Title: Hollow-Limbed Yew with Rattlesnake Skins 50#@28"
Post by: Weylin on August 13, 2017, 01:01:31 am
I've been working hard on this bow for a while now. I finally got to just sit down and make a bow that I wanted to make and I enjoyed every minute of it. I had a small diameter deflexed yew stave so I used the high crown to create the hollow limb and the deflex to make a reflex deflex. I brought it out to first brace before I started in on the hollow limb with my goose-neck. I had a really nice set of rattlesnake skins from Cipriano and figured this was the perfect bow to put them on. Bryce had given me a tanned beaver tail that he did, which was really flawless and amazing. I need to figure out that process because it was soo much nice to work with than a raw tail. I stained the tail dark (it was quite light from the tanning process.) Some of the lightness came through in the recessed areas to create a cool effect in the handle wrap in you look close. The tips are buffalo horn with a little carving in the edge of them to go with the rattlesnake skin. I did some painting along the edge of the skins with acrylic. This bow came together nicely. It shoots very quickly and quietly. I really enjoy the hollow limb design. I will definitely do more of them in the future.

Boahhh,
that is an extraordinary piece. I really like that you are working with the hld, can you feel  a flattening out when drawing the bow?

Your work looks flawless in every aspect, I would really like to shoot it.

That is a beautiful bow Weylin!I love the fd. That hld design with the high crown makes it look like it has super thick limbs. I really like the profiles. I gotta try one like that. Great job! Cheers- Brendan

Nothing against all the bow makers out there but DANG this is the nicest bow I've ever seen and I've already casted my vote for this bow for (BOM) I would say we will probably see it as 2017 bow of the year candidate. Awesome job!

Wow! Thank you all for the very kind words! As always, the supportiveness of this community is without peer.

Simon, I can't say I've noticed flattening but I haven't been looking for it. I will draw the bow tomorrow and look for it.

Dubois, I have only made a couple hollow limbs so it's hardly a scientific study but I really like the way they shoot. Simon would be able to speak to that better than me. I will definitely make more when I have the right staves.

Thanks again, guys.

Bob, I used acrylic model paints, a tiny brush, a steady hand and some patience.  ;D

Bob, I did start with a brush tip pen. That's what you see in the video. But it wouldn't set all the way on the shellac and kept wiping off so I had to paint over it anyway. I used to paint little models as a hobby so I developed a pretty steady hand from doing all the little detail work.

Just saw this bow in the Selfbow BOM post.  Very nice detail.  And of course you know how much I love anything yew.  Am very curious about how the hollow limb design feels and performs when you shoot it  Anything you might be able to compare it with?

Thank you, fellas.

Bob, I've only made a couple hollow limb bows and it's always hard to tell which factors are differentiating one bow from another but I do think the design makes for a more efficient bow from my limited sample group. The design is really about getting the most from a high crown stave. It redistributes the stress that gets concentrated by the high crown and spreads in out across the width again. It also reduces the limb mass by getting rid of the dead weight that occurs from that concentrated stress. Even if the gains from that are marginal (which I don't think they are) it at least looks really cool!
