Since this is my first post a small introduction so you have some idea who I am:
I am a 43 year old dude from The Netherlands where I live with my wife and lovely two daughters. At work I sit behind a computer all day so when i am at home I have the need to compensate that by making stuff with my hands.
As far as archery goes: I never knew that there was more then the olympic stuff you see on tv until I was at a medieval festival about three years ago where I met a guy who was building and shooting wooden bows. That meeting triggered something in me and after a while i started searching the internet for more info.
Of course the first hits google gives you are from this forum!
Long story short: I started my first bow about two years ago using a buildalong from this site and every bow after that was built using knowledge from the awesome people here.
So I guess it is time to give back to the community by starting to actually post something:
I have a love for recurves but had never tried black locust. I got a really nice stave from a fellow bowyer and I usually make a straight bow when using a new wood. Somehow during the build I decided to make it into a recurve. I planned to make it a bit shorter but it shoots so good at 66" that I left it like that.
The specs of this bow:
Black locust "HLD" static recurve
66" long
62 lbs @ 28"
Fumed for 2 days using Simon's method
Recurves fumed for one, two and three days extra to get the fade effect
Ipé tip overlays
8 strand fastflight string
Cheers,
Leon

Great bow!! really nice :OK
...and apparently you fumed the dog too ;D
-
A beautiful bow! I rellay like it :)
A closeup of the recurves would be nice ;)
-
Beautiful bow! Nice work. Really like the bark color.
-
Beautiful bow you have there.
-
Welcome too PA. That is a sweet bow.
-
Beautiful work. Glad to have you aboard. You've got the bug for sure!
-
Thanks for the compliments! I will take some detail pics with my phone later, kinda forgot that since I was photographing seven bows after each other last saturday. And I sure have the bug;-) My wife thought it would fade after some time but i guess it is only getting worse.
-
Looks really nice. Your nocking point looks a bit low.
-
Very cool bow, personally I would let it have its natural yellow orange heartwood color.
People should start use more black locust for bows, its literally everywhere as its invasive species and looks good. Also beginners can train with ring chasing so they have much less hassle with mulberry and osage.
-
Now that's an introduction, beautiful bow in every aspect. :OK
-
You're new to the forum but not bowmaking. That's a professional piece of art right there.
-
That is a nice bow bud.Have fun with it,and welcome to the PA.
-
Beautiful bow!

Hi Leon, welcome to the community here!
You have made a fine bow for sure, I like it and the profiles are spot on.
You say it is a HLD, I would like to see a pic of the belly. And what do you say about the performance?
I'm always curious about the HLD, you might know!
Again, beautiful work!
-
Welcome aboard Leon! And that's a very fine bow you have made. Keep it up!
-
Welcome to PA Leon, that is a very nice profile and bend on that bow. You do very nice work. We all look forward to seeing more.

what he said!
-
You've been holding out on us, apparently. That's quite an introduction. A very beautiful bow!
-
Beautiful, some have it and some don't, you obviously do!
-
Thanks everyone for all the nice comments again!
@Patm: only shot the bow about 100 times and no nockpoint tied yet, just winged it for the picture.
@Stalker: I love the yellow of BL as well, just wanted to try this fuming thing;-) and I agree, BL is all over the place and a lovely bow wood
@Simon: thanks for the compliment! It is quite obvious looking at my bow that I admire your work a lot! About the performance: this definately feels like the fastest bow I ever made! Mind my bows are usually around 50 pounds so that is a big difference as well. I will try to shoot it through a chrony soon. (And will post the results)
About the HLD: I tried to follow the shape of the crown and invert it on the belly and leave the side walls thin so they can open up when drawing the bow. Below some close ups with my phone in the rain. Very curious what you find because I love to get the hang of your HLD method. (I tried it on a few hazel bows and they where way faster than flat limbed ones)

That is some nice work. Beautiful bow. I really like to color from the fuming and the HLD intrigues me. Have to try that some time. Welcome to the site.
-
That's a beauty.You did a great job. God bless
-
:o very cool!
-
Beautiful in every way! I like everything about it. That's my favorite design and profile. I've made a few Osage the same way (a bit shorter), with that same tiller and degree of recurve, and they are the fastest, hardest-hitting bows on the rack and a pleasure to shoot. Yours looks great!
Welcome aboard and thanx for the eye-candy!

Well that is a sweet one for sure. Love the looks as well as the tiller!
-
Definitely a thing of beauty. There are some that can make a good useable bow, and some that can make the same but also a work of art. That is a work of useful art in my opinion.
-
That is a Great looking bow! I love the curves and the fume job turned out really nice. Excellent job!
-
That is fantastic! The fumed locust is definitely an awesome look. Great job and welcome.

-
Thanks again everyone, that's a pretty warm welcome!
@Wizardgoat: same goes for me, love your instagram feed (especially your last cable backed yew, man that thing!), I finally start to get the hang of this social media thing and there's loads of bow eyecandy out there!
I wil definately share my work here from now on, started working on a leftover sliver of mulberry yesterday so will post some pics if that works out.
-
very nice, thanks for sharing, looking forward to the chronograph test,, best to you and your bow making, :)
-
Welcome, and great looking bow!

Very nice bow. Perfect tiller. Arvin
-
Welcome, Leon. The bow is beautiful! Very nicely done. Jawge
-
Great craftsmanship imo!

Thank you!

Congratulations Leon, I told you that one was going to beat mine in the BOM. That is a beautiful bow and a fantastic introduction to PA. Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future and voting for more of your bows in the BOM. Awesome job.

Thanks Bjrogg this really made my day! And motivates me to build more hld and recurves so expect some new ones in the following months! Have to finish a few lam bows this week and after my holiday it is on to the selfbows again!
-
That is a real beauty :)
If you get the hankering to try another like it, try deflexing the fades a few inches. I found it took my recurves to the next level. In general I get around another 5 - 8 fps or so by doing it compared to straight out of the handle. I guess it is keeping the wood 'fresher'.
Anyway again that is a stonker of a bow :)
-
Beautiful bow, congratulations on winning BOM.

Thanks! I will definately try that! I love the look of rd bows but have neve done it with a self bow. I still have a sister stave of this recurve so I will try it with that one for sure!
