanted to break in the table yesterday with a picnic for Father's Day. So she cooked up some bacon and loaded trays and we headed to the barn. I had a fire goin and we had our first meal on the table. I'm pretty sure she was secretly wiping back tears she was so pleased with the table and shed. It's just been a fun project and a nice place we both enjoy.
Joe, some of your contributions have already gone up and others are in the process. They look great and I can't thank you and Eloise enough. Please send me pics when you get those knives done. I'd love to see them finished.
-
Love it
-
Happy Anniversary Sott !
-
Thanks Guy. After 18 years I reckon I can say she's a keeper.
Had a small "break in" gathering with some folks from the church bringing over pot luck. We had 50 people gathered in and around the barn and it didn't feel crowded at all.
