Title: Tennessee Classic
Post by: Little John on March 19, 2008, 11:06:29 pm
Pappy, just read the article in P.A. by Dusty about the classic. Great story and made me really want to try and make it out this year. What are the dates and where would be the best place to fly into?   Kenneth

Not Pappy but I can answer your question.  It's May 2-4 and the best place to fly into is Nashville.  The Nashville airport (BNA) is about 35-40 min from Pappy's place which is just a few miles off Exit 19 of I-24.

Kenneth, look down in the Shoots and Events forum-there's a couple ongoing threads about this year's TN classic pinned to the top.

Hope you can make it,let us know your plans and we can probably hook you up with a ride from the air port.Once you get there you may not want to go back ,but if you do we can probably get you back also.Knothead lives close to the airport. He is picking up Tiller and going to get him back.Hope
it works out. :) Where are you coming from ? I had an idea[I know that is dangerous] I thought
it would be cool to get a map of the US and beyond and put it up on a wall somewhere and have some stick pins so we can get a feel where all the folks come from. There was one in the new
PA from Mojam.I know we have some coming already from  west form Warshington, south to
Florida and north to Mi.and Pennsylvania maybe Canada hint hint [Marc] east from the Carolinas and Va.and a lot of points in between. What do yall think ?

I read the story last night,(just so happens to be my first official subscription issue  ;D), i didint think i could be more excited about the classic, i was wrong....my oh my, talk about spreading the love.  Pappy, Greg and all of you associated with the classic should be proud of the selfless thing you are doing. the experiences people have there will last for a lifetime. not to mention passing the sport on to the younger generation. you are setting an example for the entire primitive archery community. I cant wait to get there, sit down in the dirt and soak it all in, this is gonna be fun.

I am working today (Good Friday) for over time ( travel money)and take off a friday for the classic instead. Hope to travel friday morn and Sunday late. Wanted to come last year with Justin, but am really excited about the prospect this year. The map is an excellent idea. Looks like this is the premier  primitive archery event ever.   Kenneth

i wish i could be there.  the only thing i can do right now is to wear my TN classic hat where ever i go and no matter what i do. (fixing breakfast, making cigarettes, relaxing and especially when i shoot "two deer" )

pictures were taken last week, at a friend's birthday party (lasted 3 days  ;D)

there are no words that could make y'all better than you are and words cannot adequately describe how welcome i felt during my visit and how overwhelming your hospitality and generosity were, especially towards a stranger with awkward manners (right Ms. Joanie?)

You're looking might sporty in your Twin Oaks cap there Marius. Is that a PBR in your hand?  ;D
Kenneth, where would you be flying out of, Farmington, Durango?  Hope you can make it. If you need a tent or any camping supplies I can bring whatever or maybe there will be room in Dick's pop-up. Thats where Marius and I slept last year,  Pat
Title: Re: Tennessee Classic

...and Marius, even though I read your proof of the article I haven't read your article in PA...because it ain't got here yet! >:(  I'll critique it for you when I read it. >:D  ;)    Pat

pat, you're such a nice guy  ;D  by the way, i haven't seen the article either.  haven't gotten my password to the e-mag yet.  so i'll just wait for your critique.

talking about dick's pop-up, did you hear that distant banjo music too?  >:D

PS:  the beer is a Schwabenbräu Meister Pils, one of my favorites, nowadays.  the white cooler you see at my side holds two crates (40 half liter bottles) and 4 bags of ice.  it's been to every archery tournament i've been to.  since germans are not that used to coolers and ice, it makes me a very popular guy when i arrive with a cooler full of ice cold beer  ;D

Pat, looks like a go !!! Can get a flight out of Durango Thursday evening an be in Nashville at about 10:00 and return Sunday afternoon. The cost of the air fare is not even outragous. Will probably bring a tent and sleeping bag, might need to throw in with some one for cooking and eating.Would not be able to live with myself if I did"t make this one. Can't wait to meet the family  in person.  Kenneth
Title: Re: Tennessee Classic
Post by: Pat B on March 22, 2008, 12:07:51 pm
Kenneth, Don't bring the tent I used on our trip! ;D    I have an 8 man and a 4 man tent that I can bring with no trouble. You might need the checked luggage space for archery related items. Iwill also have extra bows etc if you need anything like that to use.
I am very pleased to hear you will be joining us. Might even be some extra Black Velvet(or similar elixir) there if you desire. ;)  I'm sure you won't go hungry. You can share our vittles if necessary.  Marius had a stash of canned tuna and canned chicken so he wouldn't go hungry but never opened a can. He had to haul it all back to Germany with all the other loot he acquired ;).     Pat

I've got an 8 person Cabela's dome tent that should comfortably sleep 4-5 with some gear I would guess. Had it for a while, but barely used. Yall are welcome to it if it would come in handy and save some room on your packing. ;)

Yep Greg, mighty quiet lately. I reckon every one must be counting the days and making arrows. Me, I am just trying to catch up on honey do's so I will get to come. Oh do you have a place for flight shooting, I know those eastern states are so over grown makes a man feel claustrophobic. Any way about the first thing I like to do with a new bow is to judge it's performance by seeing how far it will shoot.  Kenneth

Kenneth, I got another Osceola and 2 more hogs. The turkey was big for an Osceola, 21#, nice hooks and a 10 1/4" beard. I had to crawl up on him while he was strutting with hens. Got him with the 'Nellie at 23 yards. Got the pigs with the pistol.

Kenneth, we've got a long field that our practice butts are in...might could take a few shots there but would have to time it when nothing else was going on. We have what we call "Novelties", like a running deer that are also set up in that field.

Congrats on your successful hunt Eddie!

Kenneth, just mount an altimeter to the end of the arrow instead of a field point and shoot straight up! ;D
Title: Re: Tennessee Classic
Post by: Little John on April 07, 2008, 10:14:31 pm
There you goGreg, when I was a kid I used to shoot straight up and see how close I could make the arrow land to me with out running. Still do sometimes, must be the kid still in me. Some times just for grins I will flight shoot one from the side of a mountain just to see how far it will go, or as a salute to old friends gone.  Kenneth

I keep telling my wife that there is an unfair difference between our hobbie's expense...I make bows from logs, she buys clothes. Probably about a 10 to 1 difference in her favor I'd guess. ;)  But I accept it gladly as payoff for her letting me make bows and hunt pretty much all I want! :)

Thanks, but no thanks Pappy! I tried that stuff once and could not feel my lip for a week after.

Don't smoke myself. But every once in a while for special events a cigar is nice, prefer a pipe but ya need the acoutrements for that!  ;D  Reason I did not take up pipe smoking is I liked it too much!!! Cancer runs in the family too. So thats another incentive not to start untill in my 70's or 80's! ;D

Hmmm! Dont think I can fit a bow and arrows in the luggage on the way down but will try to make them there and ship them back. Think I will be able to do this if I come in on Sunday and start in right away?

When it comes to cigars, I don't think there is a downwind.   ;D   Pat

We will have our own little mushroom cloud fanning out from the fire!  ;D

You should be able to get one shooting,I will have you one floor tillered so it won't
take to long, might even get to seal it up some before the shoot.I don't smoke either
but I do like my dip.bad habit but I like it anyway. ;)

Dont worry about floor tillering it for me Pappy. I like a challenge! I think I should have plenty of time if I start in on Sunday evening and work all the way through.  Is this too ambitious?

Any ideas on what type of design I should aim for? Will limit myself to a 27-28" draw and at most 55-60# draw.

Do you want one that has to be debarked and a ring chased,or one already down to a ring ?
I would say a pyramid 66-68 1 1/2 and tapper to the tips. That should do it.Fairly simple and easy to tiller.  :)

Never chased a ring before! Is it hard to do? If not I'll go for it. But if it takes to much time I'm up for the pre-chased ring. Either way I will be one happy camper!  ;D

The pyramid design sounds like the way to go. Can we flip the tips on this design?

You have plenty of time. Do it all, rough it out, chase the ring, start to finish. You have so much experienced help at your fingertips it would be a shame not to take advantage of the opportunity.  Justin

Ron, thats really generous of you.  You sure you want to give up a stave?  I dont want to deprive you of a prime peice of ossage. Though, I'm up for taking a raw stave from begining to end product. Need to do this more often but have not had the time. I still have one of Manny's guava staves sitting in my shack that I never can get to.

Thanks!  :)

You will not have any problem finishing your bow.
I started with one of my ( bark on) Osage staves last year and had it shooting in two days.

Yes but we can tell our women from our men.

A lot of people say, "What's that?" It's Pat!
A lot of people ask, "Who's he? Or she?"
A ma'am or a sir, accept him or her
or whatever it might be.
It's time for androgyny.
Here comes Pat!
