Title: making a bow for a friend
Post by: bradsmith2010 on November 18, 2017, 01:10:35 pm
well I am trying to pick the right stave,, I think they would all work,, but you know how it is,, each one has its own issues,,
all beautiful,, but challenging,, I got the evil band saw tuned up,, and ready to rough one out,, (SH)

My pick would be the one on the far left , the one on the far right you would have to make some crooket arrows for 🙄

If it were me, it would depend on how good of a friend it was. For a best bud I'd go with the far left, but if it were a casual acquaintance I go 2nd from the right.  ;)

Keep us posted  (-P

I like the far left #1, then count in to #4 & #5.  But I don' really have experience picking staves!

Brad, I'd say the second from the left. Looks like it already has the back profile done or almost so.

I am leaning toward this one,
pretty knot free
pretty straight,, the growth rings are big and some dont like that, but this is gonna be a low stress design,,long and about 40ish draw,,
sometimes there are unseen issues with even the best looking staves,, so after I take off some wood will see how she looks,, and I hope to do that now,,
you can see there is some sapwood on the back, I will go down below that and work to a nice ring,, I was gonna say that its gonna be easy with the thick rings but then thought better of saying that,, cause you never know,,, :)

this bow gonna just be a simple long bow,, 66 ish long drawing to 40ish,,at 28,, nothing fancy, ,but I am going to do my best to get some nice cast and little set,,

you were posting when I did,, I think thats the one I am gonna start and see,, its hard to tell from the photos I know,, sorry Pat I got the backwards, the one you are talking about is pretty long, and I am not sure I want to cut that one down,, it will probably sit until I figure that out,,

you are right,, I will just watch it real close,, as far as the set goes,, and see what happens,, since my friend does not know I am making a bow, I can always start over,, but I have a feeling it gonna be ok,,  (W

4  or 5....

this one is from 5,, the bow is slowly revealing itself,, the dark line seems ok,, but that part is concave, making it a bit difficult to get to the one ring,, it looked so straight,, :)

I love the surprises Osage has for us as it subtly let's us know how to proceed. There's no other wood like it. I'm still totally tuned in! Thanks for keeping us interested.  ;)

ok you can see its pretty nice,, has some reflex and deflex,, grain is pretty nice,, one pin knot,, but back is pretty good  and a thick ring,, I think I can do bout anything,, gonna keep it simple,, cant decide if I want a deep handle ,, I like bendy handles ,, but the guy I am giving it too shoots mostly fiberglass so I may do a deep handle so its easier for him to shoot,,

Nice so far and yes they always looks so straight and prefect until you get into them. Been looking for 30 years for the prefect stave and haven't found it yet. :) Maybe someday. ;) :)

I meant to say that you are an awesome bowyer and you do NOT need my help but my lack of typing skills got in the way of my true feelings. :)

Jawge I know I need your help,,:
yep the high desert is good for bow making,, you just have to watch and not get the wood too dry,, thats usually not a problem else where,,
I havent had time to proceed but hope to make some progress this week,,
