I'm not sure if you could call this "work" but I'm well on my way to having a bunch of shitakes to dehydrate, vacuum seal, and send in my victim's Christmas package! I'm gonna try to forage for a bunch of other gourmet mushrooms as well.

Never had that kind of mushroom, sounds lIke and awesome thing to send. I still don't have any ideas yet myself. I'm hoping to harvest and tan a hide or two to send. Not sure what yet though.

mmm!  -C- Haven't seen them yet, but they're coming! This is a great time here for Black Trumpets, porcini(no bugs), and lion's mane as well.

Mo, a hide sounds awesome. Perhaps some jerky too?

Got a nice crop of Casacades Hops, and the tarragon is bonkers again, and pungent!  Still trying to use up the '15 crop -C-.  Had some on the elk burgers tonight!   Hops are vacuum sealed and frozen, still got some Nuggets to seal and freeze.  Might try that with the basil, too.

I leave all the mushrooms in the woods except for morels they come home with me. Really not a big fan of mushrooms.
Not sure what I am going to put together for my guy yet.

Eating mushrooms from the woods is risky business. I spent 5 years studying with a local mushroom group lead by a professor of mycology before I ever brought them home for the table. There are a few that are pretty much foolproof though.

I'm curious if anyone else had any interest in doing snake shed backings in bows? If so then I'll send a couple in the package. I've got a few collected and my big girl is about to shed again. She's an Enchi ball python that is now big enough that one skin should cover a bow well. Once applied you get a scale pattern and its faint, but you can see the pattern from the animal. There's no guarantees she will peel it off in one usable piece, but there's a chance. Sometimes they rip them or they get peed on. She's a bit over 4' long and soda can diameter now, and their sheds are generally 20-30% larger than they are. They are easy to apply if you take your time, and being from a small Python are a lot tougher than those found from a rat snake.
So any interest as a filler?

Nothing wrong with that. I have never used snake skin, but would like to try it out. I am into pretty much anything even remotely bow and arrow related. Along with most things primitive. I am thinking of putting together a package similar to what I gave last year. Basically a bow and arrow making package. Stave, shafts, handle/overlay material, maybe some fletching, and trade/ stone points. What do y'all think? Cheers- Brendan
P.s. oh and I Knapp too!

All is good with me, any raw materials, bow staves, arrow shafts, finished bows, finished arrows, flint, rock, skins, even shrooms! I'm game. If ya made it, gathered it, found it, or borrowed it! That's what this trade is all about.  )P(

They all sound like good gifts to guys. Kyle I'd love to try a Shed from your Boa. I use to have a small bull snake and two tarantulas. It was always so cool when they shed. The tarantulas especially. There would be the old worn faded shed and the bright brand new shinny real spider. Still amazed how they can do that.

Might want to start with something with a few less legs and work your way up to the tarantula.  ;D

OO, I searched around a bit for that bow paulsemp made but couldn't find it. I did see 1 or 2 with sheds though. One of them looked pretty cool.

go right ahead and make one. . I am sure your guy will like one hand made by you. I have my piece of walnut just need to get the pattern laid out . I use finishing nails on my string jig.

The one I made is crude to say the least. I've always wanted one of those nice all-wood numbers that you buy, I just could never justify buying something I could make myself. That's what would make it such a nice gift... Something you wouldn't buy for yourself, but secretly would love to have.

Don't know if I'll actually get around to making one, but an awesome idea for sure.

I'm another one of the last minute shoppers. I have a couple of plans. I just have to get them done. I'm hoping to get ahold of a deer hide to turn into rawhide for a canteen for the main part. I've also got a big bundle of rose shoots I can make some arrows to send. If nothing else I've got a bunch of staves and other Raw materials I can send along if the other plans fall through.

I am up for just about anything.  I am on the page enough that it is pretty easy to see the kinds of things I am in to.  My real problem right now is my victim has not been on the website much lately and it is really hard to figure out what would be to his liking.

A bow rack sounds like a great idea Hawk. I need one of those bad!

In addition to the smoked trout I've got vacuum sealed in the freezer and a few specialty supplies I won't mention I was thinking I'd send my victim a short ambush-style yew bow I made a while back. It's a spunky little shooter.

Won't hear any complaints from me on anything I've heard so far. I was given a couple of deer hides from some friends of mine. Once yheyre worked up and dried, I'll cut out some backing strips then use the 'scraps' to make some canteens and other stuff with. Probably some lacing to start with. Then I'll figure out some other stuff too. I'll probably put a small bottle or two or pepper powder in also. Who knows what else will find its way in there. Probably a bit of verdegris fletching glue.

I've got a couple deer hides fleshed out and soaking in ash water with a couple more ready to do the same. So getting close to some rawhide. Trapping and fur water season just opened so it's time to get some steel out later this morning when I get tired of waiting for some does to show up. So hopefully I'll have a pelt or two that'll go along also.

Thanks Pearl and everyone else to. It's a buck a friend of mine got that just didn't feel up to taking care of. I think he had to many barley pops the night before he gave it to me. Works for me it was skinned and gutted. He kept one hind quarter and I had to work around a 12ga. Slug hole but got some real nice grain feed version.

I'm thinking I may brain tan and stitch up a hide for a quiver instead of a canteen. I have a couple of coon large enough and a red fox that'll already dried. A good weekend and I can have one ready to go. So any preference on one or he other? Raccoon or red fox.
I've got a few deer hides soaking in a tub of wood ash and water, I'm hoping I haven't let them sit too long and I haven't had the time to scrape the hair and grain off so I can clean and stretch them yet. It might happen tonight though and get them soaking in vinegar water for a few hours to a day to neutralize the lye and hopefully kill the bacteria in the hides.

Well, I got my Christmas Trade item done. It is a side stalker style quiver. The quiver is hand stitched with an adjustable shoulder strap.  I also added a Russel Green River knife with an attached sheath. I got the blade from Crazy Crow a few years ago and added osage handle scales. The wood end plug of the quiver is tapered and slides in through the quiver body for cleaning purposes but also to replace the foam arrowhead holder when needed. I also added a copy of pictograph I got from the internet, glued to the wood and varnished to seal. I hope my recipient like my offering. I think I'll wait until December 15 before I mail it out. Here are a few pics...

That quiver is very nice looking. I would be very happy with that. Anyone against getting billets as opposed to a dull length stave in their package of goodies? Cheers- Brendan

Pat I hope that quiver is coming this way. Brenden, I don't think anyone would turn down billets.

Billets work fine for me. I'm thinking I may get started on breaking that fox hide this weekend now that it's fully dried. I'm sure itll only take one softening session to get it where I want it. Then I can smoke and stitch it up as I have time. Depending on how much time I have to soften another, I may throw in a softened mink hide. But if I'm inning short on time it might just be fleshed and dried, ready to tan. The canteen might be put in the back burner for next year as I haven't made the hides into rawhide yet.

Hello out there,
A little bit late this year. Hope to finish the horn today. It must be polished. Some nice tunes get out of it. Hope my mate in Vancouver likes it.
It should be at our postoffice on Monday. I wonder how long it takes to Canada.

I ended up with a stomach bug myself Monday night that took me out through tuesday. I'm finally feeling normal today.
But today I got started on tanning that fox hide. I used about a yard of artificial sinew patching up the tail where I ripped a chunk out fleshing and a few holes from fleshing and dispatch. The tail took most of it and was a pain with that thick fur. But it'll look good once it's broke. I'm working in breaking the hide between customers at work. I was hoping the cold would keep people inside, but nope, everyone is out today. Oh well. Worse things could be keeping me from breaking the hide. I'm using egg yokes in this one and it feels like itlll turn out nice and soft.

The fox hide just needs smoked now. I may do that tomorrow evening. It's crunchy in te legs. But the rest turned out decent. I did most of the breaki by stretching instead of on a board since it's an early hide and the hair was pulling through. But still good for a quiver.

An elm molly or a mulberry static?

Mullberry static.  No question.

They both sound great Upstate. I might go for the Elm Mollie  but sure wouldn't be upset with a Mulberry Static either.

I'm smoking the hide now. So it'll be good to start stitching soon.im hoping to be ready in about a week or so. This may not be the best smoking method. But I haven't had much issue with the loose smoke around then hide staining the fur a noticeable amount. Then I want to make some verdegris fletching glue to go with it, using WillS' recipe. I've come to like it. Very easy to make, heat and apply. And seems to hold the fletching on well, even when the binding starts to wear. I may come up wth a few more things to throw in. Any objections to throwing in a raw fur to tan on your own method? It'll be fleshed and dried. It'll be a muskrat that you can tannup and make into a bunch of silencers, or whatever you want. Maybe some random odds and ends will be in there too.

I got a half dozen shafts spined and sanded with self nocks tonight.  I have been straightening them for a while now.  Tomorrow cresting and finishing tomorrow, I hope.

I hope my victim will like a matched set of arrows.  I figure everyone needs arrows, and since I don't have an abundance of other options (I haven't trapped any foxes lately), it is one of the things I feel I can make that will be appreciated.

I have no problem at all with a set of arrows. I'd like it since I always put off making arrows.
I got the quiver all stitched up and just gotta put in a sling and itll be done. You might want to add a stiffening rod, but I'll let you decide if it's necessary or not. Plus I can fit it in the box better without it. Then I'll make up a jar of fletching glue.
While I was already stitching, I went ahead and patched up my coon quiver. The belly tore at a loop when I pulled on it and the skin didn't slide on the shoulder. A quick stitch job and good as new. I'm glad to go the 4-5 years without any tears or anything from it before the first path job.

Thanks guys.  I just decided to do the spliced fletches, and they turned out nicer than I expected.  If I hadn't just made a set for myself, I would be a lot more tempted to keep them.  Black and yellow always look good together.  Hope my victim likes them.
